This service allows Media Browse to re-transfer media between the AirSpeed and Avid Unity MediaNetwork in the event of a failed clip transfer. Default Time Setting AirSpeeds are shipped from Avid with the default time zone set to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). After changing the time as described in the Avid AirSpeed Installation and User’s Guide. You must click Shutdown and select “Restart User Interface” or “Restart Entire System” before the AirSpeed UI reflects the new time. 4 Hardware and Software Requirements Network IP Addresses When setting up the AirSpeed, you must use a static IP address. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is not supported in the initial release of AirSpeed. The “Obtain IP Address Automatically” described in the Avid AirSpeed Installation and Setup Guide has been removed from the AirSpeed UI for the initial release. For more information see, “AirSpeed UI Changes” on page 18. Features Not Supported in the Initial Release This initial release of AirSpeed supports capturing media through the serial digital interface (SDI) directly into workspaces on the Avid Unity MediaNetwork. A future release will add the capability of playing the media out as a media server. The following are the features not supported in the initial release: n Some of these functions might already be described in the Avid AirSpeed Installation and User’s Guide. This guide will be updated when the features become fully functional. • Play out, and functions associated with playing out • General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) connector • Sony® remote control protocol using BVW slave deck control operations • DVCAM PAL 4:2:0 is not supported • Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector (not used) The Avid AirSpeed Installation and Setup Guide states that software updates are performed using the USB connector. Although some manufacturing functions can be performed through the USB connector, the software updates are performed through the network as described in the guide. The use of a USB keyboard or mouse is not supported on the USB connector. 5 Version 1.0 Release Notes AirSpeed I/O Peripheral Applications An Avid AirSpeed I/O Peripheral CD-ROM is included with the AirSpeed enclosure. The CD-ROM includes Avid FlightPlan, Avid Pilot, Remote UI, and Editor Ingest Support. FlightPlan and Pilot have an online Help with the application. A hardcopy of the Avid AirSpeed FlightPlan and Pilot User’s Guide is included with the AirSpeed. The Remote UI is an application that provides remote access to the AirSpeed UI Setup settings. These settings are described in the Avid AirSpeed Installation and Setup Guide. Editor Ingest Support installs a file needed for accessing the AirSpeed from a remote network client. c The AirSpeed I/O Peripheral applications cannot be installed on the systems that have the AirSPACE applications installed: LaunchPad™ and MissionControl™. Updating Software The AirSpeed software upgrade process documented in the Avid AirSpeed Installation and User’s Guide requires an .iso file on the network which can be reached via a Web browser. Since the Avid Unity MediaManager runs a Web server, Avid recommends you use your MediaManager to provide such a directory. Before you can update your AirSpeed software through the network using the AirSpeed UI, you need to create a Web server directory on your Avid Unity MediaManager server. To set up a web server directory on your MediaManager: 1. On the MediaManager desktop, right-click My Computer and select Manage. 2. In the Computer Management window, expand Services and Applications > Internet Information Services > Default Web Site. 3. Right-click the OMM object and select Properties. 4. In the Properties dialog, check the Directory Browsing checkbox under Local Path. 5. Note the directory path shown in the Local Path box. 6 Supported Resolutions and Configurations 6. Click OK. This allows you to browse to the c:/omm directory level and below. 7. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the directory shown in the Local Path box, noted above. (This is typically c:/omm.) 8. In the omm directory, create a directory named “airspeed.” 9. Copy the AirSpeed_nn.iso file into the airspeed directory. c If you rename the AirSpeed .iso file, you must follow the naming requirements listed in the Software Tab section of the Avid AirSpeed Installation and User’s Guide. Supported Resolutions and Configurations AirSpeed v1.0 supports the following resolutions: • DV25 • DV50 • IMX (MPEG 50) The following list provides the maximum qualified configurations: • Ten AirSpeed enclosures can simultaneously capture DV 25 on a PortServer Pro II or LANshare EX at a time. Five AirSpeed enclosures can simultaneously capture DV 50 on a PortServer Pro II or LANshare EX at a time. • Twenty AirSpeed enclosures can simultaneously capture DV 25 on a Avid Unity system. Ten AirSpeed enclosures can simultaneously capture DV 50 on a Avid Unity system. This requires at least two PortServer Pro II or LANshare EX systems. 7 Version 1.0 Release Notes • n Table 1 list the combination of AirSpeeds and Avid editing systems that have been qualified on a PortServer Pro II or a LANshare EX while simultaneously capturing and editing. When recording DV 50 or MPEG 50 media, you are using twice the bandwidth of DV 25. Therefore half the amount of AirSpeeds can simultaneously record DV 50 or MPEG 50 than when recording DV 25. Table 1 AirSpeeds Per PortServer Pro II or LANshare EX Resolution AirSpeed Avid Editing Systems DV 25 a DV 50 or MPEG 50 10 5 0 0 DV 25 DV 50 or MPEG 50 8 4 1 1 DV 25 DV 50 or MPEG 50 6 3 2 2 DV 25 DV 50 or MPEG 50 4 2 3 3 DV 25 1 0 4 4 DV 50 or MPEG 50 a. AirSpeed records single-stream DV 25 to mirrored workspaces, the Avid editing system uses dual-stream DV 25. n 8 Capturing for 24 hours does not mean one 24-hour master clip but multiple master clips totaling 24 hours with a maximum of 3 hours per clip. • The AirSpeed can run for 24 hours per day for 7 days a week (eight, 3-hour capturing per day). • The maximum capturing time is 3 hours. Avid editing systems cannot open a clip that exceeds 3 hours. Special Notes Special Notes This section contains important information about the operation of the AirSpeed in your workgroup environment. Keyboard, Video, Mouse Switches Some Raritan™ keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switches fail to operate the AirSpeed correctly when using the newer thin 4 meter Raritan cables. To achieve the best performance from your AirSpeed, Avid recommends that you power cycle your AirSpeed once a week (7 days). Power cycling the AirSpeed refreshes the memory. 3-Button Mouse The middle button on a 3-button mouse can perform illegal actions and cause errors when used with the AirSpeed UI. Do not use a 3-button mouse with AirSpeed. Network Changes Using the AirSpeed UI Any changes made in the Setup > Network tab of the AirSpeed UI, will require you to restart the AirSpeed. You must click Shutdown and select “Restart Entire System.” LTC Input and Output The Longitudinal Timecode (LTC) connectors on the rear of the AirSpeed are designed to accept a valid LTC input and pass the signal through to the LTC Out 1 connector. This connection is used to daisy-chain the LTC signal to other devices. The LTC Out 2 functionality has not been implemented in the initial release of AirSpeed. 9 Version 1.0 Release Notes Audio Sample Rates When sharing media in a workgroup environment or playing out media on another device, make sure you select the audio sample rate that is compatible with your playout device. If you capture media with AirSpeed that contains 24-bit audio and attempt to transfer the 24-bit audio tracks to a device that is designed for 16-bit audio, errors might appear. Static Mounted Workspaces Avid recommends you use static mounted workspaces with the AirSpeed. You must disable dynamically mount workspaces on the Avid Unity PortServer. To disable dynamic mounted workspaces: 1. Log in to your Avid Unity PortServer. 2. Double-click PortServerConfiguration.exe in the following location: drive:\Program Files\Avid Technology\AvidUnity\PortServerStartup The Avid Unity PortServer Service Configuration window opens. 3. Uncheck “Enable dynamic mounting of MediaNetwork workspaces” if selected. 4. Click OK and log off the Avid Unity PortServer. DNS Server Not Used The AirSpeed does not display a warning that transfers and check-ins will fail when you deselect the “Use Following DNS Server” in the Setup > Network tab. The DNS server allows you to use DNS names to identify the MediaManager and PortServer in the Setup > Send tab. When a DNS server is not used, type in the IP addresses of the MediaManager and PortServer in the Setup > Send tab. Leave AirSpeed Capture Ready Control the AirSpeed using one method at a time. To be more specific, if you have scheduled captures using CaptureManager™, be aware that simultaneous use of other control applications such as Pilot and the AirSpeed UI can create conflicts which will result in scheduled feeds not being captured. 10 Special Notes To avoid such conflicts, make sure you unload the clip after you have captured or played a clip using a network application, and if you are manually controlling the AirSpeed with the buttons on the front panel. When using an automation control application to control the AirSpeed, make sure you leave the AirSpeed in an idle state with no clip loaded when finished. Internal Drives Filling and Failed Transfers If you suspect that the AirSpeed does not have all the space available on the internal drives that you feel it should, or if a capture is failing due to a lack of space, check the internal drives for clips that have not transferred. Clips are left on the AirSpeed due to failed or partial transfers caused by unexpected network events. To check for clips that have not transferred, use the Media Browse or FlightPlan application. If you see a clip that is listed in the Media Browse or FlightPlan application that does not appear in MediaManager, that clip has not transferred. If the clip is one you do not want, highlight the clip in the FlightPlan application and delete it. If you want the captured clip that is on the internal drives, drag the clip from FlightPlan to a Bin on your Avid editing system (such as NewsCutter) to manually transfer the clip. Once the transfer is complete, AirSpeed will delete the transferred clip through its Auto Delete process. You can also re-transfer clips that have failed to transfer by right-clicking the clip in Media Browse, and selecting “Transfer to Unity (server)” as long as the capture was successful. Multiple Domain Names and DNS servers In the event there is a failure with the primary domain and DNS server, multiple domains and DNS servers can be used as backups. To create multiple domain names and DNS serves: 1. Open a console window by simultaneously pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2. 2. Log in using: - login name — maint - password — mars 11 Version 1.0 Release Notes 3. At the command prompt, type cd /usr/home/pluto/etc, and press Enter. 4. Type vi secondary_dns, and press Enter. 5. Type i (this characters does not display, the editor goes into insert mode). n The “n” in the following step represents the IP address of the backup DNS servers on the network. You can enter as many DNS servers as you want. 6. Type the following to add additional DNS servers as backups: > nameserver nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn and press Enter > nameserver nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn and press Enter > Press Esc and type :wq! and press Enter 7. Close the console window by simultaneously pressing Ctrl+Alt+F3. 8. Restart the AirSpeed by selecting “Restart Entire System” in the Shutdown window of the AirSpeed UI. Checking Media Into Two Projects When the AirSpeed channel in Avid iNEWS™ Media Browse™ CaptureManager™ is set to check media into one project, and the Setup > Destination Template tab of the AirSpeed UI has a different Project entered, the media is checked into both projects. Either project can be deleted without affecting the other project as long as you do not delete the media. If the clip and the media files are deleted in one of the projects, the clip will still be available in the other project but the media will be offline. Auto Delete Recommendation The Auto Delete dialog box does not have any restraints on the numbers you can enter. When using Auto Delete, Avid recommends you do not set the start deleting value to more than 90% and that you set the stop deleting value at least 10% less than the start deleting value. n 12 Media is deleted after it has been transferred and saved to the Avid Unity MediaNetwork workspace. If AirSpeed is unable to transfer the media or if the workspace is filled, AirSpeed will continue to capture until the internal drives are filled. Once the condition is corrected, and the media is transferred, media will delete as specified in the Auto Delete dialog box. Special Notes Navigate to the Auto Delete dialog box in the AirSpeed UI as follows: Setup > System Config >Auto Delete The default Auto Delete settings are set to start deleting media when the internal drives are at 75% full and stop at 25% full. Virtual Network Computing As an alternative to using the Remote UI application, there is an application called Virtual Network Computing (VNC) which provides access to the AirSpeed UI from a remote computer. This cross-platform software allows you to perform all keyboard and mouse functions on the AirSpeed using a network connection. Multiple VNC sessions can be run simultaneously on a single computer. Each VNC session displays a single AirSpeed UI. Download the VNC Viewer client application and documentation from www.realvnc.com. To access AirSpeed via VNC Viewer over the network: 1. Download and install the VNC Viewer software. 2. Start VNC Viewer. 3. In the VNC Viewer: Connection Details dialog box, type the AirSpeed name or the IP address of the AirSpeed, and click OK. 4. At the VNC Viewer: Authentication dialog box type mars in the Password text box and click OK. 13 Version 1.0 Release Notes The AirSpeed UI displays in a window on your local system. Whatever process that is currently being performed on the AirSpeed is displayed in the window. You can click on any button, tab, and enter data from your remote system to control and configure the AirSpeed. Known Bugs ➤ The menu buttons (Play, Capture, Setup, Diagnostics, and Shutdown) on the AirSpeed UI might shift right unexpectedly. Workaround: To correct the AirSpeed UI shift, select Shutdown > Restart User Interface to reboot the AirSpeed software. ➤ When changing values in the Setup > System Config tab, the Save button (diskette icon) remains dimmed and does nothing when clicked unless Enter is pressed or you toggle one of the radio buttons to make the Save button become active. Workaround: When changing values in the Setup > System Config tab, press Enter to accept the change and enable the Save button, then click Save. 14 Known Bugs ➤ When editing clips that were captured across midnight using an AirSpeed, the embedded timecode will be missing from approximately 00:01:26:00 to the end of the clip. The captured clip does not report an end time in the bin, and causes a CM_OUT_OF_RANGE error when attempting move the locator bar by entering a numeric value via the keyboard. Workaround: To use the clip, clear the error dialog box and scrub or play the clip to the locator position you want, then set the Mark IN and Mark OUT points. The clip can then be edited into a sequence with a new timecode. n ➤ Media that is captured up to midnight or captures starting at midnight work correctly. Some Setup tabs in the AirSpeed UI could display as a split screen when the Revert button is used to return to the previous settings. After you clear the Revert dialog box, the AirSpeed UI might display the top of one setting window and the bottom of another. To correct the split screen the AirSpeed UI needs to be restarted. To correct a split screen using the AirSpeed UI and keyboard: 1. Press Alt+Tab to select the Shutdown button. 2. Press Tab 3 times, to move the selection to the OK button. 3. Press the Space bar, to select okay. Your AirSpeed UI will restart and clear the split screen condition. To correct a split screen using the a Telnet session: 1. Start your Telnet session on a network client. n For information on accessing an AirSpeed through a Telnet session, see the Avid AirSpeed Installation and Setup Guide. 2. Log in using: - login name — maint - password — mars 3. At the command prompt, type kbs, and press Enter. The AirSpeed UI shuts down. 4. Type rm /var/tmp/lock.runbs, and press Enter. 15 Version 1.0 Release Notes Your AirSpeed UI will restart in approximately 30 seconds. ➤ When in the FlightPlan application, if you select an AirSpeed from the Server list that is no longer available on the network, the application searches the network then displays a dialog box informing you the connection has failed. After you click OK to close the dialog box, FlightPlan remains unresponsive for approximately 20 seconds after the connection time-out dialog box is closed. ➤ Some AirSpeeds might not reappear in the Status viewer after an Avid Unity File Manager failover error. Even though an AirSpeed might not be listed, transfers to Avid Unity and check-ins to MediaManager continue to occur. ➤ When you drag and drop a clip to an Avid editing system using FlightPlan, the percentage displayed when completed is not intuitive, and inconsistent between video formats. The Avid editor displays the following percentages when transfer is complete. For PAL: • 0 tracks of audio — 100% • 2 tracks of audio — 107% • 4 tracks of audio — 115% • 8 tracks of audio — 131% For NTSC ➤ • 0 tracks of audio — 100% • 2 tracks of audio — 108% • 4 tracks of audio — 116% • 8 tracks of audio — 132% When you are in Retroloop mode and press Stop to cancel the Retroloop capture, the temporary clip that was created for the Retroloop is not deleted. To delete the clip from the AirSpeed: 1. Click the Play button in the AirSpeed UI. 2. Load the clip if is not already loaded. 3. Click the Delete button. 16 Known Bugs To delete the clip from FlightPlan: 1. Start FlightPlan application. 2. Connect the AirSpeed in question. 3. Highlight the clip and press the Delete key on your keyboard or select File > Delete from the menu. ➤ n After AirSpeed has captured a clip and it has been checked into MediaManager, you might receive a message stating “Capture in progress” when you drag the clip from MediaManager into the Avid editor’s bin. This is more likely to happen on captures over 30 minutes and could occur on captures completed minutes, hours, or days ago. Workaround: Right-click on the clip in bin and select Overwrite MediaManager Capture Lock. The Avid editor overwrites the metadata on the MediaManager that was checked in by AirSpeed. ➤ When attempting to create a clip in Absolute mode using the AirSpeed UI or the Pilot application, and the duration exceeds the available room on the workspace, the AirSpeed front panel buttons become unresponsive with the Stop button lit. The Pilot application displays an “Out of disk space” message. Workaround: If this error condition occurs, correct the duration or initiate a new Absolute or Virtual capture using either the AirSpeed UI or the Pilot application within the available room on the workspace. The front panel button functionality is restored. Pilot and FlightPlan ➤ To Delete Protect a clip, right-click on a clip and select Delete Protect from the pop-up menu. Currently, the Delete Protection shortcut key combination (CTRL+P) in the Pilot and the FlightPlan applications is inoperable. To UnDelete Protect a clip, right-click on a clip and select UnDelete Protect from the pop-up menu. Currently, the Undelete Protection shortcut key combination (CTRL+U) in the Pilot and the FlightPlan applications is inoperable. 17 Version 1.0 Release Notes Documentation The following sections include changes that have occurred since the Avid AirSpeed Installation and User’s Guide was complete. AirSpeed UI Changes Chapter 5 of the Avid AirSpeed Installation and User’s Guide describes the Setup button in the AirSpeed UI. The following changes have been made since the guide was printed: n • The VITC Output Line Select setting that is shown and described in the Setup > Channels tab does not exist in the initial release of AirSpeed. • The Obtain IP Address Automatically setting that is shown and described in Setup > Network tab does not exist in the initial release of AirSpeed. The Obtain IP Address Automatically setting in the Avid AirSpeed RemoteUI application is not supported in the initial release of AirSpeed. Do not select this setting in the RemoteUI > Network tab. Retroloop Update The second window in the AirSpeed UI > Setup > System Config tab provides the settings for Retroloop™ mode. The Retroloop Time numeric text box allows you to enter the amount of time (in seconds) you want to capture before an unknown event occurs. You must select a Retroloop Time between 60 seconds and 14280 seconds (approximately 4 hours). AirSpeed continuously captures media in a loop, using this predetermined amount of time. The maximum allowed value cannot exceed the total amount of disk space on the AirSpeed internal drives. When the internal drives are empty, the following table provides the approximate seconds available per video and audio format. n 18 The number of channels selected for the capture does not affect the predetermined amount of space. AirSpeed assumes eight tracks of audio are being captured in Retroloop mode. Technical Support Information Internal Drive Capture Time per Video and Audio Format Resolution 16-bit Audio 24-bit Audio DV 25 28620 seconds (7 hours 57 minutes) 26820 seconds (7 hours 27 minutes) DV 50 14280 seconds (3 hours 58 minutes) 13380 seconds (3 hours 43 minutes) IMX 50 (MPEG 50) 18000 seconds (5 hours 05 minutes) 17160 seconds (4 hours 46 minutes) Technical Support Information Most products feature a number of coverage options.
