Mr Kingsford’s Jokes
At a young age I remember my Dad taking me out fishing. We caught
nothing. Things went so bad and I irritated him so much that he made
me swim all the way back.
When I was a young teen he took me out for a game of golf. As we
swam back I thought to myself how golf was a lot like fishing.
I remember my first date. My Dad came as a chaperone. I had to
practice my life saving skills on my way home because my date
couldn’t swim.
It wasn’t long before I was off to University… on swimming
scholarship. I studied Physics. This was inspired by my Dad who
would often throw Frisbees with me after swimming to the park. I
wondered why the Frisbee would appear larger the closer it got. And
then it hit me!
After swimming home for my first break from studies Dad asked me how
my studies were going. I told him ‘Hey Dad study is a lot like
fishing’.
‘You spend a lot of time sitting around waiting for something to
happen and occasionally you catch something. Some are good at it and
some are not. Those that are not make great swimmers’.

Organisation. Time-Management. Commitment. Motivation. All of
these are qualities that teachers tell us to apply in our daily
lives - yet I possess none of them. I'm sure that some people
possess less drive and less motivation than me, so how is it
that we do survive?
I have found that coping with schoolwork that's increasing at
an exponential rate is a cyclic process. You get one assignment
and you think "Meh, Easy! I have 2 weeks to do this assignment
and I could do it the night before" but 2 days before the due
date you get 2 more assignments and the work keeps piling up.
Rather than saying "please shoot me" to the fellow in the desk
next to you, you work your butt off. You get stressed out and
are on edge. You snap at your friends, you forget the simplest
things and the things that would normally be on your list of
priorities, like showering, aren't so high on the to-do list
anymore. I know it sounds gross but it's actually true. People
who are highly stressed, normally aren't the most hygienic
fellows.
After stressing out so much and being still nowhere near
finishing, you quit and accept the detention you were destined
to receive. So how can we escape this deadly cycle? Sadly (and
I really do hate to say it) trying to actually be organised and
motivated does help. I don't mean for you to plan your life
around study, because it is important for you to have your
‘you-time’ (even though teachers hardly ever mention 'balanced'
and 'well-rested' in their list of "Best Student Qualities”)
but it is very important for you to get your assignments in on
time.
