ColorField
March 12 – April 7, 2014
Juror – Timothy App
In this homage to the Washington Color School, artists are asked to submit works that focus on
color, the emotional power of color and the visual power of color. Several Washington Color
School painters were early Art League faculty members. Renowned artists such as Sam Gilliam,
Gene Davis and Lou Stovall influenced generations of artists not just locally but around the world.
Works submitted should reference the influences of this movement but do not have to be
completely abstract in nature. The Color Field painters such as Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth
Noland and Gene Davis left imagery behind, the color itself became the subject, form and
composition. How we use color in our work today has been influenced by these artists. Use their
concepts of color to influence the works submitted. Artists can look to Art League faculty such as
Susan Herron, Marsha Staiger and John Blee for inspiration in how to use color to emphasize and
communicate ideas.
