Penshurst Place’s Living History
Presentation, Elizabeth I and the
ARMADA! is aimed at school
children studying 16th century
history or simply as a fun and
educational day out.
A skilled cast of performers recreate
colourful characters of the period and
involve students in the life of this
important household when Elizabeth I
arrived at Penshurst Place during her
Royal Progress as her troops are busy
preparing to combat the Armada.
Penshurst Place is an excellent
educational resource with its unique
blend of architectural styles and historic
connections. It is one of England's finest
stately homes with a history dating back
six and a half centuries and has been the
ancestral home of the Sidney family since
1552. Both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I
were frequent visitors to Penshurst and
throughout Tudor times members of the
Sidney family played important roles at
Court and in government. Penshurst
Place is therefore in a unique position to
interpret British history in the context of
local events and personalities.
The presentation will focus on life at
different levels in Tudor society giving
students a history lesson they can relate
to and enjoy.
Visitors will step back over 400
years in time to meet:
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I
Her Majesty has arrived at Penshurst
Place on one of her 25 ‘Progresses’ and
graciously agreed to see your pupils!
A Bellman to explain about the
different punishments of the time,
depending upon whether you were rich or
poor, male or female
A musician in the service of
Her Majesty. He will tell of the manners
of the time and play many of his
instruments.
The Kitchen Servant is busy preparing
food for the militia. The servant will talk
about 16th Century foods and the
difference in the diets of the English and
the Spanish.
The Local Militia who muster at
Penshurst Place, training local people in
the use of musket and pike
The Lady’s Maid as she gives students
an opportunity to try on Elizabethan style
costumes
