SPORTS SCIENCE ST MARY’S UNIVERSITY TWICKENHAM LONDON 2016/2017 SEMESTER 2/SPRING MODULES FOR STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS IMPORTANT NOTES: 1. Possible module combinations making up a full course load are: 3 x 20 credit modules = 60 credits in total 4 x 20 credit modules = 80 credits in total Note that a UK student normally takes 3 x 20 credit modules in a semester) We recommend that you check what the practice at your home institution is of converting UK credits into US credits. 2. A timetable in order to ensure that clashes are avoided will be available in due course. 3. The list provided here may be subject to change or availability. The information and detailed course descriptions included in this document were extracted from the most recently updated validation documents. However, minor changes may be operated by the module convenors, which do not justify a full revalidation. Physiology of Exercise Code: SPS4011 Level: 4 This module introduces students to fundamental principles underlying exercise physiology, focusing on the structure and function of physiological systems. Students should be able to identify key physiological responses to exercise within theoretical frameworks and concepts. Students should also be able to assess and record physiological responses to exercise using newly learnt laboratory techniques to further their understanding and present their findings within pre-defined criteria associated with the study of exercise physiology Basic Biomechanics Code: SPS4041 Level: 4 This module aims to introduce students to the fundamental aspects of biomechanics and anatomy that they will require throughout their degree. It will involve a series of lectures to identify and explain the key principles, and associated smaller group laboratory or seminar classes to allow the students to further explore and understand these topics. Laboratory classes will provide students with hands-on experience of biomechanical data collection. Ergogenic Aids in Sport Code: SPS5012 Level: 5 This module will enable students to investigate the efficacy, mechanisms of action and the physiological and medical consequences of a variety of ergogenic aids used in sport. Social Psychology of Sport Code: SPS5021 Level: 5 The module aims to build on and further develop key theoretical concepts in sport psychology that were introduced at level one. In addition, a number of new concepts and theoretical approaches are discussed from social psychological processes within sport. Through the presentation of theory and contemporary research in lecture sessions, the module aims to develop students’ critical understanding of this area of study. Theories in Sport Sociology Code: SPS5032 Level: 5 To develop student understanding of different sociological theories and perspectives and apply this knowledge to sporting issues and debates. In addition, the module facilitates students in developing their communication and presentation skills. Environmental Physiology Code: SPS6012 Level: 6 This module aims to develop student understanding of the effects of various environmental factors on sport performance. The physiological responses to environmental stressors will be reviewed along with methods of adaptation. Sports, Media and Representation Code: SPS6032 Level: 6 To develop students’ understanding and critical thinking in relation to the media, sport, culture and representation. In particular the module aims to familiarise students with methods of deconstructing and analysing representations of sport within the media from critical socio-cultural perspectives. Applied Biomechanics Code: SPS6042 Level: 6
