Eureka Math Parent Tips First Grade Module 5 This document is being produced for the purpose of giving parents and students in Calcasieu Parish a better understanding of the math concepts being taught. Identifying, Composing, and Partitioning Shapes In this module, students consider part–whole relationships through a geometric lens. They will learn to recognize, classify, compose, and partition shapes as well as tell time to the half hour. Louisiana Standards: - Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. - Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quartercircles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape. (Students do not need to learn formal names such as “right rectangular prism.”) - Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares. - Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks. Recognize and identify coins, their names, and their values. For example, use 3 triangles to make 1 trapezoid. They will also learn about tangrams. A tangram is a square made up of various shapes. First Grade Module 5 Students should recognize 3dimensional shapes and use them to build new structures. They will take a cone and a cylinder and build a new structure with the two shapes. They will also determine if a shape is divided into halves or quarters. They will also have to describe a structure already built using the names of 3dimensional shapes. Looking at the picture, the student would explain the cylinder is below the cone and the cone is on top of the cylinder. Equal Parts Not Equal Parts Students will recognize the two half circles on the circular clock face and connect this understanding with the half hour. How you can help at home… • Go on a shape hunt outside, ask your student to name the shapes of doors, windows, bicycle wheels, etc. • Ask your student to identify the shapes of various road signs while traveling in the car. • Talk with your student about the various shapes of items packaged in the grocery store. • Build with blocks. Discuss what shapes were used to create the structure.
