February is Library Lovers’ Month! February 2013 Editor: Tiffany Haight “Library Lovers' Month is a month-long celebration of school, public, and private libraries of all types. This is a time for everyone, especially library support groups, to recognize the value of libraries and to work to assure that the Nation's libraries will continue to serve.”— http://www.librarysupport.net/librarylovers/ How to Love Your Library CONTRIBUTE (Many libraries have memorial programs, endowments and Library Lingo SHELBY AREA DISTRICT LIBRARY other opportunities to support quality library services). You just have to talk about your library. Here are some ways to do it: *Support library referenda in elections. *Write to your state and federal legislators and demand that library service be viewed (and funded) as a necessary public service. *Write a letter to the editor or call in to a radio talk station to express your concerns. Many people are not aware of the funding problems libraries are experiencing nationally—or in their own communities. —http://www.librarysupport.net/librarylovers/ Like us on Facebook! “I have often thought that nothing would do more extensive good at small expense than the establishment of a small circulating library in every county, to consist of a few well-chosen books, to be lent to the people of the country under regulations as would secure their safe return in due time.” —Thomas Jefferson February 2013 Monday Sunday Tuesday Thursday Wednesday Friday Saturday n 3 4 5 1 2 6 7 8 9 13 14 15 16 20 21 22 23 27 28 Storytime 10:15am 10 11 12 Storytime 10:15am Friends Meeting 5pm 17 18 19 Storytime 10:15am 24 25 26 Library Board Meeting 5pm Budget Hearing 5:15pm Storytime 10:15am Library Hours Mondays through Thursdays 9am-7pm Fridays 9am-5pm Saturdays 9am-1pm Lines From Leon for January 2013 Projects and Dates for the Year At our Friends meeting held on January 9, we reviewed the projects and schedules for the upcoming year. We start with a very important date for all of you who participate in the Little Chair-ity event. The Chair Pickup date is set for Saturday March 16, from 9-11 AM. Cindy McKinnon and I will be there to meet those of you picking up a chair during that time. We look forward to seeing many of you again this year as we begin this important fund raiser. The other dates for this event are Saturday June 11, 9-11 AM, Meet and Greet the Artists as chairs are dropped off. Chairs will be on display until Saturday July 13 when we'll read Silent Auction bids at 11AM. As all of you know, this has become another of the main support events for the Friends efforts to help the library. Pet Photo contest. We're pleased that Barb Hopper will be managing this event again this year. You will recall the many great photos we had last year that made this a fun event, and a very successful one too. Photos are due in to the library by Friday April 12. Barb will have displays up ready for your 25 cent votes beginning on Tuesday April 16. We'll end the contest on Wednesday May 8. We have our usual Friends meeting that day, and will announce the results in the newsletter. We'll have many of the same kinds of votes by the group, including “funniest”, “smallest”, “largest”, “most unusual” etc. Good luck with your entry. Next up is our Annual Book Sale. As usual, we'll be holding this event on Saturday, August 10, from 9 AM until 1 PM. We'll be at the library accepting your donations of books, puzzles, board games and other media on Friday August 9. I can't help but mention again that the results are dependent on your donations. The better the selection we have, the more support for the library. We, of course, will be asking for help as we get closer in order to set it up and manage it on that Friday and Saturday. Time to go through your library at home to see what you could perhaps donate to this sale. One of the items I forgot to mention in my recap of the year in December was the success of our first ever plant exchange in June. We'll be holding another of these this year. Dates to be announced. Another area of discussion we had at our meeting is a possible change to our membership requirements for the Friends group. You will hear more about this as we make those decisions. I expect that after our February meeting, we'll be ready to announce the changes. I also should announce that our Friends group has re-elected the same board to represent you. I'll be serving another year as Chair, Kathy Fox will be our Treasurer, and Paula Ballast will be our Secretary. We appreciate the confidence the group continues to show in the board as we all work for the same goal of helping provide the best library for our community we can. Well, if you haven't caught this season's cold yet consider yourself lucky. Paula and I have both had it and are getting to the recovery stage. We’re trying to avoid each other, friends and family as much as possible to not pass the germs, but that doesn’t always work so well. Stay warm, read a good book, and show us some snow. We'll bring you up to date again next month.
