The University of Windsor On a campus that occupies 125 acres, with over 16,000 full-time and part-time students, some of the finest educational facilities in the country blend with historical landmarks dating back to 1857 and the original Assumption College. Seven residences accommodate 1,800 students. St. Denis Athletic and Community Centre provides 75,000 sq. ft. of athletic and auditorium facilities. The University of Windsor is made up of nine faculties. The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research has 51 Masters and Doctoral programs. Students participate in research programs by the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research in the areas of environmental chemistry and toxicology, and conservation/resource management; by the Research Centre for Integrated Microsystems in the field of microelectronics and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS); and by the Fluid Dynamics Research Institute which provides training for graduate students in all aspects of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. The University of Windsor's newest addition is the $24 million Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and plans are underway for a $110 million Centre of Engineering Innovation (CEI). The CEI will represent a new approach to engineering, bringing industry partners directly to faculty and students to operate research and development and co-op programs. The concept known as a "manufacturing courtyard" will bring industry and academia into much closer contact on a daily basis, to the benefit of both. No other Canadian university can match Windsor's facilities and researchers in support of the automotive industry. Five of the University's 15 Canada Research Chairs focus on research involving the automotive industry. In 2001, the University of Windsor was selected to lead Auto 21 - the Automobile of the 21st Century, the largest of four major research and development projects set up under the federal government's National Network of Centres of Excellence program. Auto 21 involves a consortium of 27 universities carrying 28 automotive research projects. Howe Institute, the local board is among the 13 best in the province. The vast majority of elementary and secondary school students attend publicly-funded schools. The Ministry of Education administers the system of publicly funded elementary and secondary school education in Ontario, in accordance with the directions set by the provincial government. Catholic education is also publicly funded in Ontario. Students must complete standardized testing in most grades up to and including grade ten. Some secondary schools provide specialized programs for students; for example, the Specialist High Skills Major is a new opportunity within the Ontario Secondary School Diploma to allow students to pursue programs in specific areas of concentration that lead to workplace, apprenticeship training, college or university. The Greater Essex County District School Board is one of several school boards in the province to launch this program. The focus of the program is in the manufacturing sector with courses offered at General Amherst, Herman and Sandwich Secondary schools. Another specialized program is the Walkerville Centre for Creative Arts (WCCA), a program for visual and performing arts students in the Windsor-Essex Region operating from Walkerville Collegiate. Located in the City of Windsor is Académie Ste. Cécile International School. A private school providing elementary and secondary education, Ste. Cécile is affiliated with the International Baccalaureate Organization and prepares students for the world recognized International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma). Situated on the Detroit River, the natural boundary between Canada and the U.S., our strategic location provides a sophisticated system of expressways, rail, air, and deepwater port facilities, a railway tunnel, and vehicular bridge and tunnel to service the heart of North America. A large and affluent economy, 125 million people, 90% of the vehicle assembly plants and 60% of both Canadian and U.S. manufacturing capabilities are all concentrated within one day's trucking time of Windsor-Essex Regional manufacturers. Detroit-Windsor Crossings The Region's infrastructure and access to the U.S. market is second to none with rapid commercial preclearance on the Ambassador Bridge, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel or with the Detroit-Windsor Truck Ferry service. Currently the Detroit-Windsor crossings are estimated to handle at least one third of the total trade between Canada and the United States. Over $300 million in goods cross the Windsor/Detroit border each day. Over 10,000 trucks cross the Ambassador Bridge every day. Roadways The Windsor-Essex Region is serviced by well-maintained expressway connectors, provincial highways and Canada's main street, the Macdonald Cartier Freeway (Highway 401). All routes interconnect with the U.S. interstate system via the fourlane Ambassador Bridge or Detroit/Windsor Tunnel. Business and industrial parks are strategically located throughout the highway system for access to fast and convenient service. A highly sophisticated trucking industry is well established in the Region, providing competitive rates and numerous alternatives for the cost efficient movement of freight destined for local, national and international markets. Locally more than 50 major trucking firms provide bond, warehousing, forwarding, piggyback, customs clearance, trailer shipping services, and an association with the Detroit commercial trucking zone to ensure full-service capabilities. With the introduction of zero inventory manufacturing by major auto companies, "Just In Time" trucking originated in the Windsor-Essex-Detroit marketplace and remains the standard on which manufacturers rely today. Because of the connections to CN, CP, Norfolk Southern and CSXT, the customers of the ETR are able to access any point in the rail networks of Canada, the United States and Mexico. Rail traffic to and from the U.S. is accommodated in a twin track tunnel that provides the fastest, most uncongested, easiest grade, lowest cost method of moving rail cars from Chicago to New York City via Niagara Falls. The Port of Windsor The Region can accommodate deepwater ships of up to 1,000 feet in length in any of the 14 deepwater berths on the Canadian side for lake freighters and ocean-going vessels. Altogether, these terminals handle over 5-million tonnes of cargo annually. There is also more than 16,000 feet of berthing space, 449,000 square feet of warehousing and 220 acres of outdoor storage available.
