During the winter of 1778-79, Betsy was paid by the Continental Congress for making musket cartridges in her home! George Washington’s dentures were not made of wood. They were made of natural teeth set into a framework of hippopotamus ivory. Some historians believe that the denture teeth were human, others believe they were crafted from walrus or elephant ivory.
