Kidstop
IN BLOOM
Dear Kidstop Families,
Well into the school year, we want to thank you for your
ongoing support of our Kidstop employees. We continue to
strive to provide your children with the best possible
program with new opportunities and choices.
This month, in the first half we provide the kids with activities to
say how much they love you. Everything from Emoji Valentines
to Candle Making. We'll celebrate the 100th Day of School and
for those who want to hit the ice, we will offer students the
choice to go outdoor skating. This week, Kidstop is announcing
our STEM Fair which will take place in April. Allocated
programming time and materials will be provided to those
students who want to participate and submit exhibits. This is
open to students of all grade levels. You can read more about
the history of STEM in education and about the fair in this
newsletter.

be designing parfaits, fruit desserts, their own cupcakes and
making some dishes.
We will finish the month with President's Day activities and
weather permitting a sledding day on the hill at the back of the

So, S.T.E.M - what is it?
If you are a parent who has a school aged child chances are you have heard the acronym STEM (Science Technology
Engineering Mathematics). Some sources attribute the acronym to Judith A. Ramaley, who was the assistant director for education and human resources at
the National Science Foundation from 2001 to 2004. Ramaley later served as president of Winona State University in Minnesota, and the local paper there
quoted her as saying that when her team first created curricula for those disciplines, the acronym they came up with was "SMET," but she "didn't like the
sound of that word." So she changed it.
A piece from January 30, 1985, states a policy forum that would address "whether recent initiatives to improve education in mathematics, science,
engineering, and other technology-related subjects were likely to meet the country's needs."
On July 12, 2000, an article about then-Texas governor George W. Bush's plan to allocate "$345 million to increase federal student-loan forgiveness for
students who major in science, math, technology, or engineering and commit to teach in a high-need school for at least five years."
The first explicit mention of STEM—using the acronym—seems to be in 2005. Rep. Vernon Ehlers, a Republican from Michigan, and Rep. Mark Udall, a
Democrat from Colorado, had "set up the Science Technology Engineering and Math, or STEM, caucus" in Congress. (That caucus is still around.)
By 2008, STEM starts showing up in headlines—an indication it had become a common educational term.
