Performance Notes
-All accidentals pertain only to the specific pitch to which they are assigned (no octave
equivalences) and are neutralized at the beginning of the next measure.
Vocal instructions:
-X note heads should be spoken with rhythmic accuracy. Range can change so make
the sound according to how high or low it is. Pitch is not important.
-Spoken text will be shown with an instruction on the tone of voice it should be recited
in.
-Square note heads indicate sprechstimme.
-Glissandi should be done smoothly without break in the sound.
- The line in m. 40 of song II indicates a comfortable middle register of the voice.
- An x note head with a harmonic above it indicates a falsetto pitch. The pitch is
indeterminate.
Piano instructions:
-Diamond noteheads mean to depress the indicated keys silently.
-Clusters should include both white and black keys.
Guiro: glissando with fingernails on the white keys , without depressing the keys,
only "clicks" from the nails against the keys.
Program Notes
The Fog Never Rose is a set of 3 poems by Carl Sandburg written for the New Brew
series at Opera on Tap. Although all the poems are separated in Sandburg's Chicago,
their is a common theme: fog, the lake, and ships. I am often enamored by the sight
of fog in the city of Chicago, and would even go as far as to say that a fair portion of my
music I have written lately tends to have some "foggy" undertones. This piece is no
exception (har har).
