As I'm sure many of you are aware we are currently part way through the month of Ramadan- a
month where many Muslims fast. Followed by the celebration of Eid al-Fitr. I thought it would be a
good opportunity to look at a little more into this time and celebration.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is the time when Muslims observe a fast
from sunrise to sunset. Fasting not only involves not eating food it also includes drinking water.
Nothing should pass the lips. Ramadan is one of the five Pillars of Islam and is observed as the
month in which the Qur'an was revealed.
Muslims who are exempt from fasting can include elderly or sick women, women who are
pregnant or have just given birth. Instead of fasting, these women can provide food to a homeless
person or donate enough money to cover the cost of feeding a person for the month of Ramadan.
Ramadan lasts for one month out of the Islamic calendar year. The Islamic calendar year,
having roughly 354 days as opposed to 365, differs from the Gregorian calendar but still consists
of 12 months. Ramadan occurs during the ninth month.
Muslims celebrate Ramadan to purify their souls, fine-tune their relationship with God and
observe self-sacrifice. Ramadan commemorates the night of power during which God revealed
the Qur'an to the prophet Muhammad.

Eid al-Fitr is a Muslim holiday, starting at the end of Ramadan. The event starts with the sighting of
the new moon and early morning congregational prayers known as Salaat al-Eid. On the way to
the prayer grounds, a declaration of faith, known as takbir, is recited and charitable contributions
known as Zakat al-Fitr are made.
There are Muslims from diverse cultures that celebrate the holiday differently, but generally, there
are large feasts and festivals with close family and friends and gifts are passed amongst one
another. Some Muslims hang up lights or decorate their arms with henna tattoos while wearing
festive attire and jewelry. A commonly said greeting during this time of the year is "Eid Mubarak,"
meaning, "Have a blessed Eid."
Eid al-Fitr symbolises a fresh start after the time of spiritual reflection and sense of community that
comes with Ramadan. Muslims see Eid al-Fitr as a time to celebrate and express gratitude for
their blessings, and for one another

Playday is the national day for play in the UK, traditionally held on the first Wednesday in August.
This year’s Playday takes place on Wednesday 3 August.
On Playday, thousands of children and their families get out to play at hundreds
of community events across the UK.
From small-scale community events to thousands of children taking part in events organised in parks
and open spaces – Playday is celebrated by each community in a way that suits them.
As well as a celebration of children’s right to play, Playday is a campaign that highlights the
importance of play in children’s lives.

Speaking at the NDNA Conference today, minister Sam Gyimah, announced that a
review of GCSE English and Math requirements will take place as part of the
Workforce Strategy.
Separately, the DfE has published a summary of responses it received on the
consultation, along with the government’s response outlining the next steps.
The government has decided to proceed to include, from 1 September 2016, a
requirement in the EYFS that for newly qualified early years staff (with full and
relevant level 2 or level 3 childcare qualification) to also hold a current Paediatric
First Aid (PFA) or emergency PFA certificate in order to be included in the required
ratios in an early years setting. Childcare providers will be allowed a three month
‘grace’ period to complete PFA training after starting work with a new employer.
** The Prevent Duty **
You may want to check your staff are aware of their Prevent
responsibility? Do they know what to do if they came across
inappropriate behaviour?
Ensure everyone's knowledge is up to date – complete the
training.
