HEADQUARTERS SOUTH BENGAL FRONTIER BSF KOLKATA // PRESS RELEASE // Reference No : 03/2017 Dated : 18-01-2017 BSF HANDED OVER 10 COCKATOO BIRD (AUSTRALIAN) TO ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN, ALIPORE, KOLKATA SEIZED IN THE BORDER AREA OF BORDER OUTPOST MALUAPARA EX 113 BN BSF UNDER KRISHNANAGAR SECTOR BSF DISTRICT NADIA. 1. Keeping in view the vulnerability of Border from smuggling point of view Shri P S R Anjaneyulu, IPS, Inspector General BSF South Bengal Frontier has issued operational guidelines to further strengthen Border domination so as to effectively check the menace of smuggling and other activities of Anti National Elements on South Bengal Border with Bangladesh. Accordingly field Commanders have been ensuring implementation of these instructions to maintain extra vigil on border to thwart the attempts of smugglers / Anti -National Elements. Tactical operations are being mounted to foil the attempts of the smugglers. 2. On 16th Jan’ 2017, a specific information was received by BSF regarding smuggling of COCKATOO bird (Australian) near Border Outpost Maluapara ex113 Bn BSF under Police Station Bhimpur, Distt-Nadia. On receiving the information, at about 1720 hrs, a Spl Operation was planned and launched by troops of Border Outpost Maluapara Ex-113 Bn BSF in border village Hudapara. The party observed that two unknown persons along with head load coming from Bangladesh side and 2 miscreants coming from Indian village Hudapara and moving towards village Maluapara. Special patrolling party challenged them to stop but both the miscreants threw head load and ran away towards village Hudapara. On search of the area, 10 Cockatoo (Australian) were recovered from the spot. Since the birds are exotic and could not have survived in wild, the BSF party in consultation with Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Kolkata handed over these birds to Zoological Garden, Alipore. 3. It is worth noting that a cockatoo is a parrot that is one of the 21 species belonging to the bird family Cacatuidae, the only family in the super family Cacatuoidea. The family has a mainly Australasian distribution, ranging from the Philippines and the eastern Indonesian islands of Wallacea to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Australia. Cockatoos are recognisable by the showy crests and curved bills. Their plumage is generally less colourful than that of other parrots, being mainly white, grey or black and often with coloured features in the crest, cheeks or tail. 4.
