“And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in
favour with God and man.”
Luke 2:52
Values are a powerful force in our world. They form
our attitudes and shape our day to day behaviour.
They are virtues that are not bound by time and
are at the heart of what develops our character.
Furthermore, they direct what we want for our
children and what we want from our school. It is
widely accepted that all schools are shaped by a
mix of values and it is in this mix that we reflect on
what we value in our school.
Historically, schools have supported a
performance based education. This is a focus on
what we want our students to be able to do rather
than focussing on what we want our students to
be. This is an issue of values. Performance based
education is where students are valued for their
productivity alone. Performance has no room for
caring. If the only and greatest goal for a school
is to be the ‘top academic’ school in the country
then there is a real temptation for a school to
focus only on academic success rather than the
character of the child. This is a deficient and
potentially dangerous education.
3. It can cause ‘teachers to teach to the test’ and
leave out aspects of the curriculum that challenge
and stir up a child’s heart to serve or love others.
At Calvin Christian School we value the mind and
the heart. This is how we are created and a Christian
school must attend to the whole child. Luke 2:52
shapes our understanding of this notion.
A Christian School should not merely attend to
the heart of the child. Our students are to grow in
knowledge and wisdom, they are to be equipped
with the knowledge and skills to critique and
engage contemporary society just as much as they
are to grow in Godly character and their relationship
with Christ. A balanced Christian Education is one
where we value academic pursuit and we value
conditions of the heart. This is our value. They sit
side by side, not jostling each other for supremacy,
but sitting in unison working together.
Yours in Christ,
Caleb Cooper
The danger for a school of focussing solely on
academic results is three-fold:
1. It sends a message to students that their value
or worth to the school is tied up in their academic
ability and what they contribute to the academic
reputation of the school.
2. It can lead a school down a path of either
‘massaging’ results to look good, or providing
courses to students that offer ‘easy to get’ awards
without a concern for the appropriateness of that
course for the student.

Young Antarctic Scientist Program visit Year 4
On Thursday the 31st some scientists, who have been studying
Antarctica, came in. First they talked about where Antarctica is.
Then they talked about how ice flows really slowly and a few other
different things. Then the class broke into two separate groups to do
experiments.
One group looked at some ice from Antarctica. The other group
experimented with flubber seeing how ice moves. After that both
groups came inside. Next we broke up into five different groups to do
another experiment with the flubber. We put the flubber at the top of
a half tube and watched it go down. We experimented with different
surfaces and angles. Then we heated the flubber up and put it down
the tube, it went faster when it was heated. After that we tried on
some Antarctic clothes.

On Thursday the 31st some scientists, studying Antarctica, came in
and we did some experiments. First they told us their names and then
they told us what we were working on. Then we split up into groups.
One group had a look at and touched an ice core and the other group
used flubber to see how ice flows and forms ice shelves. Then we came
back to our desks and we talked about Antarctica a bit more. After that
we split up into 5 groups which were our 4 normal reading groups
except with one or two people from each group to form into a 5th
group. In our 5 groups we all experimented how ice flows and how
different textures, angles and temperatures change how fast ice flows.
Next we came back to our desks and said goodbye to the scientists.

SEcondary swimming carnival
The Calvin Secondary Swimming Carnival for 2016 was a wonderful
day. Students and staff were in high spirits, and many got right into
the spirit of friendly competition between Westminster, Wittenberg
and Geneva. The prime colours of Yellow, Red, and Blue dotted the
Hobart Aquatic Centre, making a colourful splash as the colour coded
swimming caps competed in the water. The spectators, too, embraced
the spirit of the day, supporting their teams and their mates. All teams
enjoyed the novelty events which started the day; and of particular
interest was the raft flipping – an event quite novel for an indoor pool.
A highlight of the carnival was the teamwork shown by the Year 11/12
girls in the 4 x 50 m Individual Medley. The other competitors showed
real Christian character and a great heart when, despite finishing a
gruelling race, they swam back along the adjoining lanes and then
swam alongside their competitor who was doing it tough, shouting
encouragement to finish the last lap. What a great show of real
sportsmanship by the girls concerned!
There were three records broken during the Carnival.
Congratulations go to,
Yr 7/8 Girls Individual Medley - at 3:16:40 sec,
Mia Townsend shaved off 26/100th sec.
Yr 7 Girls relay - at 3:19:31, Geneva shaved off 1.07 sec.
11/12 Boys 50m Freestyle - at 26.72sec,
Chris Allie shaved off 56/100ths sec from the previous record.
We thank the Heidelberg swimmers from Emmanuel Christian
School who participated in the carnival. It is great to have additional
competition.
Thank you to all the Calvin Staff who worked tirelessly until the day
was done, and enthusiastically performed their allocated roles; and
our wonderful students who supported the day, and ensured it was
an outstanding success.

Dutch Exchange Program
Eleven of our Year 9 students (plus 2 teachers and 2 parents) headed
off to Europe as part of Calvin’s Dutch Exchange Program on Thursday
24 March. Last year, 9 students from Gomarus College in Groningen,
The Netherlands, came to visit Tasmania and were hosted by Calvin
families.
The 15 team members have been preparing for over a year for
this trip. Apart from fundraising, the team members have made
bread boards and cheese knives for their host families. They also
participated in lessons on Dutch road rules to prepare for bike riding
in Holland! These lessons culminated in a bike ride from the Domain
to Geilston Bay. Their weekly lunchtime sessions have included basic
Dutch lessons, historical information about World War Two and the
experiences of Anne Frank and research into famous artwork in the
Rijksmuseum.
Singapore waterfront
They have just spent 10 exciting days with their Dutch host families
and attended Gomarus College. Students have learnt an enormous
amount about the Dutch way of life through their homestay and
school attendance. The team arrived by train in Amsterdam this
morning and we will travel to Rotterdam in the coming days.
Thank you to all parents, students and staff members who have
supported us in our preparations for this trip!
