We have lots of fun planned with
a trip to Elkton for Oktoberfest,
lunches at Abby’s Pizza and
Pedotti’s restaurants, a play at
the local theater, and a
community concert! And here at
the Village, we’ll be celebrating
Linus Oakes’ 30th Birthday with a
blessing, live music, dancing,
wine, hors d’oeuvres and a
special dinner followed with
birthday cake. What a special
celebration!

Fraud & Abuse Prevention for Seniors
Billions of dollars each year are lost by seniors and the elderly to
fraud and scams. There are so many scams around now, that it is
difficult to keep track. The monetary loss directly impacts not only
the lives of the victims, but their families as well, who may have
to bear the cost of care for their loved one who can no longer
afford it. Learn how to protect yourself and your family!
1. Use only trustworthy people and organizations when
making financial arrangements and decisions.
Local businesses are best because you can visit their offices in
person and know they are legitimate.
2. Get everything in writing; do not take verbal assurances.
Make sure to read and understand documentation before
signing anything. Legitimate business people will take the
time to clearly explain documents to you before signing.
3. Take time before making decisions; do not sign a document
or make purchases or donations over the phone or online
without careful consideration.
Do not make rush decisions. It’s a good sign it’s a scam if you
are being pressured to “act now!”
4. Do not send cash or make wire transfers.
Legitimate businesses do not operate this way.
5. Lock financial documents and information in a safe place.
A locking file cabinet at home or safe deposit box at the bank
works best for important documents. Make sure a trusted
person or family member also has access.
6. Ask why someone needs your personal or financial
information before you share it.
As a general rule, businesses that need your personal or
financial information, already have it! You should not ever
give this information over the phone!
7. Become familiar with up to date information on scams and
frauds through the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
