October 13, 2013 - St. Mary Immaculate Conception

October 13, 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time ◊ Reflection on today’s readings ...
The leper who was cured and thanked Jesus "glorified God in a loud voice" (Luke 17:15).
What miracles do we see that help us grow in faith? When we ask and pray for help we
give God the chance to act through others to give us support. We can spend our whole life
thinking that we are Christian, but if we never express that faith, it will just be theory.

The Word of God Unchained
There is no chaining the word of God! But how many times do we attempt to do that very thing?
Had the followers of Jesus or the teachers of the law or the Pharisees been asked if the lepers should be
cleansed or healed, the answer would most likely have been, "No, they deserve their condition."
The lepers would have been, perhaps, a mixed group, Galileans and Samaritans alike, the bond of
their awful disease overcoming the pettiness of former religious bickering. Jesus' actions once again
illustrate his vocation and ours: to reach out when healing is needed, to challenge when conversion is
needed, to console when comfort is needed. He also follows his own advice from last week's Gospel: do
what you have been commanded to do. When the cleansed Samaritan has returned to give thanks, Jesus
does not take it as an opportunity for self-aggrandizement, but rather offers insight into faith.

Are you still wondering what those "spots" are that
circles our church? All parishioners, families and
friends are invited and encouraged to join us
every Sunday at 11:20 am to walk and pray our
OUTDOOR ROSARY. During October, we can
gather together to honor Our Blessed Mother and
console Her Immaculate Heart by praying the Rosary (with our intentions to pray for an end to abortion; for grace and protection for our children and
families; for priests and an increase in vocations, for
our parish, and for the intentions that we hold in the
silence of our hearts). We will gather in the front of
the church each Sunday, at 11:20 am, beginning October 6th. All ages welcome. Free Rosaries
and pamphlets "How to Pray the Rosary" will be provided. Call Susan Malestic, OCDS at 262-7236032 with any questions. Please join us in transforming those "spots" into powerful grace!
