CHAPTER 3: VINEYARD FACILITY MAP SUMMARY Contents Introduction Developing a Farm Map (ANR Publication 8062) Table of Land Measurements Map Scale and Equivalents Creating a Farm Map with GPS and Google Earth Creating a Soil Map in USDA’s Web Soil Survey INTRODUCTION Maps can provide information about locations of streams, roads, buildings, and natural features located on the property as well as identifying locations of existing or planned conservation practice and photo points. The subsequent resources may assist you in the development of your Vineyard Facility Map. DEVELOPING A FARM MAP (ANR PUBLICATION 8062) Attached. MAP SCALE AND EQUIVALENTS Attached. CREATING A FARM MAP WITH GPS AND GOOGLE EARTH Things You’ll Need: 1. Portable GPS device 2. Access to Google Earth (free download) Instructions Get Your GPS Data 1. Walk around your farm and find all the important objects or locations you want on your map. Look for outbuildings, fences, tractor roads, corners of fields, rocky areas, wooded areas, lines of abrupt slope change, creeks and ponds, among other things. 2. Make a list of all the aspects of your farm that you want to locate on your map. 3. Expand your list by identifying the defining locations of these aspects of your farm. For most things, like a field or barn, the four corners define the location. A straight road or fence line is defined by its endpoints and one spot in the middle. A rocky area can be defined by one point in the middle and an approximation of its diameter. 4. Walk to all the locations on your expanded list and write down the GPS coordinates next to each item. Create Your Map 5. Open Google Earth and navigate to the aerial image of your farm by typing your address into the “Fly to” search. 6. Click the “Add Placemark” icon and enter the name and coordinates of the first location on your list. Repeat this process for the remaining locations. 7. Use the “Add Polygon” icon to fill in the shapes between the placemarks. For example, if you have the four corners of your barn entered, you can draw a rectangle that connects those four dots in order to represent your barn. 8. Click the “Show Ruler” icon to measure distances between different items on your map. CREATING A SOIL MAP FOR YOUR VINEYARD WITH USDA’S WEB SOIL SURVEY Things You’ll Need: 1. Internet Access and a Printer Instructions Access the USDA Web Soil Survey Website 1. Open your web browser and enter in the following URL: http://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm 2. 3. You can follow the instructions under the “Four Basic Steps” section on this webpage. Click the Green button that says “Start WSS”. This will open a new web soil survey webpage for you. Make sure you are on the “Area of Interest” tab and enter in your vineyard address in the appropriate address box. This will zoom into your vineyard property. 4. Now you can draw box or a polygon around your vineyard to define the area of interest boundary. Click the red rectangle or the red polygon tool and click to trace a line around your vineyard property. Double click to finish the outline. 5. Now that you have finished the area of interest for your property, you can click on the “Soil Map” tab to see the soils on your property. You can click on each soil unit to get more information about that particular soil type. 6. You can also print out this map with the soils descriptions by clicking on the “Printable Version” button in the upper right hand corner. This will bring up a print window where you can title the soil map appropriately (e.g. XYZ Vineyard Soil Map) 7. Lastly, you can click on the “Soils Data Explorer” to view other soil properties such as Erosion Hazard Rating, or whether soils are suitable for structures or water storage, among many other soil properties.
