Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic 2014 annual report 19942014 celebrating 20 years of service. our board chair The Clinic’s 20th year couldn’t be a more exciting time! As I reflect on the Clinic’s amazing history and meaningful impact on our community, I’m reminded of all that has changed in our world, this community, and within the Clinic. What began as a simple call to service is now a thriving free legal clinic and pillar of strength and hope in our community. Our location has changed, legal service and education offerings expanded, new friends and partnerships identified but what has remained unchanged is the inspired and inspiring work that occurs each and every day at the Clinic. As you already know, the community’s need for legal services has only grown as our community continues to Serving the civil legal needs of Indiana’s most vulnerable neighbors since 1994. grow. Our commitment to meeting these needs is unwavering and YOU are essential to this critical cause. Thank you for your support of the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic and here’s to another 20 blessed years! Jenifer Brown Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic Board Chair Ice Miller LLP: Indianapolis the call: About 700 years before Christ, the prophet Isaiah encouraged God’s people to: “Seek justice, defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” During the year, 4,034 people attended one of our neighborhood-based Isaiah 1:17 intakes seeking legal counsel and representation. We seek our marginalized neighbors, assisting them in alleviating burdens so they can thrive. We build programs around vulnerable clients, provide justiceoriented advocacy and legal solutions, and partner with other high-impact nonprofits and ministries so that clients receive holistic services. Consumer Justice Program programs at a glance: 4,330 people participated in a preventive legal education seminar, learning At the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, we take this prophetic call seriously. Immigrant Justice Program Project GRACE Project PEACE Victim Justice Program Whether there has been a loss of employment, divorce/separation, or unexpected health expenses, we help protect clients' income and provide a fresh financial start. Our Helping Hoosier Homeowners program provides a full range of postpurchase housing counseling and mortgage foreclosure prevention services. The Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic assists taxpayers who have a dispute with the IRS. And our consumer attorneys assist with bankruptcy. Clients served in our Immigrant Justice Program include asylees fleeing brutal regimes, refugees seeking to start a new life here, and children who were brought to the U.S. at a young age. We seek to help our immigrant clients fully integrate into the U.S., which includes seeking the authority to work. Project GRACE (Guided Re-entry Assistance and Community Education) works with ex-offenders, helping to remove barriers to successful re-entry. Services include limiting access to criminal histories, restoring driving privileges, and assistance with child support and visitation issues. The goal of Project PEACE (Peaceful Engagement And Conflict Education) is to provide an alternative to contentious litigation for family law disputes. Rather than "lawyering up" to deal with custody, parenting time, and child support, we encourage collaborative co-parenting relationships, and a lawyer/mediator who ensures agreements reached are legally sound and in the children's best interests. Partnering with agencies such as The Julian Center, and Families First, we provide critically-needed legal services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault that will help victims secure immediate safety and long-term well-being. about their legal rights and responsibilities. Top five countries of birth for refugee clients: Burma, Eritrea, Iraq, Egypt, and Somalia. 1,998 people attended our expungement help desk at the City-County Building (the first such help desk in the state) where they were guided through the step-by-step process of how to clear their criminal records. 187 people attended educational seminars to learn about the new Indiana expungement law, how to reinstate a driver’s license, and information regarding child support concerns. 67 people attended conflict education workshops, which prepare families for mediation and also empower them to handle conflict. 22 mediations were completed, each lasting 6-8 hours, serving a total of 139 people, including children. 67% of mediation cases included families with children. 129 victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking received representation in a family law matter against their abusers. 87 immigrants who were victims of violent crime had U-Visas filed which, when approved, will provide them with work authorization and legal status in the United States. a lasting legacy The prophet Isaiah spoke strongly about the role of rebuilders in their communities: “Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings” (Isaiah 58:12). This is our passion at the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic – to repair and restore our community by providing accessible justice to the marginalized in our city. On October 28, 2014, the legal, nonprofit, and ministry communities came together to shine a light on the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic, honor its founders, and celebrate 20 years of service to the community. The evening crescendoed when guests took to their feet, honoring Clinic founders Abigail Kuzma, Lynn Tyler, Jeffrey Pankratz, Dan Schroeder, Tom Strodtman, and Chuck Gleason, for their role in laying the foundation for the work we’re continuing today and the years ahead. 7% management 5% fundraising and general expenses: financial statement & notes Program Services Management and General Fundraising 88% program services SUPPORT & REVENUE Unrestricted Temporarily Restricted Permanently Restricted 2014 Total 2013 Total Contributions 185,402 897,662 0 1,083,064 1,211,080 Program service fee income 963,885 0 0 963,885 928,148 Donated services 463,207 0 0 463,207 416,669 62,097 0 0 62,097 55,085 Net revenues from special events Other revenue 38% net assets support & revenue: released from restrictions 7% contributions Contributions Program service fee income Event Revenue 36% contract for revenue service Other income revenue 6,372 0 10,795 7,970 1,040,531 (1,040,531) 0 0 0 Total support and revenue 2,719,545 (136,497) 0 2,583,048 2,611,382 Unrestricted Temporarily Restricted 0 0 0 0 Permanently Restricted 0 0 0 0 2014 Total 2013 Total 2,228,298 193,004 118,783 2,540,085 2,121,681 186,595 67,886 2,376,162 Unrestricted Temporarily Restricted Permanently Restricted 2014 Total 2013 Total Net assets, beginning of year 775,665 371,804 12,833 1,160,302 925,082 Net assets, end of year 955,125 235,307 12,833 1,203,265 1,160,302 Change in net assets 179,460 (136,497) 0 42,963 235,220 EXPENSES Donated Services 2% event 4,423 Net assets released from restrictions net assets released from restrictions 17% donated services Program Services Management and general Fundraising Total Expenses ASSETS 2,228,298 193,004 118,783 2,540,085 These consolidated financial statements are compiled from our complete 2014 financial statements, which are prepared and audited by Yount and Company, LLC.
