He grew up to be an impassioned advocate for the working harbour and the need to preserve waterfront industrial lands in Victoria. In his introduction of the speaker, Chris Causton noted that the City of Victoria has announced that it is planing to spend $100k on a study about beautifying the lands around the harbour. Chris suggested that they could just save the money and come to our monthly series of talks about the harbour. Chris noted that he has only ever seen Ian dressed in a T-shirt and jeans and that he was reluctant to come to the Union Club because of the dress code. In order to make him feel comfortable, Chris himself came dressed in a T-shirt (under a V-neck pullover) and he pulled on a baseball cap, but Ian surprised him by coming in a button up shirt. After telling us about the speaker's humble birth, he noted that Ian started working at 15 and married at 18. His first job was driving a truck for Island Asphalt. In 1983 he took on sole proprietorship of RalMax, which now includes the RalMax group of companies (including Pt. Hope Shipyard, Ellice Recycle, Harjim Mechanical, Island Plate and Steel, Trio Ready Mix and United Engineering. In starting his talk Ian noted how integral the harbour is to the city, and that the downtown streetscape, which is so confusing to visitors, is laid out in relation to the configuration of the harbour. While the streets may be confusing, if you are coming in by ship, it makes a lot of sense. Victoria's harbour has always been a safe haven. It has deep , clean water, and is protected from storms at sea. This was recognized by local and regional First Nations, and by early European navigators. The Lekwangun people recognized the harbour assets and used this area to trade with their relatives from Puget Sound and Oregon. G oing further with regard to the harbour assets, Ian noted that marine barges provide the cheapest way to move bulk goods - with items including gravel, fuel, recycled materials etc. Victoria continues to play a role in the west coast's marine corridor. It was interesting to learn that while Esquimalt has a larger harbour, early European settlers chose Victoria to be the site of the settlement because the trees in Esquimalt were too large to cut down! It took 150 years of development in Victoria and Esquimalt to make Point Hope Shipyard an overnight success. Ian got involved in 2003. He had never run a shipyard, but the operation was in bankruptcy and the City assigned him the lease. According to Ian the bankruptcy was not due to lack of viability of the business, but because there had been no encouragement to invest in infrastructure. The equipment used to get boats out of the water was badly aging. Also, there was no guarantee of longevity, with the surrounding lands being bought up for condominium developments. People did not want to invest in industry if they risked getting kicked out or being unwanted by residential neighbours. He concedes that his property would be a great site for condos, but that there is another way to invest in those sites. We saw slides that showed a significant reduction in industrially zoned land at the harbourfront since 1981. There was no earlier slide, but there was even more available land in the 1970's. The point was made that we need to maintain and invest in land for the long term - beyond our lifetime. Point Hope has a long legacy - some employees are the third generation of their family working on the site. It was interesting to learn that the average wage for the employees is $100,000 and the highest earner gets $150,000, which is more than company executives make. Both Point Hope Shipyards and United Engineering have new contracts in the pipeline, including projects in Kitimat and Prince Rupert. The company is generating wealth for the community and integrates well with its residential neighbours in Victoria West. Colin Smith thanked Ian, providing him with our club card and a certificate for bed nets in Ghana. The Sarge Posted by Pieta VanDyke on Feb 12, 2014 Reid James was absent so avoided a fine for turning his hotel in to a Valentine's Day boudoir. Richard Burke - was fined for being mean to the staff. Paul Doherty and Troy Alexander missed the Board meeting. Paul because he was hobnobbing with politicians while Troy was in the bar listening to a questionable comedian. Russ Cape fined for harassing the Sarge Wayne Ford fined for getting a photo of one of his buildings on the cover of the Victoria Office Market Report. Angus MacPherson fined for his photo on the front page of the Business Examiner. Denis Pare (a regular visitor) was fined for his Amor's de Cosmos impersonation. Chris Causton was fined for wearing a T shirt. David Iles was fined for double booking the Sarge with the scribe duties on the same day. David Iles was fined for double booking the Sarge with the scribe duties on the same day. Given that she had just returned from Guatemala, the Sarge posed both Central America and Olympics trivia questions. Remembering the name of the Honduran city where we have an education project (Tegucigalpa) was a total loss, so no need to ask how it is spelled. Similarly, the next group did not know the other name for Quetzeltenango (it is Xela) or one of the greatest dangers impacting Guatemala? (Not a natural disaster) It is the drug trade and the influence of "Narcos". Similarly little luck, though lots of fines in identifying a poem by Keats about "stout Cortez" who stood on a peak in Darien (which is in Mexico). There was better luck with Olympics trivia. Members could name the body of water on which Sochi is located. (The Black Sea) and sort of knew that Vancouver Island's Spencer O'Brien competed in a sport known as snowboard slopestyle They blew a question on three definitions of Moguls, as it wasn't moguls that invaded India, but Mongols. They knew that our club's Mike Creery was an Olympic athlete in running, but did not know that Chloe and Justine Dufour-Lapointe, mogul skiers, have a sister named Maxime Club Announcements Posted by Pieta VanDyke on Feb 12, 2014 President Mary thanked all those who came to Club in a Pub - a record turn out! At next week's meeting we will have special visitors - Mr. and Mrs. Taguchi from our Japanese sister club, Morioka South Rotary Club, and former club member Doug Potentier, who will be hosting them. Mary also reported that the club delegation that went to Guatemala had a great time and will be reporting on their trip at the next meeting. 50/50 Draw Posted by Pieta VanDyke on Feb 12, 2014 Dennis Sutton pulled the 9 of Hearts, not the target 9 of Hearts. He left the $10 in the pot. Happy & Sad Posted by Pieta VanDyke on Feb 12, 2014 The Sarge started off by saying she was happy to have been part of the group going to Guatemala, and distributed gifts. Colin Smith presented a nice donation (for Polio Plus) to thank Angus MacPherson for the use of his truck. Cheryl Thomas is happy to live in Dockside Green, overlooking Point Hope shipyard where she gets to look at working class hunks. David Isles was happy to hear that Troy Alexander was able to hear Mick Foley, who apparently is very funny (Paul Doherty says more funny than the Premier). Ann Moskow was happy to announce that our final net take from Christmas cakes was $17,000!! Gerry Kelly returned from Palm Desert, where he was part of the increased attendance at their Rotary Club (and the reduction in ours). Bill Feyrer reported on a good spoof at the Belfry. Dennis Sutton was sad that he and his wife have had to move again. Visitor Kathryn Burton is happy that she has been appointed the CEO of the Mt. St. Mary's Foundation.
