Thematic Mapping Activity World War I Due

Thematic Mapping Activity World War I
Thematic maps are a great way of looking at key events that occurred within a
specific historical period. Your task is to create a thematic map outlining the key
events that were representative of WWI.
This activity will be done in pairs. I have included some of the key events that you
must include on your map in this assignment. However, if there are any events you as
a pair feel are important elements, please include them.
I have provided you with a map of Europe before and after WWI. You do not want a
map of present day Europe. You will be recreating the map of Europe before and
after the war. You should have 3 maps total, a map of Europe in 1914, this will
be your main map, a map of Europe after WWI, and a map of Canada.
Your focus of this assignment is CANADA’s war effort in EUROPE. But there were
many key events that also occurred in North America. Please make sure to include
these in your map. You will have to use symbols and colors to identify the key issues
of WWI and show them on your map. For example, to show the Triple Entente, you
might use shaded lines within each country that was a part of this alliance. Another
example would be the issue of Conscription in Canada. This divided English-French
relations, and an election was called over this issue so you might use a voting ballot to
represent this and play it in Quebec.
Key Events (these should be displayed on your maps)
 Imperialism
 Militarism
 Nationalism
 Alliances
 Where Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated
 Women’s role in WWI
 Minority’s role in WWI
 A map of Canada with the key events occurring there such as:
o Halifax disaster
o Conscription crisis
o Nationalism
o Income tax
o Victory bonds
o Propaganda
 Schlieffen Plan
 Trench Warfare
 Western Front (1000km’s of trenches running from the North Sea coastline to
Switzerland, this is were most Canadians fought!)
 Eastern Front (Baltic Sea in Eastern Germany down to the Eastern border of
Austria-Hungary)
 New Technology
 Major battles (Ypres, Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele
 Armistice
 Treaty of Versailles
 Wilsons Fourteen Points
 League of Nations
Lastly make sure you include the following:
 Place a North Arrow on your map
 Make sure you include a legend on your map showing what each symbol
represents (this might be quite large, so you may have to do it on a separate
sheet of paper)
 All major countries involved in the war
o Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Belgium, Turkey,
Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece.
 Major bodies of Water
 Title on your Map
 One marking rubric, with your groups names on it attached to the back of
your map
