I have learned so much since joining CLIA in February, most notably about the importance of our Executive Partners and the value they bring to our association. I truly believe it is essential to keep our Executive Partners engaged in the association’s activities at national, regional and international levels. The cruise industry has great potential for growth in Europe. Last year, more than six million Europeans took a cruise, an all-time industry high. Since 2008, the number of Europeans choosing a cruise holiday has increased by 44% and CLIA, together with its partners, continue to work tirelessly to improve upon this growth rate. Support from all stakeholders and policymakers is vital to the long-term growth both regionally and globally. As CLIA continues to strengthen its presence around the world, we know we can accomplish great things together with our Executive Partners. Thank you for your continued support of CLIA and the cruise industry. Raphael von Heereman Secretary General, CLIA Europe 1 NEWS YOU CAN USE CANADA PLACE INSTALLS AUTOMATED PASSPORT CONTROL KIOSKS Cruise travelers embarking on Alaskan cruises out of Vancouver have a new automated option designed to speed up the clearance process at U.S. Customs and Border Protection checkpoints. Ten new kiosks are now in place in the Canada Place Cruise Terminal, serving as a more efficient option for travelers moving through customs. Each passport is cross-checked by security databases and the documentation is finalized by a U.S. Customs officer. Self-serve passport kiosks can process guests up to four times faster than traditional border clearance, which results in shorter queues and more satisfied guests. A recent study of BORDERXPRESSTM kiosks showed that the process reduced the average customs delay by 89 percent, shaving 33 minutes off the average wait time. “With this launch, Port Metro Vancouver’s cruise terminal has become the first worldwide to utilize automated passport control technology for U.S. bound passengers,” said Peter Xotta, Vice President of Planning and Operations with Port Metro Vancouver. “These kiosks will further enhance the cruise passenger experience at Canada Place.” Guests with a U.S. passport, a Canadian passport or permanent residents of the United States can use the kiosks. There is no preregistration or service fee required. The self-serve kiosks allow guests to scan passports and confirm identity with a digital photograph. From that point, the traveler makes customs declarations for their party (up to four travelers living at the same address). Automated passport kiosks have cleared more than 10 million passports since being introduced in 2009 and were named one of the best new travel amenities of 2013 by USA Today. Please describe your position and role in the cruise industry. As General Counsel, I am responsible for all legal aspects of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. which encompasses Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. In addition to legal matters, I have a broad scope of duties which include, Risk Management, Corporate Governance and Compliance, Claims Management and Government Affairs. As a member of the CLIA Government Relations Committee, I have had the honor of working with representatives from many of the major lines to help influence policy and shape the future of our industry. I may be dating myself but I began my career as a Prosecutor under Janet Reno in Miami-Dade County. I began working in the cruise industry in 1997 at a law firm that represented most of the major cruise lines in all business. I then joined Norwegian in 2004 as an Assistant General Counsel; I have continued in this department, adding duties and responsibilities over the years. 5 What do you believe is the key to growth in the cruise industry? What do you believe is the most significant advancement in the cruise industry – specifically in your area of expertise? 2 Though it sounds incredibly basic, the key to growth for all cruise operators remains getting the industry’s value message out loud and clear. The simple fact remains that no other vacation offers the experience nor affordable prices we do. No one has to take a vacation, but when they are looking to do so, they should be shopping our industry. From a regulatory perspective, fuel emissions technology and all of the technological advancements that have helped the industry remain trusting stewards of the environment. These have been the most significant advancements from both an environmental and economic perspective. 6 Name a “highlight” in your career. While I am proud of all of the initiatives that I have had the opportunity to lead or that have played a role in during my tenure at Norwegian, without a doubt the highlight of my career was being part of the team that took the company public in January 2013. It was the culmination of years of hard work and discipline and watching it all come together on the first day of trading was an unforgettable moment. 3 Who do you believe has made an impact on the cruise industry? The answer lies not with one person, but the entire Travel Agent community. Without the support of our travel partners, there would be no cruise industry. They have helped us grow, are the industry’s greatest cheerleaders and are the first to help us out when we need it. 3 CLIA EVENT REPORTS CONGRESSIONAL CRUISE CAUCUS and Patrick Murphy (D-FL) participated in the day's events.
