Main Topics of Study
Big Books linked to Geography and History topics e.g. stories from the
rainforest, Mini topic of Dragons, comprehension skills, grammar and
spelling from Nelson scheme. Drama skills – freeze frame and story
whoosh. Preparation for poetry competition. Extended writing – reports,
stories, diaries etc.
Introduction of simple multiplication tables – arrays, division.
Development of place value using practical apparatus, partitioning and
recombining. Problem solving in the rainforest café (money). Looking at
relationships between the four rules of number. Development of space,
measure and data handling skills.
Forces and movement: Magnets, flight – aeroplane investigation, Cars –
investigation involving slopes and friction. Making own rockets. With

Exploring websites on rainforests and deserts. Using computer to
support English and Mathematics skills. Refining word processing &
presentation skills. Use of iPads.
Design, make and evaluate sunglasses to be worn in the desert or
rainforest [ link Geography]
Language and songs based on ‘Dépêche-toi Molly’ : clothing, parts of the
body.
Gymnastics – forward rolls, simple gymnastic sequences, using the
apparatus.
Project about deserts and rainforests, global location and adaptation of
plants and animals to hostile conditions. Visit from Dave Shaw [
Rainforest Roadshow]
Great Fire of London, causes and consequences, use of Samuel Pepys’
diary as a historical source from 1666.
Character and mood in music, Dynamics (loud and soft – forte and piano),
Responding physically to music, Song for Mothers’ Day Service
