Faculty & Staff Interact Over Tea
Vice Chancellor Dr. Timothy Wachira (right) interacting with staff during the VC’s Tea in Athi River campus
The University Vice-chancellor, Dr. Timothy Wachira hosted members
of faculty and staff to a high tea at the Athi River Campus on Friday
February 10, 2017. An array of sandwiches, chicken lollipop,
assorted cakes, samosas, fruit platter, juice and tea were all laid out
for the people present to enjoy as they mingled with one another.
The VC listed some of the milestones achieved by the University
in 2016 as, the inauguration of the new University Chancellor Prof.
Mary Murimi; the appointment of the Council Chair Dr. George
Krhoda; completion of the 5-year Strategic Plan – 2016-2021 and;
the first ever December graduation, among other activities.
In his usual jovial mood, the master of ceremonies Mr. Thomas
Koyier welcomed the faculty and staff, and encouraged them to
mingle and get to know at least five new people they did not know
before.
He further revealed the major activities for the year 2017 among
them being:
Speaking to his guests, the Vice Chancellor Dr. Timothy Wachira
began by thanking God for a successful 2016. He pointed out that
interacting over tea is a statement that we are a family. “By being
together we are accepting that we all have a calling here at Daystar
and a common course to serve God together,” he said as he called
on everyone to continue to be faithful to God as they carry out their
duties.
• Inspection of the Unversity by the Commission for University
Education (CUE) in June. Inspections are carried out every
5 years. (He requested everyone to be cooperative in
providing the required information).
• Launching of the Law programme which is currently at the
final stages of putting together the requirements listed by
CUE.

• Get all students and staff information into a biometric data
system.
• Construction of a parking silo in Nairobi Campus to
accommodate approximately 400 cars; set to start end of
2017 or early 2018.
• Constructionion of a water dam in Athi River Campus, set to
begin by the end of February or early March.
• Provision of a gymnasium for the students to be done and
completed within the year.
Reacting to the challenges of the draught in the country, the
VC called on the faculty and staff to stand with those affected. He
revealed that the Senate has put together a committee to work our
modalities of how Daystar can respond to the draught situation in the
country. Dr. Wachira further urged the members of Daystar community
to have the culture of giving and appreciate the little the Lord has
given to them. “We need to pray for the people who are suffering
and respond to the community needs,” he urged. On the coming
general elections, the VC called on the Daystar faculty and staff to
promote peace in the community and the nation “We need to stand
out as Christians and not be divided on tribal lines,” he said.
The VC concluded his speech by encouraging the faculty and staff
to invest in the students by being part and parcel of their activities. He
called on everyone to have at least one student they are mentoring.
The DVC Academic Affairs Rev. Prof. James Kombo, on his part
pressed the members of faculty and staff to emulate a livelihood of
cordial love in their pursuit of making Daystar great. “Yes we have
come to share over ‘chai’ but it is a lot more than that, it is about
being a community, being together, not being lone rangers.” He
acknowledged that it is not easy to build a community and said that
that is why the University endeavors to cultivate a culture of coming
together in such an event as this. Going forward, the DVC Academic
Affairs charged all to be in the habit of accommodating each other
and ensuring no one is hurting alone. “Share, feel and encourage one
another at every point and time, so that everyone will find Daystar
a suitable environment. Catch the values that we live by and let us
together build this University,” he urged.
The DVC Finance and Administration Mr. Jomo Gatundu revealed
that his office is tasked in delivering services and ensuring that the
Daystar community is satisfied. He encouraged the staff to remain in
one accord in strengthening the service delivery in order to realize the
Daystar’s values and norms.
Finally the Human Resource Manager Mr. Pius Muia introduced
new faculty and staff who were attending the VC’s tea for the first
time. He explained that the main aim of holding an annual VC’s tea
is to bring together all the members of faculty and staff to know each
other and enhance togetherness.
Last year the event was held in Nairobi Campus.

Shalom, Dorine Libese, Reinhard Bonnke, Carolyne
Wanjiku and Maureen Wanza did 23 different concerts
in five States: Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Florida, North

raise funds for the needy students of Daystar University.
The Afrizo Tour Coordinator, Rochelle Johnson and Daystar
U.S. Executive Director, Kathleen Johnson traveled with
the team for much of the tour and worked hard to make
sure things ran smoothly. Together with Daystar U.S, the
Afrizo team had a packed itinerary; they performed in
Churches, elementary schools, on airplanes, colleges,
in homes, and in retirement communities, among other
places.
It was indeed a packed trip with one activity after another

Staff Transfers
The Job Evaluation exercise undertaken in 2015 made a
number of recommendations for strengthening the University
planning and risk management functions and providing a
platform for driving performance management, monitoring the
strategic plan implementation milestones and risk management
agenda. To this end the position of Planning Officer in DVC
F& A’s office was reintroduced. This position requires someone
with a financial, analytical and risk management skills to fit the
requirements of the function.
1. Lydia Warui who has been serving in Internal Audit
Department has been transferred to the office of the
DVC- Finance & Administration as the Planning Officer
and PA to the DVC-F&A. It is hoped that she will use her
financial expertise to steer forward the planning and
risk management components in this office especially
as the University implements the new Strategic Plan
2016-2021. Lydia reported to her new office on 1st
February 2017.
At the same time, the University is in advanced stages in
launching the School of Law and the respective faculty has
been appointed including the Dean of the School. In this
breath, it became necessary to make some staff transfers as
follows:
2. Mary Ndeti who has served as the PA to the DVCFinance & Administration has been transferred to the
School of Law as the School Administrator. It is hoped
that she will use her wealth of experience to contribute
positively to the Law School. She reports to the new
assignment with effect from 1st March 2017.
We wish these two officers God’s favour and grace as they take up the new roles.
