ABOUTTHEPROGRAM
Thethingabouthavingamixedchorusisthatyouwillneverrunoutoffantasticmusictoprogram.
SATBhasbeenthestandardchoraltextureforcenturies,andthepoolofrepertoireisbottomless.This
programgrewoutofadesiretomovebeyondthetyrannyofthemixed‐voicemostly‐four‐part
repertoire,toenjoythesonoritiesthatareproducedbywomen’sandmen’svoicesalone,andtoexplore
someofthefantasticmusicthathasbeenwrittenforthem.(The“battleofthesexes”anglecamelater,
fromourmarketingdepartment.That’snotreallywhattheconcertisabout,andI’mnotabigfanofthe
clichésaboutgenderdifferences.Iwillsay,however,thatinoursegregatedrehearsals,thewomenwere
veryfocusedandtask‐oriented.Themenmostlywantedtotalkabouttheirfeelings.)
Therepertoirethatourwomenaresingingisparticularlyfine,andallofitbycontemporaryAmerican
composers:aninventivesetofthreecontrastingpiecesbyLibbyLarsen;twoplayfulandgorgeous
settingsofMaySwensonpoemsbyGwynethWalker;JamesMulholland’sheart‐on‐its‐sleevesettingof
EmilyDickinson’s“Heart!WeWillForgetHim,”featuringFrenchhorn;andourfriendBradley
Ellingboe’smarvelous“GettingUsedtoHeavens,”writtenforanAlaskanall‐statetreblechorusin2006.
It’sallwonderfulstuffforourwomentosing.
Still,asAliceParkersays:peoplecanbelukewarmaboutwomen’schoruses,butnobodydoesn’tliketo
hearmensing.Ourtenorsandbassesgettoofferawidervarietyofrepertoirethanthewomendo:an
ItalianpartsongbySchubert(whowrotevolumesoffantasticmusicformen’schorus;Iwouldlovetodo
anentireconcertofit),anarrangementofthatgreatRussianmotet“SalvationisCreated”;acreative
mashupversionof“AmazingGrace”and“HouseoftheRisingSun”;AliceParkerandRobertShaw’s
irresistiblearrangementof“ViveL’Amour,”(whichscholarsunanimouslyagreeisprobablyan18thor
19thcenturydrinking‐orcampfire‐orfolksong,whoseoriginsareeitherFrench,EnglishorAmerican);
and–requiredbystatuteonanyconcertofmen’smusic–arollickingandvaguelymisogynisticsea
chantey.
WecombineforfavoriteworksofRandallThompson.ThesevenpiecesthatcompriseFrostianahave
beenwell‐lovedandwidelyperformedsincetheywerepremieredin1959.Thesetwascommissioned
tomarkthebicentennialofthefoundingofthetownofAmherst,Massachusetts.RobertFrost’spoetry
waschosenbecauseofhislongassociationwithAmherstCollege,andbecauseheandThompsonwere
admirersofeachother’swork.Likemanycommunitiesatthattime,Amhersthadseparatechoral
societiesformenandwomen.Indeferencetothelimitedcombinedrehearsaltime,Thompsonsettwo
ofthepoemsforthemen’schorus,twoforthewomen’schorus,andthreefortheircombinedforces.
Thompsonconductedthepremiere,andFrostwasonthefrontrowoftheaudience.Thereare
conflictingaccountsofFrost’sopinionofthesettings,butthemost‐repeatedstoryhasitthatwhenthe
lastchordof“ChooseSomethingLikeaStar”faded,Frostleapttohisfeetandshouted“Singthatagain!”
(Weprobablywon’t,butyou’rewelcometotry.)
OurprogramendswithRandallThompson’s“Alleluia,”writtenin1940fortheopeningconvocationof
theBerkshireMusicFestival(nowTanglewood),andsungatthesameceremonyeveryyearsince.
Besidesbeingagloriousexplorationofthecoloravailabletoachorusofmixedvoices,somewouldargue
that“Alleluia”isthemostbelovedsinglepieceofchoralmusicofthelastcentury.
Finally,itmustbesaidthatmosteverythingonthisfinalprogramofourseasonhappenstobe
accompaniedbypiano,andbydesignfeaturesmyfavoritepianist,whohappenstobefemale,andwith
whomIcouldtalkaboutmyfeelingsalldaylong,andwhoneverfailstoinspireinmeconfidence,
creativityandawkwardrun‐onsentences.

Creative Albuquerque's Bravos! Awards, honoring artistic innovation, entrepreneurship, and

AmyGreerisanactiveperformer,bothasasoloistandincollaborationwithsingersandinstrumentalists.SheholdsaMasterofMusic
in piano performance and a Master of Arts in educational psychology. Recognized for her creative approach to traditional piano
lessons, she has maintained successful piano studios in New Mexico, Massachusetts, Texas, and Missouri and regularly gives
workshopsthatfocusonthepsychologyoflearningthroughamusician’slens.Awriterandfrequentcontributortomusicjournals,she
hasbeenacolumnistforAmericanMusicTeachermagazine.ShehasperformedwiththeNewMexicoSymphonyOrchestra,theSanta
FeSymphony,andNewMexicoPhilharmonic,andisonehalfoftheJimGreerDuo,afluteandpianoduo.Shekeepshouseandtendsa
gardenforoneverycuteman,twolazycatsandthreefeistybettafish.
Born on the Navajo Reservation, Jerome Jim is a versatile musician with styles ranging from traditional Native American to the
classicalfluterepertoire.HeappearedwiththeGrandCanyonMusicFestivalintheworldpremiereofGuardiansoftheGrandCanyon
bycomposerBrentMichaelDavids.HewasfeaturedontheNPRprogram“NativeAmericaCalling.”Hehasalsoperformedatnumerous
UniversityofNewMexicopubliceventsplayingNativeAmericanworks.HereceivedhisundergraduatedegreefromtheUniversityof
NewMexicoinEuropeanMusicalPerformanceinaCulturalContext,adegreethatencompassesmusic,history,arthistory,literature,
andlanguages.In2003,heattendedtheConservatoriumvanAmsterdaminAmsterdam,TheNetherlandstofurthermusicalstudies,
andwhiletherepursuedresearchontheEarlyRomanticoperaticsopranoGiudittaPasta.HisprimaryfluteteachersincludeValerie
Potter and the late Frank Bowen.In his spare time, Mr. Jim enjoys reading, cooking, eating, listening to very bad electronic music,

contenttostayonplanetEarth,finds"AGirl'sGarden"tobeexcellent(albeitsometimesfrustrating)jawtherapy,andmostofallisgratefulto
besingingagain,whateverformthatmaytake.SolidlyontheVenussideinthisperformance,LaurelDemingcancertainlyappreciatethe
finer points of associating with those on the Mars as vocally and otherwise, Martians have proven themselves to be quite handy to have
around...tolerableeven‐nomatterwhethertheirskinisgreenornot. SuzanneDresslerenjoysoutdooradventureswithherhusbandand
dogs, including roads diverging in yellow woods and opportunities to gaze upon infinite star‐filled skies. Trish Henning is a professor of
physicsandastronomyatUNM,singsinallofherspare(?)time,andliveswithhusbandTonyandfourcats‐twomalesandtwofemales,ina
perfectlygender‐balancedhome.MeganRaderenjoysbringinglaughterandfunwherevershegoeswhetheritbewhileshe'steachingsilly
high schoolers how to sing and act, or while kicking it at home watching amazing, highly rated, T.V. programming with her husband Matt,
Luckythedog,andDivathecat.KarenSchlueisretiredfromadministrationatNewMexicoTech,countsQuintessenceasagreatjoy,andis
especiallypleasedtobesingingtheThompsonAlleluiaonceagain.StaceySnowdenhasbeenamemberofQuintessenceforover10years,
hasaBachelor’sDegreeinMusicfromTheUniversityofNewMexico,whereshemetherhusbandof12years,andisahardworkingmomof
two hilarious little girls. Bryan Butler actually studies Venus and Mars as part of his work, and his wife and kids often claim he's from
another planet. Andrew Clouse is a father, a husband, a youth pastor, and a baritone who sings tenor when Matt has exhausted all other
