The Newsletter of Oxley Christian College From The Principal Welcome to Term 3. We especially welcome new students, families, and staff. We trust that they will soon feel at home in the Oxley community. Last week Oxley introduced a new 1:1 Digital Learning Program. Year 7 students eagerly received their new Surface Pro tablets. Our ICT team conducted 14 training sessions for students and parents to get to know their new devices. The College provides ongoing technical support for these devices as part of Oxley’s continued commitment to teaching and learning excellence. The program is fully supported by the College ICT Help Desk during 8.00am and 4.20pm weekdays, located at the Cloud, our recently refurbished learning space and service centre. The staged introduction of the program will involve all students from Years 7 - 12 by 2018. Staff have engaged in extensive Professional Development to maximise learning with the rollout of the new technology. Each faculty has integrated the use of the Surface Pro into their core curriculum. Specifically, students will use their tablets to access SEQTA (learning management portal), textbooks and other teaching aids, to support learning across a range of subjects. 21st Century skills are core skills that support students to master the multi-dimensional abilities required of them in a world different to when their parents attended school. The key skills required by students include those strongly developed by the 1:1 Digital Learning Program. • Critical Thinking - think effectively, examine ideas from different angles. Isabella, Cooper and Joshua receiving assistance at the Cloud Issue No 11 28 July 2016 • Digital Literacy - understand and develop skills to use technology to research ideas, express their thoughts, design and create. • Collaboration - help each other, share responsibility for their workload and thrive in today’s team-orientated society. • Communication - communicate effectively through digital and non-digital media. • Creativity - explore multiple scenarios, hypothesise and imagine possibilities • Problem Solving - find solutions, complete tasks and design products with initiative. • Love of Learning - have an interest and capacity to continue learning throughout life. Term 3 is an important time for teachers and students to engage in academic teaching and learning across all curriculum areas. Many other programs provide a diversity of educational experiences to ensure that students have opportunities to develop a broad range of skills and interests. The Senior School production of Seussical is the first of many highlights, which promises to be a great show. Sadly, I will miss some key events in the coming weeks, as I will be recovering from knee surgery. The Deputy Principal, Geoff Roberts-Thomson, and the Head of Junior School, Sharee Gaiser, will be available to assist parents in my absence. We look forward to an eventful term in which students can celebrate their unique gifts from God. Sally Broadley Jeremy and Chelsea enjoying the use of their Surface Pros in the Cloud Devotion Have you ever put together a large jigsaw puzzle? 500 pieces, 1500 piece, 5000 pieces? Seems like a good idea at the time doesn’t it? My 7 year old son loves puzzles, and he was given a 1500 piece puzzle in February and, as a family, slowly but surely we’ve been working away at it bit by bit ever since. During the holiday break, we finished it and the excitement surrounding its completion was enthusiastic, to say the least! As I was growing up, we used to holiday as a family in the Grampians. We stayed in this little house where there was no TV, no technology, not even a phone! We had to walk down to the payphone if we needed to make a call. Mum loved it that way. It meant we had to entertain each other, we had to interact… as a family. Every year on the first day I was utterly and completely bored! But by the second day, we’d found things to do. We’d play by the river, play cards or build cubby houses. And every year we’d pull out one of the large puzzles the owners had stored there. We’d set it up on the floor and throughout the week we were there, we’d try and get it finished. If you’ve ever attempted a puzzle, you’d know the first part is always the most fun. It’s the easiest, the puzzle seems to come together quickly and easily. Why? Because if you’re smart, you are working on the edge pieces first, finding all the flat edges and assembling them together - the frame, the outside of the puzzle. But then it gets a little trickier - filling in the middle. We’d look for themes and group them together: pieces with flowers in a pile; grass pieces in another pile; roof tiles in another pile; sky pieces in another. Then we would try and work through a section at a time. Some sections would be quick to do, like people or houses, but then you’d come to grass, water and sky…! 50 pieces of blue! They all look the same! Suddenly, we’ve gone from 50 pieces done in an hour, to maybe two an hour. This point was “ where quitters quit and would-be winners dug deep to find something extra. My youth pastor once shared with me a saying he used to say to himself every time he faced a challenge or a time when things got rough or just plain hard. “Ahh, this is where the quitters must give up.” It was a challenge to himself to recognise that whilst things were tough right then - if his goal was worth it - this was where he had to push through. This point was where quitters quit and would-be winners dug deep to find something extra. He was right. When you get to that stage in putting a puzzle together, where you just want to walk away and not return, who really cares? It’s only a puzzle! The initial fun has gone, the easy bits are finished and what’s left is hard work. What remains is the question: Are you going to be satisfied with being beaten by some oddly shaped pieces of cardboard?! Or are you going to have the self control, the determination, and the grit to refocus and finish it off? Every year I was sure at some point that this would be the year we wouldn’t finish the puzzle in time, the year we wouldn’t get all pieces into place before we needed to leave. Yet every year, somehow, by just plugging away, bit by bit, not allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by the task ahead, not being unwilling or too proud to ask other family members to come and help, we did it. We accomplished what we set out to achieve! What are some of your goals in life? I’m sure they are larger than putting a 1000 piece puzzle together. Look ahead and see the goal, commit to running the race to its full completion, don’t give up and have what if’s in your life. Dig deep when things get hard and don’t be a quitter. Don’t be too proud or unwilling to ask for help along the way and then celebrate your success, and be ready to take on the future. James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Pastor Matt Chaplain Senior School Junior School Term 3 has well and truly started. In the Year 7 area there is a buzz of excitement as they are the first year level to utilise their Surface devices as a daily tool. While there are occasional teething problems, already it seems that the program is a great success. Welcome to Term 3! How wonderful to witness such an enthusiastic return to school last week, with students eager to reconnect with teachers and classmates. This term promises to be full of opportunities for students to further consolidate learning and accept challenges to go above and beyond their achievements in Semester 1. We also warmly welcome back Mrs Libby Ledwidge following her long service leave. One of our feature events of the Calendar – our Senior School musical – is on next week. Seussical will be performed in four shows, from Wednesday to Saturday night. The teamwork for this show has been wonderful. Creative and colourful work on props, costumes and staging has supported a fabulous and hard-working cast. We look forward to watching the fruit of their labour. I wish we were still able to advertise this show, but it has been sold out for some weeks already! In the week after Seussical, we will enjoy our annual International Week. During this week we celebrate our international students, as well as the languages we study within the College. There are many highlights during the week. In Junior School, the International Costume Parade is a picture of colour and life. The international lunch is another highlight for many, and the week concludes with the Year 11 Dinner, which continues the International theme. Amidst all of these calendar events, our eyes are already beginning to turn toward 2017. The first steps in include our Year 10 into 11 Information sessions, which were held last week. Year 10 subject selections are due in a fortnight. For parents of our current Year 12 students we will shortly be hosting a Parent Information Evening (Wednesday 10 August) regarding VTAC and the process by which Year 12 students choose tertiary pathways. One of the hallmarks of Oxley is our sense of community. I am conscious that, so far, I have described events and plans. These events and plans bring joy only because of the opportunity to share in the growth and development of our students. As staff within this community, we delight in investing, with God, in this growth. Geoff Roberts-Thomson Deputy Principal - Head of Senior School The ICT Department wish to thank the Year 7 students and parents for their patience with the roll-out of the SP4s and the students for their positive attitudes as they become familiar with their new devices and the program. Charmaine Nell ICT Manager Students from Prep to Year 6 are now focused on rehearsing their items for our upcoming Junior Musical, Daniel: A Hard Act to Swallow. Under the guidance of our Performing Arts teacher, Mrs Narelle Walker, and Director, Mr Andrew Levey, our main cast are learning lines and participating in rehearsals during their Performing Arts lessons and after school. Please add these dates to your diaries – Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 September. Ticketing information will be available in due course. Congratulations to our Prep students who celebrated 100 days of school on Friday 22 July. It was a pleasure to visit the classrooms and hear the students share learning reflections for the past 100 days. The Prep year is a foundational one and a time of great learning across many domains. Thank you to our Prep teachers and their assistants for organising such a memorable day for our students. It is such a privilege to work in partnership with parents to educate a child. Staff valued the opportunity to meet with families at our Parent Teacher Interviews this week. Thank you to all parents who attended and engaged in robust conversations around student progress and goal setting for the coming semester. On Thursday 4 August, we will formally acknowledge the students who will serve in the role of Home Group Captain or Enviro Team Captain for Semester 2. Parents are invited to attend this special Chapel service at LMC from 1.30pm, where students will receive their badges on stage. Year 3 – 6 Choir members will participate in the biannual IPSHA Choral Festival on Tuesday 16 August. Tickets are available from Trybooking https://www. trybooking.com/LOUP at the price of $25 per seat. All tickets are general admission with no reserved. Choir members do not require tickets. Please book early to avoid disappointment. Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people both now and forevermore. Psalm 125:1-2 Sharee Gaiser Head of Junior School What Did You Do at School Today? Prep On Friday 22 July, Prep celebrated 100 days at school! This was a very exciting and special day full of fun activities. We talked about what we had learnt in the past 100 days, made special hats, counted to 100 and made a necklace with 100 Cheerios. We can’t wait for the next 100 days! Year 1 Elizabeth creating her Prep 100 Day necklace. Back to school! This term we have been reading traditional tales and learning about good and bad characters. We created a Wanted Poster about the Big Bad Wolf, and used amazing adjectives to describe his appearance, personality and the crime he committed! We constructed a 3D map of a forest and explained the route Little Red Riding Hood took to get to Grandma’s house. We used positional language that we are learning about in Maths. She went around the flowers, behind her house, over the log, and between the trees. In ICU we are thinking about the changes that occur to a landscape over a long period of time. We enjoyed the book Window by Jeannie Baker and imagined how the view from our classroom might have looked before our school had ever been built. In Bible we are learning about the incredible plan God had for David. Year 2 Elvin and Matthew wear their special Prep 100 Day hats We have made a wonderful start to the term. We are practising asking quick and deep questions to help us become better readers. We also made up a question to use for our maths survey and after gathering information, created our graphs. In P.E. Mr Gaschk has shown us how to handball as part of our football unit. We are looking forward to improving our kicking skills and getting out on the oval. In ICU, we went for a hunt around the school to find evidence of water use and we found signs of water everywhere. Science is a blast! Year 3 Prep celebrating 100 Days of Prep together We look forward to an exciting term ahead. Learning our production songs and actions, participating in a class shop, running the Father’s Day Stall, and a rich unit of work in Science! We are discovering how heat changes the shape of objects. We have experimented with heating chocolate, oil, cordial and metal spoons on a heat source and making predictions. We have begun to learn about the terms solid and liquid. In English, we have been using our Writer’s Notebook and learning that we make connections when we read. In Maths, we have been writing our learning goals for Semester 2. Year 4 Johannah and Mykah eating their Prep 100 Day cupcake We have had a fantastic start to Term 3. We have two lovely new students – Zara (4G) and Chloe (4K) – who are both delightful to teach. We have been learning about fractions this week and have been counting by quarters, halves and thirds. During ICU, we have been looking at the different purposes of different materials. More specifically, we are beginning the process of designing packaging to mail a fragile item. Down at The Barn, our classes are preparing to take our Prep buddy classes to show them how to plant veggie seedlings. We are also exploring writing Procedures this term. Writing booklets for our Prep buddies on how to plant veggies is also on the agenda. Rehearsals for the production, Daniel: A Hard Act to Swallow, has begun and we are loving the choreography moves that Miss Burt has taught us. Ask us to show you our moves! Year 5 Welcome back! We have hit the ground running (at a solid pace) this week, quickly settling back into the school routine. In Maths we are focusing on fractions. We enjoyed making large number walls, full of colours to represent equivalent fractions. In ICU, our topic is What’s the Matter? We will be learning about chemical science throughout this term. This week we have looked at the different states of matter. We used objects and substances to lead our inquiry as we explored the observable properties and the different behavior of solids, liquids and gases. In English, we set up our reading journal as we begin reading our class novel for this term, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis. We also enjoyed writing about our holiday using descriptive language, sensory detail and a Show Not Tell approach (leaving the reader to visualise and be surprised!). Over the next few weeks our focus for Bible will be the Armour of God. We will be learning about the power of God’s Word; how God equips us for the challenges we face; and His promises for us as we take up our cross and trust in His divine purpose and perfect plan for our lives, each and every day. Year 6 Argue, debate, reason, persuade. In English we have been writing argumentative texts, using logical arguments and evidence to persuade our readers to believe our points of view. We have also launched into the What on Earth? ICU unit. We are discovering how the earth is structured and how this has caused many natural disasters. Rehearsals have begun for the Junior Production, Daniel: A Hard Act to Swallow, and we are busily learning lyrics, lines and movement. Excitement abounds! Angeline Richardson and Hattie Tomlin Health Captains Morrisby Online is a career guidance tool that helps students to identify potential career paths and make informed decisions about their study options. Participating students will take a 105 minute online assessment and questionnaire which measure a variety of elements including aptitude, career interest, work attitude, talents and motivations. Once the assessment is complete, students will have access to personally tailored career and education suggestions, plus a wealth of careers-related resources, all presented on a dynamic and interactive website. We believe this will be an invaluable tool in your son’s/ daughter’s future decisions about VCE subject selection for Year 10 students and as well as future research into careers and higher education for Year 10-12 students. We plan to run this session for students on Wednesday 17 August in the afternoon. This is the week of EISM finals. If the student would like to take part in Morrisby Online, but is involved in finals or unable to do the test at this time, they should still register and we can organise an alternative time slot. The cost of the service is $50 per student. If you would like your child to take part, please visit the following website: https://app.morrisby.com/p2TK56 The system is fully secure and all major debit and credit cards are accepted. Two of Simone Engele’s awardwinning poems from previous years (Hope and Yggdrasil) were showcased, as well as some award-winning Junior School students writing (Ava Simpson’s The Storm and Clouds and Lachlan Walsh’s Cat). The editor of Young Xpressions was impressed by Ava and Lachlan’s work in another magazine and requested permission to republish their writing in Free Xpression. Well done, Simone, Ava and Lachlan! Additionally, Simone Engele’s poem, Valkyries, and Kierah Kelly’s poem, The Box, were recently published in Oz Kids in Print and shortlisted for the Young Australian Writer’s Awards. Simone entertained Senior School assembly with a reading of both of these poems. Congratulations, Simone and Kierah!
