The newsletter of St Bernard’s College, Essendon is published the 2nd & 4th week of each month
From The College
Leadership Team
As the 2006 school year
draws to a close we reflect
on the highs and lows that
this year has brought. Let us
remember especially the
Italiano, Kauzlaric & Manago
families – and all others who
have lost loved ones and will
be
finding
Christmas
especially difficult this year.
Let us also remember the blessings we have received
and value the joy that our families can bring. We
especially wish to thank the many staff, students and
families who have given so generously to help the St
Bernards Community. A special blessing to those staff,
sudents and families who are finishing their time at SBC.
May you all have a safe and blessed Christmas 2006.
Unfortunately, we find that we will be farewelling
some wonderful staff who are moving to other
endeavours next year:
o Adrian Kendall - 24 years service
o Frank Merlo - 22 years service
o Napoleon Rodezno - 7 years service
o Gerard Large - 6 years service
o Carolyn Stone - 5 years service
o Jamie Watson - 5 years service
o Amanda Mooney - 3 years service
Every one of these people has made a significant
contribution to our College, in a multitude of areas
and we are indebted to them, for all they have done
for SBC. In addition to the above, Ross Montalto and
Tarik Kendjer will be taking Long Service Leave during
2007 and we trust they have an enriching time during
their period of leave.
Please keep in your prayers the Year 12 students who
will be receiving their VCE results this coming Monday.
The Clairvaux awards night will provide an opportunity
to congratulate our students, who have excelled
academically, as well as seeing who wins the
prestigious Golden Jubilee Award for 2006.
Important Reminder
From the start of 2007 students in Yr 7-11 will be required to
wear the summer shirt in Term 1 & after Cup Day in Term 4.
Year 12 students will have the option of wearing the special
Year 12 tie which can be purchased for $12.
Please check the uniform shop hours in case you need to purchase a new or
second hand shirt.

News/Justice Issues
New Catholic Social Justice Groups
Concern for the preservation of democratic traditions
and a just and compassionate society, has seen the
emergence of new groups in Australia that are
committed to the common good and the application of
principles drawn from the Christian Social Justice
tradition.
The Centre For An Ethical Society was launched by
Sir Gerard Brennan AC KBE in Sydney on Nov 21st . A
few days later a symposium organized by the recently
formed Social Policy Connections group in
Melbourne on "Evaluating the G20 – key issues and the
implications for us" addressed the issue of the
implementation of the Millenium Development Goals.
The Social Policy Connections group is closely allied to
Polmin a political lobby group which has been active
for several years with the aim of influencing public
policy for the common good in accord with Catholic
Social Justice principles.
Another analysis of the outcomes of the G20 meeting
can be found at the Jubilee Australia website.
The emergence of these groups followed the launch of
the Faith Doing Justice website in the same month,
and taken together they indicate a depth of concern
that has arisen at current directions of Australian
society where economic concerns appear to be given
priority over the human, the individual over the
community, and where issues of fairness, compassion
and the long term good are ignored.
These groups would also wish to re-assert that
for a Christian the pursuit of social justice is an
obligation and not just an option, an obligation
that some would seek to deny or minimise.
Interestingly, a similar group Catholics in Alliance for
the Common Good has also recently emerged in the
United States with the aim of :"promoting the necessary conditions for a culture of life
- a culture that reverences the dignity of the human
person over greed, materialism, and the politics of
division". It too aims "to be faithful to the Catholic
tradition that calls us to participate actively in public life
in the service of human dignity, social justice and the
common good."
As the year draws to a close and the feast of Christmas
focuses our attention on the common values we hold as
Christians, take the opportunity to reflect on the year
gone by and what difference has been made by each
one of us to the world we live in.
Parent & Board News
The College Board
After some negotiations, SBC has been successful in
purchasing the Santa Monica property as at January 1,
2007. This will free up the College to begin plans for a
significant upgrade of the facilities that should allow all
groups within our community to benefit from the
beautiful environment at Santa Monica. The Board and
Advisory Forum will commence this process with a
planning weekend early in 2007.
Over the break we will see extensive paving taking
place and also the completion of the new car park.
