April 12, 1861. This was the official start of the Civil War. First battle of the Civil War,
Confederate troops fired on Union “Enemy” troops.

First major battle, Confederate Victory. Battle shocked the north and they
understood it to be a longer war than anticipated. Stonewall Jackson
receives his nickname at the First Battle of Bull Run because of how disciplined
his men were.
December 13, 1862: First battle to take place in a city.
Lighter weighted Confederate ships used to sneak past the Union
blockades in order to get to the southern port.

650,000-850,000 people died. Of these, 620,000 were casualties of war.
400,000 were captured or missing. 476,000 were wounded.
2% of the US population died because of this war.

This was the biggest killer of the Civil War. For every three soldiers killed in
battle, 5 died of disease. (So, if 80 people die, 50 would have been killed by
disease.
Confederate Soldiers were trying to establish a Stronghold that reached
the oceans of California. Their goal was to have a country that spanned
“Ocean to Ocean”
Westernmost battle of the Civil War. Confederate victory, but a month later the
Union was able to take Tucson without firing a single shot.
September 17, 1862 Bloodiest DAY of the war. 22,717 deaths. Union Victory, Single
Bloodiest day of the war, 23,000 casualties in 12 hours of fighting, Union General
McClellan fired. 5 days later Lincoln resolved to fight for the end of slavery
July 1-3, 1863 Turning point of the war in favor of the Union. More people
died in this 3 day battle than any other one.
First example of “modern” warfare. Total destruction.
He left a 40-60 mile wide stretch of complete destruction, nothing was
spared. November 16-December 21, 1864
