All clubs will be responsible for numbering their own exhibits and the members for numbering themselves
when necessary. Numbers must be firmly attached.
Current membership cards must be shown to the Stewards by the Competitor before each class. All
membership numbers must be written next to the person named on the entry sheet in the Industrial
Section.
In each class, the judge’s decision is final.

CLASS 1 – STOCKJUDGING - Thursday 23 May 2013 at 7.30pm by kind permission of the
Brough Family at Buckabank Farm, Dalston, Carlisle
No stockjudging cards will be given out to competitors after the judging has started. Competitors will only
be allowed to communicate with the Judges and Stewards during the judging. Once a placing card has
been handed to the judge, it may NOT be returned. Failure to adhere to the rules will lead to
disqualification. White coats must be worn by all competitors. General stockjudging rules (except
linear assessment): Inspection time = 15 minutes including handling. Reasons = 2 minutes. Time faults of
2 points per 15 seconds or part thereof. PARENTS, ADVISORY & HELPERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED

CLASS 2 – TRACTOR HANDLING (NAFD)

Competitors to be over 16 years old and hold a current tractor/car licence to be shown to the

CLASS 3 – FARM PLANNING
a)
Farm Planning Exercise – Open – One member to complete an exercise and present to the judge on
the Field Day. A 5 minute verbal dissertation followed by 5 minutes of questions. Paper to be
handed into County Office by 4pm or at Council on Thursday 9 May 2013.
b)
Mock Auction – One member to value items you may expect to see at a farm sale. To be held on
Wednesday 15 May 2013 at 7.30pm by kind permission of the Pollock Family at Wreay
Hall Farm, Wreay, Carlisle.
c)
Auctioneering – Open – One member to auction an item randomly selected on the Field Day. Items
will be selected by drawing a lot number.
CLASS 4 – SHEEP SHEARING (NAFD)
a)
Machine – Open – Team of 2. One competitor is to shear two sheep and the other competitor is to
wrap the two fleeces. Competitors to bring their own hand piece, combs and cutters. Competitor
must have a CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE. Eliminator to be held on Tuesday 21 May
2013 at 7.00pm PROMPT by kind permission of the Hetherington Family at
Greenquarries, Rosley. Top 4 teams to re-compete at the Field Day.
b)
Hand – Open – One member is required to shear one sheep and wrap the fleece. Competitor is
required to bring their own shears. Competitor must have a CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE.
To be done at the Field Day – no eliminator.
CLASS 5 – GENERAL ANIMAL HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE
Open – One member to complete a multiple choice questionnaire on the day (approx 20 questions).
CLASS 6 – SKILLS
a)
Junior – Design an A4 poster to advertise a British Tea Party. Freehand only and no accessories
allowed. Paper will be provided but competitors to bring own equipment e.g. pens and pencils.
Maximum time 30 minutes.
b)
Intermediate – Competitor is to gift wrap a wine bottle. Bottle will be provided. Competitor to
bring own wrap and equipment. Maximum time 30 minutes.
c)
Senior – Decorate an 8” ceramic plate to incorporate a British Landmark. Freehand only and no
accessories allowed. Plate will be provided but competitor to bring own materials. Maximum time
30 minutes
CLASS 7 – PALLET CHALLENGE (NAFD)
Team of 2 – (1 intermediate & 1 senior). Each team will be supplied with 2 pallets which they are to
dismantle and make into an item which will be revealed on the day. The majority of the wood should be
used in the construction. No staining, no painting, NO FINISH allowed. No power/battery tools, chainsaws
or nail guns allowed. You must bring your own tools and nails. Maximum time 1 hour. Safety clothing
must be worn – STEEL TOE CAP BOOTS, GLOVES AND GOGGLES.

CLASS 8 – CLUB EXHIBIT THEME “Best of British” (NFYFC & NAFD)
Each exhibit to depict the theme of “Best of British” and to include any 5 craft items related to the theme.
The craft items should complement each other and be clearly marked (1-5). The exhibit must have 3
walls. Each whole exhibit to have a maximum width of 1 metre at any given point, a maximum depth of 1
metre and maximum height of 1 metre. Any exhibit exceeding the maximum measurements will be
disqualified. The measurements will be taken from outside.
The 5 items will be judged individually and then on attractiveness, originality and ingenuity and relevance
to the theme.
PARENTS, ADVISORY AND HELPERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HELP COMPETITIORS TO SET THE
EXHIBIT UP
CLASS 9 – FLORAL ART – OPEN (NAFD)
Competitors are to create a Floral Exhibit to the theme of “Vintage Kitchen”. Must incorporate a vintage
kitchen utensil. To be judged from the front only. Table space allowed 75cm wide x 60 cm deep x
unlimited height. Pre cut and pre soaked oasis allowed. All the work of arranging and assembling the
materials must be carried out during the competition. Competitors must wear white coats. No pre cut
flowers. Maximum time 1 hour with a further 10 minutes to check that arrangements have not been
disturbed during clearing up.
CLASS 10 – FLORAL ART – THEME “The Best of British” (NFYFC)
FLOWERS MUST NOT BE PRE-CUT BEFORE THE COMPETITION. 20% OF MARKS WILL BE
DEDUCTED IF IN THE JUDGES OPINION THE FLOWERS HAVE BEEN PRE-CUT.
Table space allowed 75cm wide x 60cm deep x unlimited height. All the work assembling and arranging
the materials must be carried out on the day. Competitors must wear white coats. Maximum time allowed
1 hour with a further 10 minutes to check that the arrangements have not been disturbed during clean up.
Accessories are allowed to complement the theme.

CLASS 11 – COOKERY AND COOKERY QUESTIONNAIRE – Theme “The Best of British” (NFYFC)
Team of 3 members (1 junior, 1 intermediate & 1 senior) to prepare and display four dishes for a British
Farming Awards Dinner to the theme “The Best of British Cuisine” to include a least one sweet and one
savoury dish. Each dish will be required to serve two people. Two butane gas stoves are allowed – to be
supplied by the competitors. No other heat is allowed and electricity is not available. Competitors to
provide all ingredients (these may be brought to the competition already weighed out and vegetables
ready washed). Maximum display size 90cm (width) x 60cm (depth). Menu card, details of recipes and
costings and nutrient card must be displayed. Recipes must be available throughout the practical session.
Maximum time 1 hour to include preparation and tidying of the site. Display boards may be set up outside
the hour. Cookery questionnaire may be completed outside the time scale. Competitors must wear white
coats and hair nets / hats. PARENTS, ADVISORY AND HELPERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HELP
COMPETITIORS TO SET THE EXHIBIT UP
CLASS 12 – WALLPAPER CHALLENGE
Team of 2 (1 intermediate & 1 senior – one male & one female) will have 30 minutes to complete a wall
papering task. Wall will include three obstacles which may be a door, window, light switch, skirting
boards, corner or rail. Teams will be judged on skill, neatness and ability to complete task in time. Wall
paper and paste provided. Competitors to bring own equipment

CLASS 13 – MINI DIGGER CHALLENGE (NAFD)
One member aged 17 years or over (on 1 Sept 12) will be required to operate a mini digger as instructed
by the judge. Please note the mini digger will remain stationary – only the boom arm will be operated by
the competitor for the tasks. Competitor must have a full driving licence which is to be shown on the day.
CLASS 14 – CUMBERLAND AND WESTMORLAND WRESTLING
Certificate of attendance (completed and signed prior to the Field Day) to be shown on the day in order to
compete – this includes experienced competitors.

CLASS 19 – BALE STOOK – OPEN (NAFD)
Team of 2 members to stack 17 small square bales by hand. Formation will be provided on the day. It will
be judged on time, neatness, accuracy and safety.
CLASS 20 – ADVISORY RACE “GREAT BRITISH ICONS”
Team of 2 Advisory or Club Leaders to dress up to the theme “Great British Icons”. 50% of marks for the
fancy dress and 50% for the race. Race to be completed in full fancy dress.

CLASS 21 – OBSTACLE RACE “1950’s STYLE” (NAFD)
Team of 6 (2 juniors, 2 intermediates & 2 seniors – at least 2 of each sex) will be required to complete an
obstacle course. For the Northern District Field Day the race is to be completed in fancy dress to the
theme 1950’s.
CLASS 22 – CUMBERLAND DIALECT COMPETITION - OPEN
One member to write a story in dialect entitled “A Day at t’ Hunt”. Story to be between 170 and 230
words. To be handed into County Office by 4pm or at Council on Thursday 9 May 2013. To be
performed at the Field Day by the member who wrote it.
CLASS 23 – JUNIOR NATURE CHALLENGE
Team of 2 juniors (1 male & 1 female) – one member is to follow a country trail, obeying the country code
and answer questions at various points. The other member is to identify 6 wild flowers and complete a
questionnaire. Maximum of 15 minutes.
CLASS 24 – SWING DANCE (NAFD)
A minimum of 4 and maximum team of 10 competitors allowed. One from each sex. At least 2 juniors and
at least 2 competitors must be 21 years of age or over on 1st September 2012. Members are to perform a
routine to a song of their choice on the day to the theme ‘SWING DANCING’. Members must remember
that they will be performing in front of a family audience. Performance area allowed 10 metres wide by 10
metres deep. Members are to provide the music on a backing CD. A PA system will be available to use on
the day. CD’s must be labeled and are to be given to the steward on booking in. Maximum time 5
minutes.
CLASS 25 – 1950’s KARAOKE COMPETITION – OPEN (NAFD)
Maximum of 5 competitors to sing a song of their choice from the 1950’s from the collection on the night.
Equipment will be supplied. Members to perform in stockjudging draw order. To be held at Caldbeck
Village Hall on Friday 10 May 2013, 7.30pm.
CLASS 26 – LIVE DEMONSTRATION ONE MAN AND HIS DOG
Team of 2 (1 male & 1 female) 1 the farmer & 1 the dog. Competitors to complete a course within set
time. Judged on appropriate outfits, correct commands and time. Minimum time 5 minutes. Maximum 10
minutes.
CLASS 27 – GENERATION GAME
Team of 2 (1 male & 1 female). One member must be under the age of 21 years & 1 member over 21
years old. Competitors will be asked to copy a task/skill on the day.
CLASS 28 – EGG YOKING - OPEN
Team of 2 members. Throw eggs over a barrier backwards and forwards to the other team member who
you will not be able to see. Marked on number of safe catches using a maximum of 3 eggs in 2 minutes.
CLASS 29 – HAIR STYLE - OPEN
A male competitor is to create a hairstyle for a female member or club leader to attend a “Queens Dinner
Party.” Competitors must bring and use their own equipment. No electrical/gas equipment allowed.
Maximum of 30 minutes.
CLASS 30 – JUNIOR SUPERSTARS
Team of four juniors to complete a set of mini tasks set on the day.

CLASS 31 – BOAT RACE (NAFD)
Team of 6 members to include at least 2 of each sex aged 18 years and over on the day. Competitors to
be judged on time taken to drink 6 alcoholic mystery pints (one per team member only). Points will be
deducted for any spillages. Members to perform in stockjudging draw order. To be held at Caldbeck
Village Hall on Friday 10 May 2013, 7.30pm.
CLASS 32 – NON ALCOHOLIC BOAT RACE
Team of 6 members aged 17 years and under (at least 2 of each sex). Each member of the team will be
required to consume 1 pint from a selection of 6 different non alcoholic drinks. The drinks will be
consumed consecutively. Teams will be timed from the first person starting their drink until the last person
has consumed all their drink. Points will be deducted for any spillages.
CLASS 33 – YARD / HALF OF ALE (NAFD)
The competitor must be 18 years of age or over on 1st September 2012. Members to perform in
stockjudging draw order. To be held at Caldbeck Village Hall on Friday 10 May 2013, 7.30pm.

CLASS 34 – EATING COMPETITION – OPEN (NAFD)

CLASS 35 – 1950’S TOOL IDENTIFICATION – OPEN (NAFD)
One competitor will be required to identify a number of tools from the 1950’s and what they would have
been used for. Scored on number of correctly identified tools and uses.
CLASS 36 – MAKE AND MODEL (NAFD)
a)
Open Male Fashion - Milk Maid from 1950’s
Competitors will be required to make an outfit suitable for a milk maid from the 1950’s and bring to the
Field Day and display it in the Industrial Section. This item will then need to be modelled by the person
who made the outfit in the fashion show later in the day. Old items of clothing can be used and modified.
b)
Open Female Fashion - Musical Icon from 1950’s
Competitors will be required to make an outfit suitable for a musical icon from the 1950’s and bring to the
Field Day and display it in the Industrial Section. This item will then need to be modelled by the person
who made the outfit in the fashion show later in the day. Old items of clothing can be used and modified.
CLASS 37 – TREASURERS COMPETITION
Club Treasurer to bring rough notebook of transactions, cashbook, invoices, cheque book, paying in book
and bank statements to the last one issued. Judge to examine books, followed by a short interview.
Maximum time 15 minutes.
INDUSTRIAL SECTION
CLASS 38 – MINUTES BOOK
Club secretary to exhibit the minutes book for the year from September 2011 to August 2012. Minutes
must be typed and presented in a folder. To be handed into County Office by 4pm or at Council on
Thursday 9 May 2013.
CLASS 39 – SCRAPBOOK
Club scrapbook for the year from Field Day 2012 to Field Day 2013. To be handed into County Office
by 4pm or at Council on Thursday 9 May 2013.

CLASS 40 – DECORATED CAKE TO CELEBRATE THE CORONATION – OPEN (NAFD)
Competitors are to exhibit an iced cake – to the theme ‘Coronation’. This is your interpretation. A dummy
cake can be used. Only royal icing is accepted. Only edible Homemade Accessories and ribbon are
allowed. An A3 photo board evidence of competitor icing the cake and if applicable making edible
homemade accessories must be displayed (face can be shown). Wire fixings allowed but must not be
visible. The cake including the board is to fit in an area 30cm x 30cm with unlimited height. Tiers allowed.
Photo board is in addition to the size allowed.
CLASS 41 – ONE ROUND OF SHORTBREAD – JUNIOR (NAFD)
Junior competitor is required to exhibit a whole round of shortbread. To be displayed within 30cm x 30cm.
A5 recipe & method card must be displayed within the area allowed.
CLASS 42 – 4 SQUARES OF GINGERBREAD – OPEN
To be displayed on a doily
CLASS 43 – PLAITED LOAF OF BREAD – OPEN
Plaited loaf of bread made from Carr’s flour. Carr’s flour bag to be displayed.
CLASS 44 – 4 GRIDDLE SCONES – OPEN (NAFD)
Competitors are required to exhibit four griddle scones. To be displayed within 30cm x 30cm. A5 recipe
card must be displayed within the area allowed.
CLASS 45 – JAR OF CHUTNEY – JUNIOR (NAFD)
Competitors are required to exhibit one jar of chutney. A5 recipe & method card must be displayed
CLASS 46 – JAR OF RASPBERRY JAM – INTERMEDIATE (NAFD)
Competitors are required to exhibit one jar of raspberry jam. A5 recipe & method card must be displayed.
CLASS 47 – JAR OF LEMON CURD – SENIOR (NAFD)
Competitors are required to exhibit one jar of lemon curd. A5 recipe & method card must be displayed.
CLASS 48 – AFTERNOON TEA – 1950’s STYLE – OPEN (NAFD)
Competitor is required to present an afternoon tea to the theme 1950’s. To be staged in an area of 60cm
x 60cm x 60cm. Must include the following:

A selection of finger sandwiches
Traditional Flan - Savoury


Homemade Coffee & Walnut Cake

Presentation up to individual competitor but must be displayed within the above area
CLASS 49 – 4 DYED EGGS – JUNIOR (NAFD)
Competitors are required to dye four eggs with onion peel however no artificial dye to be used. To be
displayed on a saucer.
CLASS 50 – MALE BACON AND EGG PIE (NAFD)
Competitors are required to present a 10” bacon & egg pie. Presentation up to the individual competitor.
A5 recipe card must be displayed.

CLASS 51 – MINATURE BRITISH LANDMARK ON A BISCUIT TIN LID – JUNIOR
Competitors are required to create a miniature British Landmark of their choice on a biscuit tin lid using
any materials. Maximum size 30cm x 30cm.
CLASS 52 – DESIGN CLUB VIDEO – JUNIOR (NFYFC)
Maximum team of 4 juniors. Competitors are required to produce a video clip to promote their club,
county and national federation. The video should be no longer than 4 minutes. A storyboard of between
six and nine frames should also be submitted which details the production process of the video. This
should be a maximum of two sides of A4. To be handed into County Office by 4pm or at Council on
Thursday 9 May 2013.
CLASS 53 – DESIGN A CHRISTMAS CARD – OPEN (NFYFC)
Competitors will be required to submit a maximum of one Christmas Card to the theme “The Best of British
to celebrate Christmas”, in two dimensional format, to be reproduced in any card size up to a maximum of
15cm x 20cm (6” x 8”). No computerised graphics or professional cards to be used and readymade cards
are not acceptable. The card should be flat and mounted on a suitable backing with the border being no
more than 2.5cm (1”).
CLASS 54 – DESIGN A PHOTOGRAPHY TWELVE MONTH CALENDAR – OPEN (NFYFC & NAFD)
Competitors will be required to produce one photograph for each of the following categories depicting the
theme “Best of British”:

Each photograph should be no bigger than 12.5cm x 17cm (5” x 7”). Do not mount the photos.
Please bring to Council on Thursday 9 May. They are to be inserted into a plastic wallet. One file per
category. Photos are to be inserted into the correct wallet (stockjudging number order) in the correct files
for the category.
CLASS 55 – KNITTED GARMENT – OPEN (NFYFC)
Note: Only Part 1 of NFYFC Rules is required for Northern District Field Day
Competitors will be required to knit and makeup a garment using British yarn which should be
predominantly wool (a yarn to consist of 50% or more British wool). The garment may be accessorised.
Space allowed will be 60cm x 60cm x 60cm. The following information must be displayed with the
garment:




Label from the yarn which displays the origin of the yarn and its composition (50% or more British
wool)
A copy of the pattern used
Receipts for yarn(s)
Summary of costs
CLASS 56 – CROSS STITCH PICTURE OF 1950’s – JUNIOR (NAFD)
Competitor is required to make a cross stitch picture depicting the 1950’s. It must be displayed within
40cm x 40cm size limit in cross stitch frame so it can be viewed from both sides.

CLASS 57 – WOODWORK 1 PAIR OF BOOKENDS – JUNIOR (NAFD)
Competitor will be required to make a pair of wooden bookends. No staining, no painting, no oiling, NO
FINISH allowed. Competitors must include an A3 storyboard detailing how it was made with illustrated
photographs (competitors face can be shown). The pair of completed bookends should be no more than
30cm x 30cm in total and can have unlimited depth. Storyboard to be displayed in addition to this size
area.
CLASS 58 – WOODEN TOY FROM THE 1950’s – INTERMEDIATE (NAFD)
Competitor will be required to make a wooden toy suitable for a child in the 1950’s. No staining, no
painting, NO FINISH allowed. Competitors must include an A3 storyboard detailing how it was made with
illustrated photographs (competitors face can be shown). The completed toy should be no more than
30cm x 30cm and can have unlimited height. Storyboard to be displayed in addition to this size area.
CLASS 59 – HAY RAKE – SENIOR (NAFD)
Competitor will be required to make a hay rake to be displayed. No staining, no painting, NO FINISH

CLASS 60 – METALWORK – FARM SIGN – SENIOR (NAFD)
Competitor will be required to make a farm sign completely from metal. Paint only as a finish.
Competitors must include an A3 storyboard detailing how it was made and illustrated with photographs
(face of competitor can be shown). The completed farm sign should be no more than 1mx1mx1m.

CLASS 61 – CLUB YEARBOOK REPORT – OPEN
Typed club yearbook report along with a CD copy. To be no more than 300 words and must include a
photo in jpeg format. Report and photo will not to be judged. Points awarded for entry however points
will be deducted if CD copy not provided on the day.
