the 2003 season included turf walkways to the plate as well as a turf ring that surrounds the home
Forrest Hoglund
Att.
This past fall, the foul lines were brought in 20 feet to make new dimensions of 330-392-330,
plate area.
Prior to the 2003 season, construction was completed on a pair of new batting cages down the
right and left field lines, while a new home bullpen was constructed and a blacktop surface added to the right field
bullpen area.
Prior to the 1999 season, $1.8 million in renovations were made in an effort to improve Hoglund Ballpark. Seating
capacity was increased, a new pressbox was built, dugouts were expanded, additional men’s and women’s restrooms were
added and a plaza entrance is now featured. A gift from Forrest Hoglund primarily funded the renovations.
Prior to the 1990 season, a new backstop netting was installed, which replaced a chain link structure and improved
spectator sight lines. A batter's eye in center field and picnic area behind the left field fence were constructed just before
the start of the 1992 campaign.
In 1987, more than $450,000 in renovations were made to the Jayhawks' home facility, which was referred to as
Quigley Field at the time. In addition to the closed deck bleacher seating, a new press box, restrooms, concession stands,
public address system, computerized scoreboard and lighting were installed. A major gift from Hoglund and Neil
Mecaskey funded the stadium improvements and the lighting.
For 27 years, Quigley Field was the home of the Jayhawks. Built in 1958, the field was named after one of the most
successful athletics directors in Kansas history, Ernest C. Quigley. KU athletics underwent a major resurgence under
Quigley from 1944-1950, which included the Jayhawks’ last conference championship in 1949. Quigley himself was a
well-known figure in the sports world. He spent 33 years as an umpire in the National League, including working six
World Series. He also was a nationally-known football and basketball official. In these capacities, he worked three Rose
Bowls, 19 AAU basketball tournaments and one Olympic basketball tournament.

2004 Kansas Baseball
Anderson Family Strength and Conditioning Center
The $8 million, 42,000-square-foot Anderson Family Strength and Conditioning
Center, opened in the Spring of 2003, features weight training equipment, a cardiovascular workout area and lockers.
“By helping build a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning center, the Anderson
family has assisted us in our continuing efforts to attract and retain excellent athletes,”
Chancellor Robert Hemenway said. “The Andersons’ remarkable generosity will be
appreciated by all of KU’s many student-athletes and coaches.”
Floyd Temple Locker Room
The KU baseball team has exclusive access to the Floyd Temple Locker Room. Built
as a part of the multi-million dollar Athletics Complex Expansion in 1994, the locker
room provides the baseball team with facilities that are second to none.
Located next to the Dean Nesmith Training Room, the Floyd Temple Locker Room
is equipped with individual lockers, showers and a video viewing area. A separate locker room for the Jayhawk coaches is also a part of the locker room area.
Anschutz Sports Pavilion
The indoor practice facility for many Jayhawk teams, Anschutz Pavilion is a 40,000square-foot multi-purpose building which includes Ray Evans Field, Bill Easton Track
and a 100-yard field with new turf installed in 1999.
Dean Nesmith Training Facility
The completion of the Dean Nesmith training facility in 1994 marked a high-point
for the Kansas Athletics Department.
The 4,000 square-foot facility contains a hydrotherapy area, treatment area with private examinations rooms, a rehabilitation area, taping and first aid space and staff
offices.
The training room functions to provide for the health and welfare of 500 student-athletes, and as an internship setting for students pursuing the sports science major/athletic training emphasis degree program at Kansas.

Big 12 Conference
A decade of excellence and future promise converge for the Big
12 Conference on Feb. 25, 2004. The Big 12 celebrates the 10-year
mark of its founding - Feb. 25, 1994 - and remains dedicated to celebrating the student-athletes, competitive excellence, scholarship,
sportsmanship, and competitive equity.
Dedicated to achieving the highest goals in the integration of academic and athletic endeavors, Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas,
Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,
Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech combined forces in '94, and
formed the Big 12 Conference-a league covering seven states and
encompassing over 40 million people (2000 U.S. census).
The conference pays particular attention to sportsmanship and a
level field of play for the 4,500-plus student-athletes in 21 sports.
Those competing and coaching in the Big 12 seek maximum training on the fields and courts as well as in
the classroom and community.
Along with this competitive excellence, scholarship has been
and continues to be a point
of emphasis with the Big 12.
There are 19 academic honor
teams (first and second
units), and the semiannual
Commissioner's
Honor
Roll salutes student-athletes
who have achieved 3.0 averages (four-point grading scale) in
the semester previous to the
announcement. Annually, as many as
50-60 student-athletes from the league make these teams with perfect 4.0 grade point averages.
Each member institution also nominates a male or female student-athlete for one of the prestigious Big 12 Conference postgraduate scholarships at the end of the academic year. More than 70
aspiring scholars have received almost $400,000 in financial aid during the first six years of the program.
Sportsmanship has been a item high on the Big 12 agenda since
Commissioner Kevin Weiberg became the league's third chief executive in Dec., 1998. The Conference developed and has maintained
a Sportsmanship Statement which applies to all student-athletes,
coaches and administrators throughout the league. The Big 12 also
honors one male and female student-athlete each year as Big 12
Sportsperson of the Year.
The level playing field for participants in all Big 12 sports also
figures into competitive equity. This does not deny the potential for
national team champions in any sport but seeks to provide an
avenue in which up-and-coming student-athletes can display their
top individual talents within the framework of Conference and
NCAA sports' guidelines.
Big 12 schools and the Conference office seek to provide national-class facilities for all levels of league championships, post-season
6 www.kuathletics.com
tournaments and NCAA venues. They utilize Big 12 campus sites as
well as buildings such as Kansas City's Kemper Arena, Arrowhead
Stadium and Municipal Auditorium, Houston's Reliant Stadium,
San Antonio's Alamodome, St. Louis' Edward Jones Dome, Irving's
Texas Stadium, Oklahoma City's SBC Bricktown Ballpark, The
Ballpark in Arlington, Dallas' American Airlines Center and
Reunion Arena, among others.
Not only has the Big 12 fostered a spirit of conviviality and
excitement with newfound rivalries, but the Conference has given
rise to several related, cooperative ventures-Big 12 cities, libraries,
campus security organizations, Chambers of Commerce,
tourism/visitors' bureaus, information exchanges, sports medicine
associations, and campus public information offices, among others.
The solid athletics' traditions at the 12 schools are evident as student-athletes/alumni have claimed
more than 900 NCAA crowns and
over 170 national team championships prior to the 2003-04 academic year. Commissioner Weiberg,
acting in accord with the
Big 12 Board of Directors,
first contracted most major
championship sites and
dates through the 2004-05
academic year in 1999. The
Big 12 is in the process of
determining future championships' dates
and sites-potentially through the 2007-08
academic years-during the 2003-04 term.
The league office also has negotiated critical media (television/radio/print) contracts and ongoing bowl agreements. New in
2002-03 were agreements with TBS Superstation to carry Big 12
football games in prime time slots, with College Sports Television for
more regional and national telecasts, and expanded video streaming
opportunities for several Olympic sports within the league with Fox
Sports Net and FoxSports.com.
Almost five million fans who attended championships or tournaments in Big 12 post-season activity since 1996 can attest that they
are viewing some of the nation's finest student-athletes, coaches and
officials.

2004 Kansas Baseball
Outlook
2004 Outlook: The Future Is Now...
The Future Is Now.
That phrase, coined by seniors Ryan Baty and
Matt Tribble along with junior Travis Metcalf, fits
the 2004 Jayhawk baseball team like a glove. After
registering the third-most wins in school history and
boasting two National Players of the Week along
with five Big 12 Players of the Week last season,
head coach Ritch Price has every reason to believe
the future of the Kansas baseball program begins in
2004.
“As a coach, you want high expectations,” Price
said. “We want to build a program here to the point
where the team is expected to win every game and
to where the teams we face know they must play
well to beat us.”
There is no doubt with the second-year skipper’s
intensity and drive, along with his baseball knowledge, the 2004 Kansas baseball team is on course to
take the next step.
Pitchers
In 2004, pitching coach Steve Abney will have
his hands full of transfers that were named by
Collegiate Baseball as one of the top recruiting classes in the country. Abney will have a total of 12 newcomers on the staff, who will be effective in a number of ways.
Senior Ryan Knippschild figures to be the team’s
top starter, while senior Chris Smart, who came on
late last season as the team’s third man, will work to

solidify a spot in the rotation. Transfers Mike
Zagurski, a 2003 first-team Jayhawk Conference
selection at Hutchinson Community College, and
Ken Livesey, a 43rd-round draft pick by the Atlanta
Braves in 2002, will vie for spots in the starting rotation and possibly play integral roles out of the KU
bullpen. Several other Jayhawks are looking to
improve on KU’s 2003 team ERA of 5.27. Junior
Jacob Jean is a junior college transfer that was selected in the 43rd round of the 2002 draft by the
Minnesota Twins. Junior Andrew Rebar was an AllJayhawk Conference selection from Neosho County
Community College. Junior Clint Schambach was
a 2003 NJCAA Division II second team All-Region
selection. Junior Scott Sharpe, a transfer from the
University of Arkansas-Little Rock, worked 5.1
innings for the Trojans against Kansas in 2003, and
will be used in middle relief situations. In addition,
sophomore Thomas Bischoff, junior Michael
Saddler and freshman Matt Lane, a native of
Lawrence, will also be used out of the Jayhawk
bullpen. Coming back for their second seasons as
Jayhawk pitchers are senior Brandon Johnson, the
team leader in saves (7) during the 2003 season and
sophomore Don Czyz, who struck out a total of 40
batters in just 40.1 innings of work in 2003.
The Jayhawks have also enlisted help from overseas this season, with the addition of Ryotaro
Hayakawa to the roster. A freshman from Narita,
Japan, Hayakawa practiced with KU in the fall and
proved to be a crafty righthander that stands only 59 and weighs 170 pounds.
Three hurlers are coming off injuries -- junior
John Fumagalli, a transfer from Neosho County
Community College; junior Tyson Bothof and
sophomore Chris Jones, both Jayhawk veterans,
were limited in the fall but will be seen in 2004 and
hope to make a big impact.
The Kansas pitching staff looks to have the firepower to carry the ‘Hawks down the stretch,
enabling them to take the next step.
Junior Travis Metcalf
Flynn. Flynn made 50 starts behind the plate and
played in 61 of the Jayhawks’ 63 games.
“Sean (Richardson) is considered by many baseball scouts to be the top junior college catcher in
California,” Price said. “He is a tremedous athlete.
I expect him to be a team leader and a great player
in the Big 12 Conference.”
Two freshmen, Paul Shirley, a native of Hot
Springs, Ark., and John Allman, a Fenton, Mo.,
native, are also working to help the ‘Hawks behind
the dish.
Infield
Defense is the key to winning according to Price,
who made improving the defense a priority when he
took the job. Last year Kansas’ four infielders
bought into his theories, and produced the best KU
infield in school history. It committed only 73
errors in 2,396 chances, for a fielding percentage of
.970. The percentage topped the old KU mark of
.965, accomplished in 2001, and ranked first in the
Big 12.
The Jayhawks return all four infielders that
helped them set the Kansas mark and earn the top
fielding percentage in the conference. Senior pre-
Catchers
Kansas boasts a total of five
catchers on the 2004 roster. Two
of those five -- senior Jake
Kauzlarich and junior Mike
Bessolo -- have experienced the Big
12 Conference, but junior Sean
Richardson is looking to earn the
starting nod from Price. In 2003,
at Palomar Junior College,
Richardson, who was drafted by
the Detroit Tigers in both the
2001 and 2002 MLB Drafts,
earned first-team All-Pacific Coast
honors as well as being a 2003
first-team Junior College AllAmerica selection. He will be
asked to follow in the footsteps of
last year’s Walt Houk Newcomer of
the Year Award winner, Sean
Senior Ryan Baty
Outlook
season All-America selection Ryan Baty returns for his final season at KU, after
setting the Kansas single-season hits mark (97) in 2003. Baty, a native of
Wichita, Kan., was named National Player of the Week (2/11/03) after his
opening-week performance in Hilo, Hawaii. He went on to garner ABCA second-team All-Region honors at first base.
“If Ryan comes out and has the best year of his career he will have the opportunity to leave Kansas as the best offensive player in school history,” Price said.
Completing the right side is Baty’s younger brother, sophomore Matt Baty.
The younger Baty jumped into a regular starting role at second base on March
30, 2003, and finished with a batting average of .336, which ranked third on the
squad.
KU’s mainstay at shortstop will be sophomore Ritchie Price, who returns for
his second season in Lawrence. Price, who can play both middle infield positions, was named All-Big 12 honorable mention after starting 60 games for KU
and breaking the all-time freshman mark for hits in a season (75) and sacrifices
(17). Price’s 17 sacs also set a new Kansas single-season mark.
Travis Metcalf spurned a late offer in the fall from the Minnesota Twins to
return to KU for his junior season at the hot corner. Metcalf, who was named
National Player of the Week on Feb. 17, 2003, ranked second on the team with
11 home runs in only 52 games. A native of Wamego, Kan., Metcalf will look
to solidify himself as one of the top power hitters in Jayhawk baseball history.
Other newcomers waiting for an opportunity to contribute are junior Travis
Dunlap, a 2003 first team Junior College All-American from Porterville
Community College; sophomore Jared Schweitzer, a native of Lethbridge,
Alberta, who will also split time as a catcher; junior Mike Dudley, a junior college transfer from Garden City Community College; freshmen Eric Snowden
and Lawrence Free State graduate, Matt Berner.
Senior Kyle Kilgo is the lone returning reserve from last season. Kilgo started 10 games during 2003, and sported a .273 average with a total of nine runs
scored.
A promising prospect that will split time as a first baseman and left handed
pitcher is fershman Sean Land, a native of Greenwood, Mo., and Lee’s Summit
High School.
“Sean has the ability to be a quality two-way player with his bat speed and
size,” head coach Ritch Price said. “Sean has the potential to be a big-time player at KU.”
2004 Kansas Baseball
Outfield
Matt Tribble,
whose 20-game hit
streak in 2003 set a
Kansas record, will
lead a host of new
but talented athletes in the Jayhawk
outfield. In left
field, the job looks
to be taken by junior Andy Scholl, a
sweet-swinging
lefty who was
selected in the 45th
round of the 2002
draft by the Kansas
City Royals. Scholl
transferred from
Lamar
Junior
College, where he
was selected as a
2003 NJCAA firstteam All-American.
“Andy was one
of the finest junior
Senior Matt Tribble
college hitters in the
country a year ago,” Price said. “I expect Andy to hit in the three-hole and contribute as a quality hitter for us.”
Patrolling center field will be junior J.C. Sibley, a native of Henderson, Nev.
Sibley helped Southern Nevada Community College wrap up the 2003 NJCAA
National Championship by hitting .327 and stealing 18 bases.
“J.C. played for one of the top junior college programs in the country,” Price
said. “We expect J.C. to be our leadoff hitter and be one of the top defensive
outfielders in the Big 12.”
Freshman Derek Bailey will also look for playing time, as he returns after taking a redshirt in the 2003 season, and sophomore A.J. Van Slyke, son of
Pittsburgh Pirate great Andy Van Slyke, will also help shore up needs in the KU
lineup.
Schedule
After recording the third-most wins in school history a year ago, Ritch Price
and his staff have put together a schedule that is sure to prepare Kansas for the
next step of earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The ‘Hawks will start
the season in the same fashion as last year with a trip to the big island of Hawaii
and a seven-game set with the Vulcans of Hawaii-Hilo. After two trips to Texas
in early February, Kansas will travel to Stanford, Calif., to take on the 2003
national runners-up, the Stanford Cardinal.
“In my opinion, this is the toughest schedule in the history of Jayhawk baseball,” Price said. “This schedule is designed to prepare our club for the competitiveness of the Big 12 Conference.”
The Jayhawks open their home schedule on Feb. 21, when they host the
Creighton Blue Jays at Hoglund Ballpark, and will not make another road trip
until March 16 when they play at Oral Roberts. KU opens Big 12 Conference
play on March 26 at defending conference champion Nebraska’s Haymarket
Park. The ‘Hawks return to Hoglund Ballpark for their first home Big 12 series
on April 2 against the Oklahoma Sooners. Big 12 opponents set to make trips
to Lawrence include Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Border War rival Missouri, as
well as Kansas State. KU will travel to Oklahoma State, Baylor and Texas and
also play two of three at K-State. The Big 12 Tournament will begin on
Wednesday, May 26, at The Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, home of the Texas
Rangers.
“If we can accomplish our goal of 35 wins during the 2004 season, our RPI
will be high enough to gain a berth in the NCAA Championships,” Price added.
