World Population Lab

World Population Lab
Эльбрус Э кспедиции 2010
Purpose: Observe how land and population are distributed throughout the World.
Materials:
- One Sheet white 100 cell Grid Paper
- One Sheet green 100 cell Grid Paper
- Scissor & Pencil.
Introduction:
There are 6.6 billion people in the World today! (6,600,000,000) Can you picture 6.6 billion people all in
one area? What would that look like? Can you imagine 100 people together in one area? What would that
look like? Where might you see that many people together? For this activity you will need to imagine that
the World population is 100 people. We are using “100” as a number because it is the basis on which
percentage is calculated. (so basically we are using percentages out of 100 to look at population)
Procedure:
1. How many continents there? _____Please list them in the left hand column of the
Population chart below.
2. Look at your list of continents and predict the percentage of the Earth’s land each
continent occupies.
3. After you have your Estimation of Land % completed seek out your teacher to
share your estimations and to get the Actual % numbers before moving to the next
step.
4. Take the white grid paper, cut out the number of squares that represent each
continent and write the name of the continent on the back of each piece. (These
continent pieces will be used later in the lab.)

5. At this point please see the Population chart below and estimate the percentages of
world population by continent. Again visit your teacher to share your responses
and get the “actuals”.
6. Using the Actual % numbers, take the green grid paper and cut out the number of
squares that represent the population for each continent.

7. Take your green and white continent pieces and place them together. Please
answers the questions below using your continent pieces.
Conclusion and Analyses:
1) Are you surprised about the percentages?
2) Define…
Population Density
Population Distribution
2) Describe the difference between Population Distribution & Population Density.
3) What do you notice about the areas where people DON’T live?
4) What continent is the least densely populated by humans?
5) What continent is the most crowded or has the highest population density?
