Mission
LEAVEN works through volunteers to assist people in crisis who have basic
needs that cannot be met elsewhere.
As we reflect and report on this past year, we know the work LEAVEN
does is not possible without the generous support of our community.
We want to express our deepest appreciation for your continued
financial support, volunteer efforts, and donations of goods and
services in 2014.
You entrusted us with the resources we needed to turn hardship into
hope for 7,026 households in our community. We hope you take
pride in the knowledge that you helped your neighbors in need.
Our Annual Report has a different look this year. The following
pages include a visual narrative of our mission. It shows how your
support helps stabilize and strengthen individuals and families in crisis.
It demonstrates the value of our referral assistance as we help clients
navigate and negotiate the network of social services. We want you
to know that we are good stewards of your gifts to LEAVEN.
Mary Parsons
Executive Director
Our data illustrates the volume and scope of our work. While it is
not difficult to quantify the financial and referral assistance provided,
what cannot be measured is the sense of hope, emotional support,
and kindness our clients found at LEAVEN. Many of us know the
stress of being in a position where you lack the resources to meet your
basic needs. By respecting the dignity and value of every individual
and offering assistance with humility and compassion, this stress is
alleviated. This respectful and compassionate treatment puts our
clients in a better position to regain their self-sufficiency.
As we start 2015, we will continue to direct our efforts, energy and ideas
towards carrying out our mission: assisting people in crisis who have
basic needs that cannot be met elsewhere. We are so grateful for your
kindness and generosity that allow us to carry out this mission together.
Rev. Steve Savides
Board President

How you helped your neighbors
Our aim is to address a temporary crisis by providing needed financial and referral assistance.
We are a hand-up, not a hand-out. We expect our clients to prioritize their spending so they have
an investment in their financial obligation. By reviewing every request on a case-by-case basis, we
determine their contribution and help with the amount needed to address the crisis.

Over 200 Volunteers donated 17,261 hours
This is equivalent to 8.3 full-time employees. The LEAVEN staff is comprised
of two full-time and four part-time employees. In 2014, volunteers contributed
67% of all hours worked. We are so grateful for the vital role they play in the
daily operations of LEAVEN through their compassionate service to those
in need.
The impact of your support: one client’s story
To all members of the LEAVEN organization: “Thank you for the assistance you provided to me at a time
in my life when I was struggling like never before! I will always remain in gratitude for the kindness and
support I received and the respectful way in which I was treated. I am back on my feet and would now like
to return this for the aid of another.”
We received this letter in January 2015 from Carol*, a woman we helped in 2012. At that time, she was struggling to
make ends meet after the 2010 death of her husband and subsequent loss of his income. At 49 years of age, Carol was
too young to receive Social Security survivor’s benefits. The unemployment compensation she was receiving after her
layoff from a long-term job was coming to an end. She exhausted her savings and cut out all discretionary spending.
She was facing eviction from the apartment she lived in for 13 years. Carol was at the lowest point in her life. She was
scared, depressed and embarrassed. LEAVEN provided her the financial assistance to remain in her apartment. In
addition, we referred her to several community resources so she could access the full range of programs and services
available to assist her. Carol’s letter included a check for the amount we helped her with in 2012. Thank you, Carol, for
paying it forward!

Ways to Give

Financial
Last year financial donations
from foundations, the faith based
community, businesses, individuals and other organizations contributed immensely in our ability
to directly assist clients.

Long-term
Through support of our endowment funds and planned giving,
our goal is to cover 100% of administrative costs through endowment distributions, freeing up
more dollars for direct client
assistance.

Volunteer
Volunteer time is another valuable asset to LEAVEN. Help in
the office, interviewing clients,
casework or with various other
projects is needed.

Goods and Services
You can help our clients in ways
that go beyond our usual emergency financial assistance. Donated goods and services keep administrative costs extremely low,
enabling greater financial assistance to our clients.

Events
Follow us on facebook at
“LEAVEN Fox Cities,” or

Needy Children’s Fund
Our Needy Children’s Fund is a
segregated fund used solely to assist
children and their families who
come to LEAVEN for help.
These families may need help
because of issues involving the
health of the child or one of the
parents, the job loss of a parent, a
loss or reduction in child support,
or any number of situational factors
which causes a family to struggle to
meet their basic needs.
In 2014 we received $72,180 from
generous donors for the Needy
Children’s Fund. Our expenses
were over $234,000 to meet the
needs of clients in this category.

Transfer to the Endowment
The LEAVEN Endowment Fund was established as a means of helping to ensure that emergency financial
assistance will always be available to people in need. The goal is to fund all administrative costs through the annual
distributions generated by the fund. This will free up other donations to be used solely for client assistance.

Robert A. Udulutsch Award
Volunteers of the Year Award
When Father Robert A. Udulutsch founded
LEAVEN, he knew early on that the only way it
would be successful was through the collaborative
efforts of the community. Every year since its inception, LEAVEN has honored those who have helped
us along our way toward becoming a more effective
reality by presenting them with our highest honor the Robert A. Udulutsch Award.
Linda Boldt and Linda Keller were recognized as
the 2014 Volunteers of the Year. Linda Boldt began
volunteering in 2002 and has amassed over 1300 hours
of service. You will normally find her on Fridays, in
front of the computer wrapped under a prayer shawl.
Linda helped design and develop the new clienttracking database. She produces all the monthly and
annual client data reports. She is the only volunteer
who knows how to produce these reports. What’s
considered job security in a paid position is volunteer
appreciation at LEAVEN.
The 2014 award is presented to Jennifer Wanke to
recognize her effective and compassionate leadership
as the Executive Director of LEAVEN from 20022013.
LEAVEN benefited greatly from Jennifer’s vision,
values and dedication to the mission. Her genuine
concern for our clients and a strong desire to make a
difference in the lives of the less fortunate in our
community was unmatched. She always looked at the
best interests of the clients to guide her decisions.
Jennifer’s efforts expanded LEAVEN’s access and
ability to serve more people by overseeing a successful capital campaign which resulted in the move to
our current facility, by adding five satellite offices, and
by developing the High Risk Prevention and Next
Step Programs.
Jennifer is vivacious and charismatic. She interacts
and connects with people on a personal level. It was
because of these qualities, among many others, that
she was able to inspire and motivate our Board of
Directors, staff, and volunteers to share her commitment to the mission. Being a well-respected community activist, she was sought out to serve on many
committees and be involved in many volunteer
organizations in the Fox Cities.
She was affectionately known as the “Queen of Lean”
because of her excellent stewardship of the resources
so generously provided by the community. She
strived to keep our administrative costs low so that the
vast majority of our donated funds could be used to
help the clients we served. Jennifer was instrumental
in forming our Legacy Society to consistently build
endowments to support LEAVEN’s mission. She
developed a culture of conservatism and practicality
that is still ingrained in the Board, staff and volunteers
to this day.
Jennifer led with integrity and humility. It was
important for her to always “do right” by the donors,
staff, volunteers, clients, and community. This award
gives us the opportunity to tell her just how right
she did.
Linda’s reports are used to track outputs and outcomes, measure our impact and effectiveness, show
gaps and trends in services, and develop strategies.
Her reports are also used to communicate information
to the Board of Directors, our donors, other organizations and the community as a whole. Her attention to
detail is unparalleled. Linda’s knowledge, skills and
dedication are invaluable to LEAVEN.
Linda Keller has been volunteering at LEAVEN
since 2006 and has amassed over 1700 hours. Her
scheduled shifts are Mondays and Wednesdays, but
she often comes in more or adjusts her days if there is
a conflict. The Records Department is continually
challenged to accommodate the growing volume of
files in the limited physical space. Linda has applied
her organizational skills and creativity to maximize the
space, ensuring the department runs smoothly. She is
like an air-traffic controller who moves files and creates
signage to direct the flow of the department. She has
the ability to think beyond the status quo to come up
with new ideas.
There are many different facets of the work done in
the Records Department, including both computerentry and manual tasks. This year Linda learned how
to input data to help alleviate the backlog of cases. She
now knows how to do almost all the tasks in Records
and is willing to pitch in wherever help is needed.
Linda Boldt and Linda Keller take ownership of their
work and approach their jobs with a positive attitude.
We are very grateful for their volunteer service.
