Jesus is a friend who cares, illumines and unites Rev. Anthony Korir, SMA Two of the disciples were on the way to their village Emmaus. On their way, Jesus appeared to them incognito, explained the scriptures to them, illumined their hearts and made them go back to the fold of the disciples in Jerusalem. Jesus Joined as a guest at their meal, but as usual He became the host at their meal. From this delightful incident may we meditate on three things concerning Jesus. He cares, He illumines and He unites. Jesus Cares Often, we read in the Gospel that no sooner Jesus Sees anyone in pain, His hands are stretched out to help. When Jesus saw the two heart-broken disciples on their way to Emmaus, he cared enough to join them on their way to alleviate their pain and take their sadness away. Jesus loves and cares for us so much that he would not allow an unnecessary tear in our eyes. He truly binds our wounds and heals our broken hearts. Jesus illumines The two travelers on their way to Emmaus had their hopes dashed when Jesus of Nazareth was nailed to the cross. They were unable to comprehend the purpose of God in the life of Jesus especially in the context of the Crucifixion. They describe Jesus as a prophet “mighty in deed and in word before God and all his people.” They even hoped that Jesus would be the one who would redeem Israel. But what they failed to take with right seriousness are prophecies of Jesus concerning His suffering, death and resurrection. They failed to see beyond Crucifixion to the possibility of the continuation of Jesus as Israel’s redeemer. He made them to understand that it was necessary for the messiah to suffer and then enter his glory. Then Jesus explained about Himself beginning from Moses and all the prophets. The second illumination comes to them when they recognized Him at the breaking of bread Jesus is the light of the world. He removes darkness in our minds and hearts. May we pray to Jesus along with John Milton: what is in me dark illumine; what is low raise and support. Jesus Unites In his priestly prayer in the gospel of John Jesus prayed, “Holy father, protect them in your name that you have given me so that they may be one as we are one (John 17:11). Jesus always yearned and prayed for the unity of the disciples. The resurrection of Christ narrated by Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary mother of James and the women was an idle talk and the disciples did not believe in them. The story of the resurrection created a rift among the disciples and the two disciples from Jerusalem marks the beginning of this drift from the community of the disciples. We read in the Gospel that the disciples after recognizing Jesus hurried back to Jerusalem. Jesus by appearing to the two drifting disciples brought them back to the fold of the disciples. They who were going away from Jerusalem and thus from the unity of the disciples were brought back to the same fold by Jesus. Jesus united the drifting disciples. As we celebrate this eucharist, may Jesus our friend who cares for us, illumine and unites us as one family of God A husband and wife had been married for 60 years and had no secrets except for one: The woman kept in her closet a shoe box that she forbade her husband from ever opening. But when she was on her deathbed—and with her blessing— he opened the box and found a crocheted doll and $95,000 in cash. “My mother told me that the secret to a happy marriage was to never argue,” she explained. “Instead, I should keep quiet and crochet a doll.” Her husband was touched. Only one doll was in the box—that meant she’d been angry with him only once in 60 years. “But what about all this money?” he asked. “Oh,” she said, “that’s the money I made from selling the dolls.” A couple are sitting in their living room, sipping wine. Out of the blue, the wife says, “I love you.” “Is that you or the wine talking?” asks the husband. “It’s me,” says the wife. “Talking to the wine.” My fiancé and I went to a counselor to work on our communication issues. Using herself as an example, the counselor crossed her legs and her arms and exhaled loudly. I was about to say she was showing signs of frustration, but my fiancé beat me to it, yelling, “I’ve got it! You’re constipated!” REMEMBER: May 7th is Mothers' Day. Special thanks to all our Mothers.
