The above quote has been taken from the famous classic adventure science
fiction novel–„JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH‟, written in
1864 by the French author, Jules Verne. This story has been made into a
marvellous fantasy movie in 2008.
Thanks to their visual nature, movies are able to literally “show” the story.
The theme for your holiday homework is based on the above story, to read
as a book, or to watch as a movie, the choice is yours. So, go on and enjoy
the amazing activities that have been put together for you.
ACTIVITY 1:
DESIGN YOUR OWN BOOK COVER
A book cover is any protective covering used to bind together the pages of a
book. It also gives us an idea of what the book is about. It must have the
book‟s name, brief description about the book and the name of the
author. After you have read the book „Journey to the Centre of the Earth‟,
let your creative juices flow and design your own book cover. A template is
given below. Have fun!

 You could use the above template or use any of your own ideas.
 Keep the size in mind. (Length: 10 inches, Breadth: 8 inches)
 Stick it horizontally on a pink A4 size sheet, so that you can make the
best use of the sheet

ACTIVITY 2 : Character Description
After reading the book „Journey to the Centre of the Earth‟, you have
become familiar with the various characters in the story. Write a brief
description of your favourite character in about 70 words and also state why
you like the character more than the others. You can even draw or stick a
cut out of his/her picture. You can choose from the characters given below.
Main characters
 Professor Otto Lidenbrock: a man of science
 Axel: the nephew of Professor Lidenbrock, overcautious and
unadventurous student.
 Hans Bjelke: a Danish-speaking Icelandic eiderduck hunter who
becomes their guide; dependable and resourceful .
 Gräuben: the goddaughter of Professor Lidenbrock with whom Axel is
in love, native of Virland in Estonia.
 Martha: the maid at the house of Professor Lidenbrock

ACTIVITY- 5 – HURDLES AND SUCCESS
“Success comes after you conquer your biggest obstacles and hurdles.” The
movie is not only the journey to the centre of the Earth but also a journey
of hard work and overcoming difficulties with courage. Keeping this in mind,
Lets make a board game- HURDLES AND SUCCESS
Make a board game starting from 1-50. You may use a galloping horse, a
sailing boat, a rope/ a rope ladder to show successes and a misbehaving
compass, a Venus flytrap, a fireball, a volcano, a mushroom forest to show
hurdles.
An example has been given for you. Now get set and extend it to 50.

ACTIVITY 7- CARNIVOROUS PLANTS
During your journey through the book/ the movie you will also find the mention of
carnivorous plants such as Venus fly trap.
Carnivorous plants are plants which get nutrients from trapping and eating animals. There
are 630 different kind of carnivorous plants around the world. These plants have slippery
leaves that are shaped like a funnel and bugs land on the leaf into a pool of digestive
juices found in the bottom of leaf as they are attracted by the smell, sweet nectar and
bright colours.
Make an information card on any 4 carnivorous plants eg. : Pitcher plant, Sun dew,
Bladderworts, Butterworts, Cobra lilly, corkscrew, Water wheel plant, Rainbow plant etc.
Choose any four out of these and write their characteristic features and draw/ paste
their pictures on any coloured A4 sheet. Given below is the information card on Venus fly
trap.
Venus fly trap plant usually has about six stems with hinged leaves. The edges of the
leaves are lined with “teeth”, when the leaves snap shut the prey in contact, it forms a
trap. Once the prey is inside the plant it digests and absorbs it.

ACTIVITY 8: Create a Mushroom Forest
On an A4 sheet, create a mushroom forest as shown in the movie/ described
in the book. Use different colours, waste materials such as Styrofoam cups,
thermocol, button, small twigs, paper plate, old buttons, saw dust, small
pebbles, used A4 sheets, fallen leaves etc. Some pictures are given here for
your reference.

play with your friends.
