Year 5 Summer Newsletter
Dear Parents,
I hope you had an enjoyable holiday this Easter. Your children have made a great start to their final term in Year 5 and
are looking forward to many exciting opportunities in the Summer Term.
Curriculum
This half-term, the children are learning about the Mayans in our topic ‘A Search into the Unknown’. They really enjoyed
the carousel of activities linked to the Mayans, especially the new game of Pokotok! A learning booklet providing greater
detail on the learning journey of this unit has already been sent home. The date for this outcome is Friday 26th May at
9:15am.
After May half-term, we look forward to exploring Africa in our topic ‘A Twist in the Tail’ inspired by the wonderful story
‘Butterfly Lion’ by Michael Morpurgo.
Home Learning
Weekly reading diaries and alternate weeks of Maths/Literacy Home Learning will continue during Summer Term. Please
encourage your child to continue to read regularly at home, to change their reading books and sign their reading diary.
We have been very impressed with the creative topic based Home Learning Challenges completed by many of the
children so far this year. Home Learning Challenges can be found on the back of the Learning Booklet which goes home
when we start a new topic. As a reminder, the final collection of Home Learning challenges is always the last
Wednesday of each half-term. We now have an exciting new display area in year 5 for all the fantastic pieces of home
learning the children bring in.
SRE (Sex and Relationships Education)
The sex and relationships lessons will begin after May half term. If you would like to know more about the aspects we
cover please contact your child’s class teacher who will be happy to discuss this with you further. Your child will be
taught by their own class teacher unless prevented by sickness. In that event, the class will be taught by another
permanent member of staff, who is well known by the children.
These are the main learning objectives that we will be covering:
•
To understand the main stages of the human life cycle
•
To understand that life processes include nutrition/growth/movement and reproduction.
•
To understand the changes your body goes through during puberty (revision from Year 4).
•
To understand the responsibilities involved in caring for a baby
•
•
•
To understand the importance of a safe and healthy lifestyle.
To develop good relationships and respect differences between people
To develop strategies for resisting peer pressure
Uniform & PE Kit
Please could you ensure that your child has a PE kit and trainers in school on their P.E and O.S.A. days. With the warmer
weather, we will be practicing athletics skills on the field and it is essential that your child has the correct footwear.
Thank you for your support in keeping your children looking so smart in their uniforms. Can I please remind you that
summer shoes should be black, brown or white and as flat as possible as the children are more active in their play and
lessons and need a safe pair of shoes. School shorts should be plain grey and formal in style, not sports shorts. Again,
many thanks for your continued support.
Sports Morning
Parents are very welcome to come along and support their child in this event, which is being held after half-term:
Sports Morning: Friday 16th June
If it is raining, sports afternoon will be re-arranged.
Year 5 Reward Day
The children have been working incredibly hard this year; we have been really impressed by their enthusiasm, diligence
and creativity. After May half-term, we are planning a Year 5 Reward Day to encourage the children to stay focused and
maintain their high standards of behaviour during the remainder of the Summer Term. A letter explaining this in more
detail will follow shortly, including the ‘reward period’ and behaviour expectations required to ‘earn’ this opportunity.
Thank you for all your help and support this year. Please do not hesitate to get in touch should you have any queries or
concerns.
Yours sincerely,
Sophie Gordine
