Dear Parent,
Welcome to the May edition of our monthly newsletter, we are now well into our 3rd
term and time is passing ever so quickly. Before you know it, we will be away on our
summer holidays.
Now that the hot weather is here to stay we will only be having a quick
outdoor playtime early in the morning, weather permitting, therefore, please
ensure your child has a hat to wear to protect them from the sun. We shall
also be starting paddling pool sessions too, to keep the children nice and
cool and ensure they still do participate in some form of physical outdoor
activity.
April was a short month but never the less a busy one.
We thank all our parents who came along for their child/teacher conference and hope
you found it informative.
This month we are introducing a new topic on ‗Space and the Solar
System‘ . This promises to be an exciting topic as we delve into the
world of planets, space and astronomy. We hope to encourage the
children's imagination and who knows we may even have some budding
astronomers and astronauts amongst us.

Q- “what type of songs do the planets sing?”
A- “Nep-Tunes” ha-ha!
To find out what is happening in your child‘s class, please read on.
Ducklings
Our last and final term is here! The year has gone by so quickly and we have some
new faces replacing our Ducklings who have left. Samuel andT aima have been a wonderful
addition to our class and the children love having them here.
April has been an exciting month for the Ducklings as we have been very busy
discovering new story books and singing nursery rhymes. There isn’t a day that goes past
where we do not sing and chant our favourite rhymes and read our favourite books. We
also had a chance to bring books from home to share with our friends.
We will continue with our topic on ‘Favourite Books,
Stories and Rhymes’ this month. We will be acting out
the rhymes and some of the scenes in the story we will
read. We will be creating a Story and Rhymes Box filled
with a number of props that will trigger a song or a
scene in a familiar story, such as a stuffed toy cow
which may trigger the nursery rhyme ‘Old Mac Donald
had a Farm’ or a teddy bear will trigger the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. This
activity will develop to encourage and promote oral language development for the kids. This
will also develop and extend vocabulary, encourage and promote imaginative play and
creativity and help children to remember words and develop auditory memory skills.
From mid May onwards, we will be talking about ‘Continents, Space and the Solar
System’. This topic will give us a great opportunity to introduce the concept of night and
day, light and dark using a range of media (ICT, books, songs,
magazines and toys) and craft activities to introduce the concept
of space, planets, earth, etc.
We will learn to differentiate the concept of OPPOSITES
and learn to recognize and appreciate the colour BROWN. Our
shape is OVAL and the number is 4.
Ms Nancy
The Ducklings have really grown this last term. They enjoy being in school,
participating in various activities and best of all playing with their friends.
Poppies and Caterpillars
Hasn’t the time gone by so fast?! We are grateful to see that our Poppies and
Caterpillars Class are enjoying each moment with their friends in their class. April was
a marvellous time as we learned and talked about our favourite stories and sang our
favourite nursery rhymes. We had discussions about our favourite stories during Circle
Time, as well as bringing in books to share with our friends for ‘Show and Tell’.
Our creative side was evident when we made some beautiful crafts to display in our
classroom. We loved bear stories like the ‘Brown Bear, What Do You See?’, ‘The Bear
Hunt’, and other stories like ‘Dirty Bertie’. The Poppies listened to the story ‘The Very
Hungry Caterpillar’ and painted our very own caterpillars.
We will continue to explore more on our ‘Favourite Stories and Nursery Rhymes’ until
the middle of May and we will surely learn more new songs to sing.
May will be an exciting month as we will start our new topic on
‘Continents and Space’. We will talk about the sky, the stars, the
moon, as well as take a look at the planet earth where we live and
enjoy discussions on rockets and spaceships. During our expressive
arts, we will be exploring a variety of different media, i.e. books,
songs, music and movement and DVDs which we will further help us with our creative
development. Two of our favourite songs are:- ‘Five Little Men in a Flying Saucer’ and
‘Ten Little Rockets’.
The colour of the month is, brown and our number is 4.
With the weather warming up this May, we will incorporate water play in our list of
activities.
We would like to remind our dear parents to please provide your child with a change of
clothes and towel for this activity.

Busy little Caterpillars having so much fun!
Ladybirds and Sunflowers
During the month of April we have sung a lot of new nursery rhymes as well
as enjoyed thrilling new stories. We enjoyed creating all different art activities to
decorate our classrooms. The children enjoyed lots of role play acting out ‘Miss Polly had a
Dolly’, ‘A Farmer in his Dell’ etc.
In the month of May, we are continuing with our favourite stories and we will be choosing
books which the children have thoroughly enjoyed and using them as our main focus for art
activities.
In the second half of May, we will be starting our new topic which is ‘Space and the Solar
System’. We will be looking at the different planets in our solar system and creating our
own mobiles with moons, stars and planets.
We will be discussing fun facts about space. Also we will be creating our
own aliens, space ships and rockets to display in our classrooms.
We will be singing songs like ‘Zoom zoom zoom’, ‘Five Little Men in a Flying
Saucer’ and ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.
Some of the stories we will be reading are ‘Five Little Aliens’ and ‘Roaring
Rockets’.
The colours we will be covering are black and white, the shape we will be
exploring is oval and the number of the month is number 9.
Looking forward to another exciting month in the Ladybirds and Sunflowers classes.
Ms Amber and Ms Ash
Look what the Ladybirds have been up too!
Sunflowers were so excited when they saw the rain.
Bumblebees and Butterflies
We have a busy last term ahead of us with plenty of events and
activities in store. We are also looking forward to building upon all the great
work achieved with your children in Term 1 & Term 2.
‘Once upon a time…………….’ Both classes are enjoying our new topic on ‘Books, Stories and
Rhymes’. It is giving them the opportunity to express themselves using their communication
and language skills. It is great to see that many of the children have gained confidence
throughout the year to be able to stand up individually and recite their favourite nursery
rhyme.
We have explored books from a variety of authors such as the ‘Gruffalo’, ‘How Much I love
You!’ and ‘The Jolly Postman’.
The Home Corner is a great place to re-call the stories through role play, providing the
children with various props to encourage their imagination.
‘Share a story with your child every day’
This encourages your child to love and respect books from an early age and enjoy
storytelling. This is an important step in learning to read when they go to school.
You are welcome to come into nursery during our ‘Circle Time’ to share your child’s
favourite story with the class. Please inform your class teacher if you wish to do
so.
The majority of the children can count verbally up to 20 and this month we will be
concentrating on ‘number recognition’ and ‘quantities’.
Below are the areas of learning we are covering in the month of May:
Jolly Phonic letters: w & v
Shapes: Rectangle
Colour: Purple
Number: 9
Concepts: Above & Below
Celebrations: Story character dress up day – Thursday 16th May
Snack & Lunch
When sending snack/lunch items to school we would ask that you send enough food for both
breaks as it is a long day. Don’t forget to observe our healthy eating policy by avoiding
chocolate, candy, crisps or sugary drinks in your child’s lunch box.
We are looking forward to making our last term interesting and memorable.
