Arthur Garesche (1860-1952) was a Victoria dentist married to Millicent Mary Trimen.

The Payne brothers began sheep farming in the Gulf Islands in 1886. A sister married into the
Bradley-Dyne family, which began farming in Saanich some years after. Later on the Payne
brothers also moved to Saanich.

Robert Douglas MacLachlan fonds. – 1909-1964 (predominantly 1909-1930). – ca. 100

Robert MacLachlan (1883-1969) was a stock and real estate broker, solicited for Henderson
Directories, worked for the Dominion Government Savings Bank as well as the Assistant
Receiver General's Office, and later for the Provincial Government. He also served in the
Army during World War I.

Nanaimo scenes, as well as a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings of MacLachlan's
advertisement for his brokerage business and other material.

George Harvey (1859-1937) was a resident of Victoria who worked at Turner, Beeton and
Company for over fifty years.

Chambers, Todd family fonds. – 1890-1935. – ca. 550 photographs. and 0.01 m of textual
records (0.98 m).
Arthur Hyde Chambers (1852-1935) was a Victoria photographer. He first married Annie
Middleton in 1869, with whom he had one son. He later married Jessie Clark, in 1881, with
whom he had three daughters and one son. Chambers ran a photographic studio in Victoria
from the 1890s to 1900.
Frederick Dundas Todd (1858-1926) came to Victoria in 1908, where he worked as Provincial
Apiarist until 1921. He married Rebecca Keay, with whom he had three sons and two
daughters. All of his sons became civil engineers.
The Chambers and Todd families are related by marriage; R.A.D. Todd, a son of Frederick
Dundas Todd, married Phoebe Rosalie Chambers, daughter of Arthur Hyde Chambers.

Ethel Bruce fonds. – 1869-1966 (predominantly 1914-1966). – 1.04 m of textual records and

Ethel Bruce (d. 1968) enjoyed a long career as a journalist, first in England and, after 1910, in
Canada. From 1911 to her retirement in 1941, Bruce worked for the Victoria Daily Times and
Daily Colonist.

Fonds consists primarily of material related to Ethel Bruce's career as a journalist including
newspaper clippings, concert and theatre programmes, invitations, pamphlets, maps,
photographs, correspondence and picture postcards.
Cameron family fonds. – [187-?]-1922. – ca. 50 photographs (0.06 m).
Duncan Cameron (d. 1884) and Jessie Anderson (1822-1906), both born in Scotland, met and
married in the California goldfields, where their first three children were born. The Camerons
brought their family north in 1860 and settled in Victoria. Their daughter, Agnes Deans was
born in 1863. Her expedition to the Arctic in 1908 resulted in the popular book, "The New
North".

Cameron in his early automobiles, and Agnes Deans Cameron's 1908 expedition to the
Canadian north.

Muriel Evans worked as a fingerprint expert with the Victoria Police Department.
Fonds consists mostly of certificates, books, pamphlets, photographs, and a report related to
Muriel Evans's work as a fingerprint expert, and her first aid and civil defence work during
World War II.

Thomas Rodney Cusack fonds. – [ca. 1893-1920]. – 35 photographs (0.02 m).
Thomas Cusack (1869-1925) was a Victoria printer. He invested in commercial real estate in
Victoria and erected stores in the area of the Hudson's Bay Company store.

Fonds consists of photographs showing Thomas Cusack and others in early automobiling
scenes as well as Victoria people, businesses, and ceremonies.
Jones family fonds. – [188-]-1966. – ca. 500 photographs (0.13 m).
Henry Jones came to Victoria in 1898, later opening his own brokerage, real estate, mining
and timber business. In the 1920s to 1940s worked a gold mining claim in the Lillooet district.
He died in 1954.

Pauline family fonds. – 1896-1913. – 4 photographs.
Frederick Pauline, born in England in 1831, came to B.C. in 1888 and went into business as an
advertising, financial and real estate agent. He died in 1918.

excursions over the Malahat.
William Penman fonds. – 1904-1962. – ca. 2800 photographs, ca. 1100 prints and 0.36 m of
textual records (1.39 m).
William Penman (1878-1962) grew up in Manitoba, moving to Victoria in 1909. His pastimes
included motor boating, automobile driving, fishing, hunting and photography. He began to
transport people in his motor launch or automobile for hire in 1913. His chauffeur service
included long drives for tourists around Greater Victoria and up island.
William Penman's brother, Robert "Newt" Penman (1883-1969), joined the Canadian Army in
1917 and took flight training in Ontario and Texas. He took over the Windsor Taxi Stand from
his brother about 1926.

Fonds consists of photographs, picture postcards, diaries, scrapbooks and miscellaneous
printed material. The photographs include views of Manitoba, and Victoria and Vancouver
Island; travels in North America, and Canadian military aircrew training during World War I.
Also includes a scrapbook compiled by Alexander Cowie of Langford during World War I.
John Humbert. McConnell fonds. – [ca. 1900-1920]. – ca. 230 photographs (0.06 m).
John McConnell was president of Sweeney-McConnell Printers and Stationers. In his youth he
played baseball and later was a member of a number of fraternal organizations and Victoria
Typographical Union No. 201.

Hudson W. Blake fonds. – 1910-1923. – ca. 400 photographs.
William Blake (1883-1964) played lacrosse as a young man. He was a sign painter who ran his
own shop for 40 years. In 1923 he married Hazel Smith and had two children, Hudson and
Peggy.

Fonds consists of photographs of relatives and friends of Hudson Blake's father William Alfred
Blake. Group photos include classes at Oaklands School, lacrosse teams and Canadian Army
units (World War I).

Frank Allwood (1889-1946) was resident engineer during construction of the Johnson Street
Bridge in Victoria. Between 1919 and 1927 Frank and his wife, Eileen, produced and acted in
plays and musicals in the Pantages Theatre.

John Barnsley came to B.C. in the 1880s. He ran a sporting goods store in Victoria and later
went to work for the Union Steamship Company. Barnsley died in 1924 at the age of 63.

Dennis Harris (1851-1932) was a surveyor who contributed to the Canadian Pacific Railway
survey in the 1870s. He settled in Victoria, marrying Martha Douglas, youngest daughter of Sir
James and Lady Amelia Douglas.

Janet Bowden (ca. 1886-1976) made friends with Judith Phillipps-Wolley, daughter of the
writer and well-known imperialist Sir Clive Phillipps-Wolley, while attending The Cliffs, a
private school in Duncan.
Martin Grainger (1874-1941), who spent a number of years in northern British Columbia,
wrote "Woodsmen of the West" based on his experiences.

Robert Williams (1849-1934) ran a bookbinding business in Victoria for many years and
published directories of British Columbia. He served on the Victoria City Council from 1894 to
1902 and 1931 to 1934.

Francis Rattenbury (1867-1935) was a prominent Victoria architect. In 1898 he married
Florence Nunn and had two children, Francis Burgoyne and Mary (Burton). He later married
Alma Pakenham, with whom he had one son, John. Rattenbury was murdered in England by
his wife's paramour.

Victoria and sent to detention camps in the British Columbia Interior.

of Commerce, and was Aide-de-Camp for the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia.

Founded in 1863, the Victoria Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in 1878 as the British
Columbia Board of Trade. From 1902 until 1921 it was known as the Victoria, British Columbia
Board of Trade, when it again became the Victoria Chamber of Commerce.
Fonds includes minutes, scrapbooks, financial records, reports, bylaws, photographs and
publications.

Association, an organization established in 1892 to fund construction of the Board of Trade

The retail clothing firm of W & J Wilson Ltd. began business in Victoria in 1863, remaining in
the Wilson family until 1956, when it was incorporated. Though expanded over the years to
include outlets in Banff, Lake Louise, Nanaimo, Vancouver, and the Empress Hotel, its main
store remains located on Government Street in Victoria.

William Wilson (1838-1922) founded the Victoria retail clothing firm of W & J Wilson. He was
an active businessman, who also served both as an Alderman on Victoria City Council and as a
Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

Alfred Flumerfelt (1856-1930) was a Victoria businessman actively involved in the community.
He was married to Ada Kilvington, with whom he had two daughters, Norma and Gertrude.

Ellen Laundy, the daughter of Bishop Cridge, married the Reverend Thomas Laundy, whose
fourth child was Helen Forbes.

The Victoria Chemical Company, founded in part by Frederick Moore, manufactured acids,
fertilizers and tree sprays. It later merged with other companies to become the Canadian
Explosives Company. About 1912, it moved its operations to James Island.

worked for Vancouver Island Coach Lines. An avid horsewoman and frequent traveler, she
was also involved with several organizations.

The Rotary Club of Victoria is a service organization that was founded in 1913 and chartered
in 1914 as the 90th club of Rotary International. The primary objective of the Rotary is
captured in the motto “service above self.” Rotary members seek to realize this objective in
their communities, workplaces, and throughout the world. Club members meet weekly and
membership consists of individuals from a variety of business and professional backgrounds.
Fonds consists of 23 series of organizational records, including constitution and bylaws,
charter, annual reports, minutes, correspondence, financial statements, membership records,
club bulletins, project records, conference and events records, historical files, scrapbooks,
photographs, and artifacts.

Mouat family fonds. – 1852-1932. – 0.11 m of textual records.
William Alexander Mouat was born in London, England in 1821. A master mariner and
employee of the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC), Mouat came to Victoria in 1845. Mouat was
married to Mary Ann Ainsley, which whom he had seven children. Mouat died in 1871 on a
canoe trip while serving as Chief Trader for the HBC in Fort Rupert.
Fonds consists primarily of personal records of the family, including correspondence,
photographs, a scrapbook, a school exercise book, and published material. The fonds also
includes William Alexander Mouat’s business records.
