Long Forgotten Plane Crash
BY: Frances P-‐G and Solveig J
It was 1950, and a blinding snowstorm was at hand. NWA flight 307 had been on a flight past Minneapolis, but was trying to make an emergency landing at the Minneapolis airport. It clipped its left wing on a flagpole. The plane had missed the landing spot the first time and was circling in for another attempt but clipped its left wing on a 70-‐foot flagpole at Fort Snelling cemetery. The wing fully detached later on at the Washburn Water Tower.
The plane could no longer fly now and plummeted towards the ground. It crashed into the Doughty residence on the 1000 block of Minnehaha Parkway. It exploded, setting fire to the house and severely damaging the houses to either side of it. All of the passengers, three crewmembers, the captain, and Tommy and Janet Doughty, ages 8 and 10, were killed. The two children had just gone upstairs to go to bed when the fireball hit. Older sister Dianne Doughty age 15 had quickly popped upstairs to put her pajamas on then hurried back down to watch the game with her parents. As soon as it hit their first reaction was to save herself so her and her parents did the first thing they could think to do, jump out the sunroom window. Unfortunately, Tommy and Janet were trapped upstairs in a wall of fire. Neighbors tried to save the children by giving them a ladder, but the ladder was burned to smitherines, and the children perished. Ms. Doughty lay in the snow injured saying "My babies! My babies! Someone save them!"
A man running to the scene was reported dead. He had died of a heart attack, though he was in his 70-‐80s.
Later, in 2013, a memorial was built (shown below) across the street from where the plane crashed giving a short explanation of what happened and lists the names of the people who died that night. Dates and times: Tuesday, March 7, 1950, 9:02pm
