About Aachen Aachen is a medium-sized city of 250,000 residents, whose life is conditioned by the city’s geographical location. In Germany’s most western city, the borders between Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, are only a few kilometres away from the city centre. People in this region are even able to live in Germany, work in the Netherlands and dine in Belgium! The attractions of living in this triangle include a colourful mix of languages as well as short distances to cities such as Maastricht, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Brussels and Amsterdam. Aachen is an ancient spa city, whose hot springs have been valued for their curative properties from Roman times up to the present day. Cultural highlights of the city are the city cathedral, the city hall and the cathedral treasury. Over the past decades, Aachen has been marked by a fast development in the high-tech sector. These developments have also brought a youthful, urbane, and metropolitan flair to Aachen, with a lively club scene, modern sports facilities and many arts and cultural programs. Aachen also is a university town with about 40,000 students (apart from RWTH Aachen University’s 30,000 students, the city also hosts 8,000 students at Aachen University of Applied Sciences and some smaller institutions of higher eduction). Its young people enjoy the bustling life at Pontstraße, a street full of cafés, bars, movie theatres and shops. tudents ational S rn te In r fo l o o h c S r Summe achen A e c n e i r e p x e – Learn German , Ger many hen University ac A H T W R * 9 0 August 07-28, 20 Contact Information For further information on the program, please contact Ms Britta Piel Tel. +49-241-8090667 [email protected] www.rwth-aachen.de/summerschool www.rwth-aachen.de/summerschool l Students rnationa te In r fo l o o h c S r e Summ achen A e c n e i r e p x e – Learn German , Ger many hen University ac A H T W R * 9 0 0 August 07-28, 2 Programme description Course scope and content In 2009, RWTH Aachen University offers a new programme uniquely designed for international students. The main target group for this programme are students who want to study German in an academic atmosphere and get to know Aachen and RWTH Aachen University first-hand. The programme is also recommended for students who think about going to Aachen as an exchange student during their studies, but would like to get to know the city and university beforehand. German language courses will be taught on two levels, depending on the students’ previous knowledge. Exchange students from partner universities who stay for the winter term 2008/09 can continue with the German language course for exchange students in September 2009. Students will have 20 hours of instruction each week over a period of four weeks. All students will be required to participate in a placement test to determine their level of knowledge. While following an intensive academic programme offered through the university’s language centre, students also have the opportunity to experience German culture hands-on through a leisure time program organized by the International Office, to meet German and international students, and to visit important German and European sights. Accommodation At the end of the programme, participants will receive a certificate stating the contents of the course, ECTS credits received, and their performance in these courses (where applicable). Participants will stay in one of RWTH Aachen University’s student accommodations. They will be placed in single or double rooms or apartments, all offering the possibility to prepare meals in a shared kitchen. Support The International Office’s experienced staff will take care of the participants during the summer school. Additional student tutors will guarantee the participants’ interaction with German students and help them with questions during their stay. International students currently studying at RWTH Aachen University will also be included in the cultural programme. Participants will receive a public transportation ticket for the entirety of their stay. Costs and Scholarships Course fees (€ 200,-), housing (around € 300 / month), living expenses (another € 300, depending on personal habits) and other costs amount to app. € 1200,- for the course. 20 scholarships of € 1000,- are available for qualified students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
