The Georgia Milestones Assessment System is a summative assessment program spanning grades 3 through high school. The Milestones measure how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Students in grades 3–5 take an EOG assessment in each content area. Georgia Milestones are designed to provide students and their parents with critical information about the students’ achievement and, importantly, their preparedness for the next educational level. The assessment system is a critical informant of the state’s accountability measure, the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI), providing an important gauge about the quality of the educational services and opportunities provided throughout the state. Results of the assessments are used to identify students failing to achieve mastery of content, to provide educators with feedback about instructional practice, and to assist school districts in identifying strengths and weaknesses in order to establish priorities in planning educational programs. We received the results from the spring 2015 test at the end of November. The Georgia Milestones are not comparable to the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), the former state assessment. However, we found that Bullard Elementary 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students scored higher than the county and state averages in each content area. Although we are happy with that accomplishment, we continue to review data in every aspect of our student population and work to increase student achievement. As always a partnership between home and school is vital to the success of our students. We appreciate the support you provide. Sincerely, Patrice Moore, Ed.D. Principal Assistant Principal News Happy February! I thought you might be interested to know about some of the mindful practices we’re incorporating at Bullard with our staff and students. Perhaps you’ve heard of the term, “Mindfulness”; but you really don’t know what it means. It’s definitely a term that is being used a lot these days in the media. Yahoo, Google, Harvard Business School’s Master’s Program, and numerous school districts in California and Massachusetts have all incorporated mindful times into their daily schedules or programs. Those participating on a regular basis report more satisfaction with the work environment, sleep patterns, and the ability to handle stressful situations better. Schools report a decrease in disruptive behaviors and an increase in student achievement. Mindfulness is all about calming your mind in the present moment. It is our belief that all students benefit from movement or quiet practice. Bullard began incorporating mindful practices last year by piping music through the hallways, and decorating and painting to add to the warmth of our environment. We’ve seen an increase in the number of classrooms this year that are taking time to give their students mindful breaks in the day. We have a dedicated room for staff that we have named “Australia”. It’s a place for staff to go during their planning to relax and rejuvenate. The room is softly lit with lamps and Himalayan salt lamps. Soft music, diffusers, and fountains give the impression that they’re a world away. It gives them a few minutes to take a few deep breaths, color mandalas, or play with kinetic sand. Two of our teachers also redecorated our mailroom to make it more inviting as well. Our staff members are able to now pick up a bottle of water or use the Keurig if they need it. We have teachers on every grade level who incorporate yoga sequences, mindful quiet time, and/or mandalas throughout the day. This not only addresses the students’ needs to relax their mind and focus their thoughts, but it also has them up and moving. We’re very excited about the positive changes we’re seeing, and we look forward to many more! Bonnie Cole Assistant Principal School Newsletter Page 2 of 4 Grade Level News Grade Level News Page 2 of 12 School Newsletter Kindergarten News Winter in Kindergarten is so much fun! We celebrated the 100th day of school with lots of fun activities. We are so proud of our students and what they can do with the number 100! We learned all about Martin Luther King, Jr. and we are now getting ready for some Valentine celebrations. Remember that we will be out of school February 1519. The Kindergarten Team First Grade News First graders have spent the last few weeks learning about our Earth’s continents & oceans. Harriet Tubman’s adventures on the Underground Railroad rated #1 with the children. In math, we are working hard at balancing equations, mentally adding 10 more and 10 less, comparing numbers, and problem solving. Keep working on sight words as we are aiming for 200 by the end of the year in reading. In writing, the children are forming opinions and supporting them with quality reasoning. Lastly, we will become botanists as we study plants. 3rd quarter rocks! The First Grade Team Second Grade News 2nd grade is looking forward to our performing arts trip to see Sleeping Beauty at the Cobb Energy Center on February 10! Our friends from Wellstar will also be visiting on February 4-5 to talk about Smile Power! They will help us learn how to properly take care of our teeth and the importance of dental hygiene. In math this quarter, we are learning all about addition and subtracting with regrouping, identifying and counting money, and working through one and two step word problems. We will be learning all about Martin Luther King Jr. and Jackie Robinson for social studies. Our science unit this quarter includes space and shadows, how exciting! During our reading time, we will be recounting stories and comparing and contrasting fairy tales and informational texts. Our writing focus this quarter is opinion writing. We cannot wait to see all the opinions our second graders have to share! The Second Grade Team Third Grade News After a restful winter break, third graders were ready to start the New Year on the right foot! Our students spent some time creating resolutions and goals for the New Year, and are ready to continue their preparation of becoming fantastic 4th graders! It will be here before we know it! Many students resolved to continue learning their 0-12 multiplication facts, as well as increase their speed and accuracy with the level requirement increases each facts they do know! We are also dedicating ourselves to building our reading stamina and fluency, as our grade quarter. In Science this quarter, we get to learn about our great state of Georgia and its’ habitats! We use that knowledge to help us decide what plants and animals need to adapt and thrive in certain environments, and what would happen if our environment changes. Our Watershed Performance in March will help reinforce the role that humans play in protecting our planet. Third grade is also excited for Science Day this quarter when we get to use The Scientific Method to explore the world around us! We will finish our 9 weeks with Social Studies. We will continue our study of Famous Americans when we learn about Mary McLeod Bethune, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Students will also practice our map skills and identify the Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, Colorado, and Hudson Rivers. We will reinforce our economics standards as we discuss the 4 types of productive resources (natural, human, capital, entrepreneurship). These will come in handy as we prepare for Economics Day in a few months! In English/Language Arts, we continue to work on our Informational and Narrative writing skills. As we read, we are focusing on describing characters in stories and explaining how each character influences the plot. We are also learning to compare and contrast themes, settings, and plots of stories written by the same author. It is very important to make text-to-text connections during this quarter! In Math, we have introduced…Fractions! Third graders are understanding that a fraction means a “part of a whole.” We will continue to practice multiplication and division strategies to help us solve problems. Checking our answers using mental math and estimating strategies is another important skill this quarter. We will also introduce algebra, where we replace a number with a letter or symbol and solve for the unknown. We are very proud of the growth third graders have made in math! We can’t wait to continue to push ourselves and grow as 3rd grade learners and leaders in the New Year! The Third Grade Team School Newsletter Grade Level News Page 3 of 12 Fourth Grade News Our students are staying focused on a daily basis as we continue to cover the standards for 4th grade in each subject area. During the third nine weeks, we have been learning about different reading strategies and writing skills in Language Arts. We will be learning various math concepts including Fractions and Geometry. In addition, we are building the kids knowledge of problem solving strategies that will be useful in the real world. We are journeying out of this world with our exploration of the Solar System. Students will be working on their VIP projects to help reinforce historical people in Social Studies. Please continue to help your child review some of the concepts we have covered in class at home, as well as practice multiplication facts. Thank you again for all of your support so far this year! The Fourth Grade Team Fifth Grade News Fifth grade is excited to be starting their last semester at Bullard before heading off to Middle School! We still have a great deal of learning to do before the Milestones, and are confident that our students are ready for the challenge. Students participated in Human Growth and Development classes in January and as expected they all survived! Fifth graders take pride in participating in Bullard’s Writing Fair, and we look forward to all of the writing pieces our 5th graders will create. We are also looking forward to Bullard’s Annual Science Day on March 4, and experiencing many hands on standards based activities. During the 3rd quarter, we will continue to review and practice previously learned Math skills and concepts, but will focus on: understanding the attributes of and classifying 2D figures, volume, converting measurements, and all operations with decimals. In Social Studies we will continue to move through history and study WWI, the Jazz Age, the Great Depression, WWII, and the Cold War. Our focus will be on key people and events (cause and effect). In Science, students will investigate electricity, magnetism, and their relationship. We will participate in several hands on experiments to allow students to self-discover. Finally, students will learn about cells (plant, animal, single-celled, and multi-celled). Microscopes will be used to observe and identify cells parts, as well as compare and contrast those parts. Students will also relate how microorganisms benefit or harm larger organisms. In ELA, we will continue to focus on both literary text and informational text. Students will use reading strategies to quote accurately from a text when explaining what a text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Students will also continue writing in both informative and narrative genres, as well as routine writing tasks that may include reading response journals, open-ended questions, and summaries. The Fifth Grade Team "Believe, Begin, Become" School Newsletter Page 4 of 12 Winter Music Notes Kindergarten – Our kindergarten students are celebrating Dr. King’s birthday by learning “Sing about Martin” and “Bluebird”. These songs teach simple melodies, play party games, and rhythmic patterns. We will also read simple notation including quarter notes and quarter rests using iconic notation. First Grade – “Shortnin’ Bread”, “Bow, wow, wow” and “Valentine Dance” will be featured this nine weeks as we learn about call response songs and reading traditional and non-traditional music notation. I’m especially looking forward to our performance of one my favorite texts “Click Clack Moo.” Students will be reading, tracking, and performing a rhythmic pattern to accompany this book. Second Grade – I’m so proud of our second grade students and the work they have been doing to read melodic notation. They are reading and writing melodies. We will continue to read patterns using the songs “Chinese Moon Festival” and “Valentine Song.” We are looking forward to making connections to text using the book “Caps for Sale” improvising simple rhythmic patterns and singing a repeated pattern to accompany the song. Third Grade – We are devoting this nine weeks to learning the line and space notes on the treble clef staff in third grade. We will play interactive games on the desktop computer, i-pads, and smart board; as well as traditional playing, reading, matching, and a little treble clef twister. Fourth Grade – Fourth graders will be improvising on Orff instrumentation as well as identifying instruments and voices by sight, sound, and family. We’ll work on reading and notating melodic and rhythmic patterns. We’ve started off this nine weeks by singing and learning about the Erie Canal. This song features a minor tonality on the verse and a major tonality on the refrain and touches on both Social Study and music standards. Fifth Grade – Parent information has been sent home about our upcoming musical performance of “Pirates!” Fifth graders are using this musical to address notation of simple melodies, describing various musical genres, and improvising pentatonic melodies. I’m looking forward to seeing you at our performances on March 24 th at our PTSA meeting and April 16th at the Big Shanty Festival. We are so excited to share this musical with you. Chorus – Chorus students have two exciting events coming up in February and March. They will be attending District XII Large Group Performance Evaluation on February 25th singing before judges and will present a Spring Concert on March 1st for friends and family at Bullard. School Newsletter Page 6 of 12 Counselors Corner Your Dreams for Your Child’s Future As parents you want to help make your child’s dreams come true. As educators and counselors, we want that too. Children are greatly influenced by the expectations we have for them. Successful Americans were asked in one study what contributed to their success. Many responded that they succeeded because their parents held high expectations for them. Believing in your child and valuing his or her efforts can help your child succeed. Small steps like setting aside a quiet place to study, ask questions about what he or she is learning in school, encouraging reading at home can make a difference. When your child leaves elementary school and goes to middle and high school, help your child choose courses in school that lead to a specific goal. Keep track of grades, and lend encouragement when the going gets tough. Become an involved partner with your child’s school. The future of our young people depends on the support and trust of those who care about them the most. This message is brought to you by your professional school counselors.
