What is a Rainforest?
 A rainforests can be described as a tall ,
dense jungle .The reason it is called a
‘Rain Forest’ is because of the high
amount of rainfall it gets per year.
Why is it called a Rainforest?
 It is called a rainforest because of the
precipitation and humidity.
 There are heavy rains during at least
part of the year and a dense canopy of
trees trops a lot of moisture in the air
below.
Why are Rainforests important to
us?
 They are very important as the plants
of the rainforest generate much of the
Earth’s oxygen.
Interesting facts on Rainforests.
 An area of a rainforest the size of a football
field is being destroyed each seconds.
 Giant bamboo plants can grow up to a
inches a day.
 Rainforests cover only 6% of the Earth’s
surface but yet they contain more than ½
of the world’s plant and animals species.
Australian Rainforests Areas…
List of Australian Rainforests.
 Queensland
 Tasmania
 New South Wales[Gondwana
Rainforest]
 Victoria
 Northen Territory
 Western Australia
Queensland…
Queensland is an Australian state covering the
continent’s northeast, with a coastline
stretching nearly 7,000km.Its offshore Great
Barrier Reef, the worlds largest coral reef
system, hosts thousands of marine species. The
city of Cairns is a gateway to the reef and
tropical Daintree Rainforest. The stylish
capital, Brisbane is flanked by the surfing
friendly beaches of the Gold and Sunshine
Coasts.
Tasmania…
Tasmania, an isolated island state off Australia’s south
coast, is known for its vast, rugged wilderness areas
largely protected within parks and reserves. On the
Tasman Peninsula, the 19th- century Port Arthur penal
settlement is now an open-air museum. In Hobart, the
port capital, Salamanca Place’s Georgian warehouses
now house galleries and boutiques. Its Museum of Old
and New Art has a contemporary edge.
New South Wales[Gondwana
Rainforest]…
The Gondwana Rainforest of Australia spill across 50
separate parks in Northern New South Wales and
South East Queensland. Accesseible from Byron Bay,
this vast World Heritage – listed area embraces the
World’s largest subtropical rainforest, along with warm
and cool temperate rainforest types.
Victoria…
Victoria, Australia contains approximately 32,000
hectares of temperate rainforest invarious regions.
The areas with rainforest include. East Gippsland,
Strezelecki Ranges, Wilsons Promontory, Central
Highlands, and Otway Rangers. The rainforests
vary between cool temperate and mixed cool
temperate.
Biodiversity of Australian
Rainforests…
 Plants.
• They grow in areas with the best conditions for plant
growth in the world- with year- around warm temperatures,
plenty of sunlight and rainfall. Despite the fact that their
soils are poor on nutrients, they support so many species
that they have been compared to coral reef ecosystems.
Here is some images on what types of plants are found in
tropical rainforest biomes in Australia
Birds.
 Kingfisher is typical
rainforest bird. They are
found almost everywhere
although most species
live in old world and
Australia. Kookburras
that are only found in
Australia, are the world’s
largest kingfishers.
•Other classic rainforest birds are
‘BIRDS OF PARADISE’. They are about
40 species of them, and with a few
exception they are all found in New
Guinea. [some are found in Cape
York, Australia]
•Animals.
• One third of Australia’s
315 mammal species call
the Daintree Rainforest.
• Its name is Flora and
Fauna.
•Tree Kangaroo
 They live in trees in the
Rain Forests of Australia,
West Papua.
•Monkey
 Some Australian
rainforests monkeys are
omnivores, eating both
animals and plants.
