Jones President Andrew Kuffner 3 Principal Technology Next Big Lesson Speed Thrills The iPad (r)evolution September 2014 marks an important transformational moment in the life of the La Salle Prep community – but it may not be for the reason you are thinking. The wireless infrastructure at La Salle Prep has been undergoing significant upgrades over the summer and, as Director of Technology David Heineck explains, there were two important considerations for the team that was assembled to design and implement the school’s massive technology overhaul. The 1:1 Mobile Learning Initiative is ready for its debut as La Salle Prep students receive iPad training at summer bootcamps starting in early August. View the video at lsprep.org/LSPR This fall, La Salle Prep students will embark on an intellectual adventure. One of the great benefits of the initiative is that it will help to transform and enrich the learning experience of La Salle students. Alanna O’Brien, Vice Principal for Curriculum & Professional Development, wants to ensure that the next generation of La Salle students is fully prepared to benefit academically, socially, and culturally from a more immersive learning experience. “I think in the next 3-5 years the classroom is going to look different. It’s going to be less about the teacher in the front of the room lecturing and giving information to students because students will be able to acquire that information on their own.” “Our students are going to need to know how to use these devices responsibly and ethically.” She continued, “I also know that parents want to protect their kids from the world of social media and how they present themselves through technology to the rest of the world, so we need to be careful about putting these devices in students’ hands without also teaching them about digital citizenship and how they present themselves to the world through the iPad and social media.” Visit lsprep.org/LSPR to read more about the important role of teachers. 4 La Salle’s Technology Infrastructure View the video at lsprep.org/LSPR “First, make sure our network responds quickly and responsibly. Second, do as much as we can to promote responsible use.” Mr. Heineck believes that students should understand that along with the power of great connectivity comes a greater responsibility. Students will be reminded at this summer’s iPad bootcamps that what people do online stays around forever. A flippant post or picture can change their entire life. Mr. Heineck and a select group of faculty and other advisors began to design La Salle’s wireless campus in 2011. The team wanted to deliver a scalable and economical feasible system that could be updated with the fastest and most reliable hardware. The specific infrastructure model that is installed was implemented in September 2013. Isaiah Crittendon, La Salle’s Systems Administrator, managed the installation of the new wireless access points around campus. “The new [802.11ac] technology on our access points is going to be a stronger radio frequency, a stronger signal so you can go to a wider range. The iPads being shipped today do not support that technology but I can see it coming in 2015 or 2016.” La Salle Prep’s technology infrastructure is built to be adaptable, scalable, and consistent for the hundreds of simultaneous connections that it must manage. Visit lsprep.org/LSPR to learn more about the technology infrastructure. The six day trip blended the fields of biology, geology, anthropology, environmental science, and social justice. Students were challenged to leave technology behind and conduct river experiments, write poetry, debate politics, go rafting and hiking, and live the simple life. LSPR LSPR Comic Operetta The Mikado The Theatre Department celebrated the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operetta “The Mikado” and delighted audiences this spring. The musical, presented by drama director Ernie Casciato ‘72 and choir, guitar, and religion teacher Otto Wild, satirized politics, pretentious manners, and pompous social customs in the fairy tale Japanese town of Titipu. Students personified steam punk and anime visual themes to highlight the fantasy elements of the story, including Krystalanne Brunelle ‘14 portraying Katisha and Stepan Sveshnikov ‘14 as the Mikado. Athletic Excellence The Falcons left a legacy of athletic excellence in 2014. Both girls’ and boys’ basketball, boys’ golf, girls’ and boys’ tennis, track and field, and baseball earned Tri-Valley Conference championships this year. Individual honors went to Lexi York ‘15, who won her third consecutive National Title in USA Racquetball High School Girls’ Singles; Kiana Christensen ‘17 and Parker Busch ‘16 for their successes in snowboarding; Ben Hortaleza ‘14 for becoming the 4A 110-meter hurdles state champion; and Kate Christoferson ‘15 and Davis Keeney ‘14, who skied to success in blizzardlike conditions on Mt. Hood. As proud parent and Foundation Board Director Jeffrey Keeney noted, the skiers represented La Salle well competing “with winds gusting to 65 mph - weather only a ski racer could enjoy!” LSPR Enjoy photos of the incredible stage, costumes, cast, and crew and relive this farcical romp. lsprep.org/LSPR LSPR La Salle students showcase their art for a great cause La Salle’s school theme this year was Investing in the World’s Women. Art students responded to the challenges women face across the globe (lack of education, violence, early marriage, slavery, inadequate maternal health care) by holding a sale of artwork during the Student Art Show. All proceeds went to The International Rescue Committee, a nonprofit organization that responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people rebuild their lives. The IRC provides health care, counseling, safe spaces to survivors of sexual violence, and economic empowerment programs which increase women’s income and ability to provide for themselves and their families. Through the sale of their work, art students including Scarlett Herincks ‘14 raised over $1,000 for the cause. Tennis Triumphs & Challenges of an Undefeated Year Prior to coming to La Salle 18 years ago, Mike Devenney was the head coach at Oregon Episcopal School. When he arrived at La Salle, he discovered that his true calling was to develop the girls’ tennis team into a perennial contender for the district championship. In an exclusive video interview for LSPR, Coach Devenney talks about the benefits of nurturing a ‘No Cut’ program, coaching the girls’ singles through a 48-0 season, and the camaraderie that all of the players feel being part of the tennis team. 6 View the video interview at lsprep.org/LSPR LSPR 7 2014 Congratulations Valedictorians Jacqueline Breunig, Lillian Bengtson, Jason Nguyen Class of 2014 Each year the senior class elects a faculty member to present remarks to the graduates. To the Graduates “Truth be told, I’ve always felt a special affinity with this class. We have lots of things in common. For one, I went to a Catholic high school in the Portland area: Jesuit. For those of you who don’t know, Jesuit is fairly well-regarded. In fact, one of my friends from high school the other day said Jesuit was like the Exeter of the West Coast. I corrected him: Jesuit is the La Salle of Beaverton. Another coincidence, your journey through La Salle has closely mirrored mine. The Class of 2014 includes five National Merit Commended Scholars: Lillian Bengtson, Kelly Krumm, Jason Nguyen, Chase Smith, and Samuel Wade. Graduates earned over $11 million in college scholarships and grants. It was through those conversations, and service experiences, that we touched your soul. Not enough is made about touching the soul, but it is what we do best at La Salle.” – Denise L. Jones, President, Graduation 2014 Oh, The Places Watch a video of the graduation ceremony. You’ll Go! We were expected to perform tasks we weren’t terribly sure we could do on a daily basis. The upperclassmen picked on us for no reason. And we spent the first 30 minutes at each football game just looking for people to sit with. Your sophomore year, my second year, we were mostly glad to be done with our first year. We applied some lessons from the school of hard knocks, and besides an inexplicable eruption of acne right when school started, did just fine. Just me on the acne? Your junior year, my third year, we dipped our toes into new pools, made new friends, confirmed there were greener patches of grass on the other side of unexplored fences. Decided these new things just fit better. Got excited about possibilities. Your senior year, my fourth year, we looked around and saw opportunities for leadership. Knowing what we cared about, we made time for those things…and maybe a little schoolwork, too. We struggled under the burden of leadership, the work/life balance wobbled as we realized that being awesome required determination. We developed a richer understanding of the phrase “No Pain, No Gain.” Most importantly, we enjoyed the heck out of each other’s company. For this moment and the ones to come La Salle Prep Class of 2014, parents, faculty, family, and friends, congratulations. Good luck, Seniors Fourteen. Go Falcons!” Open House SAVE THE DATE Welcome future Falcons! Open House will be on Sunday, November 2, 2014, 1-4 p.m. 9 Leave Among the Angels to Serve Service Immersion Admissions Director Kam Kimball and religious studies teacher Nicholas Hurt traveled with a group of ten students to Los Angeles, California, over spring break for the third annual Among the Angels service immersion. Students volunteered at the Midnight Mission and Union Rescue Mission, preparing and serving food for those living in Skid Row. The group also worked with children at the Dolores Mission School, visited the Museum of Tolerance and Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral, and ended the week at Homeboy Industries. Fr. Greg Boyle, author of Tattoos on the Heart and founder of Homeboy Industries, welcomed La Salle’s hard-working students and faculty. LSPR Volunteer of the Year Congratulations to the 2014 Volunteer of the Year, Cindy Van Drimmelen, honored at the 2014 Benefactor Reception at Waverley Country Club. Van Drimmelen recently completed her eleventh year as chair of the annual Student Fundraiser. Affectionately known as La Salle’s head “Wreath Mama” by students, staff, and numerous volunteers over the years, Van Drimmelen has logged hundreds of hours coordinating the school’s only student fundraiser to more than double its net proceeds. LSPR Career Day Thanks to the 32 guest speakers who offered career advice to La Salle Prep students in February, including Jason VanderZanden ‘99 who greeted Dane Maben ‘14. Special thanks to Alumni Board member Kelsey Powell ‘02, chairperson of this annual event. 10 Falcons Soar with College Scholarships Jacob Bieker ‘14, salutatorian, earned the University of Oregon’s prestigious Stamps Family Charitable Foundation Scholarship. Bieker is among only five incoming freshmen to receive this scholarship which covers tuition, room, and board in addition to enrichment funds to pursue study abroad, unpaid internships, or other experiences. LSPR Valedictorian Jacque Breunig ‘14 earned a full four year scholarship to attend University of Southern California to study biomedical engineering this fall. Breunig received La Salle’s General Academic Award of Excellence as well as Commendations in Honors Christology, AP Physics, Economics, senior Awards of Excellence in Math and English, and the Cervantes Award in Spanish. LSPR Dual Enrolled Valedictorian Jason Nguyen ‘14 earned a full four year scholarship to attend Santa Clara University. Nguyen dreams of becoming an oncologist and plans to major in either biology or chemistry at Santa Clara. One of the National Merit Commended Scholars, Nguyen also received the General Academic Award of Excellence, Te Deum Award of Excellence in Religious Studies, and a Commendation in AP Calculus AB. LSPR Stepan Sveshnikov ‘14 earned a four year fully funded scholarship to attend Yale University. Sveshnikov received the General Academic Award of Excellence this year. He speaks three languages (Russian, French, English), merited a Commendation in Economics and the senior Award of Excellence in Music, and is an outstanding musician and conductor. LSPR at La Salle Prep and University of Portland Most incoming college freshmen are nervous about their upcoming collegiate experience, but recent graduate Chase Smith has already conquered that issue. During his senior year Smith was dual enrolled at La Salle and University of Portland and graduated with a 4.11 GPA. Smith transferred from Grant High School because he wanted more challenging classes. Smith excelled in his classes at La Salle, particularly in Advanced Placement Calculus AB as a sophomore. Smith took AP Calculus BC his junior year as well as a variety of other AP courses including: AP US History, AP Physics, AP Computer Science, AP Biology and Honors Spanish 4. Since Smith had completed most of the advanced classes at La Salle, Principal Andrew Kuffner recommended to Smith that he consider applying to University of Portland to participate in a specialized dual enrollment program. Traveling to UP in the afternoons, Smith took Microeconomics, Ordinary Differential Equations, and his favorite, a seminar class on hydroelectric systems scheduling. Smith heads to University of California Berkeley in the fall. He plans to major in math but also wanted to go to school in California. “They have a lot of issues there I am interested in: water and energy management.” LSPR 11 Alumni Updates 1 5 15 14 12 12 7 6 2 4 13 8 1970s 2000s 1 Chris Bochsler ‘70 joined the Alumni Association Board as the La Salle Archivist. This developing fund will become a permanent named fund in the La Salle Endowment when it reaches the $20,000 mark. The story began with Jim and Betty’s children, Jim ‘73 and Sue ‘76, and flourished in the next generation with grandsons Chris ‘00 and Matt ‘02, sons of Brad and Sue Gimarelli Harris. Contact President Denise L. LSPR Jones at 503.353.1430. Alumni parents Jim and Betty Gimarelli were deeply rooted in their Catholic faith and were lifelong supporters of Catholic education. Their family embodied the spirit of service and compassion for others which helps define Lasallian education. Jim and Betty passed away within eight hours of one another on December 20, 2013. The couple, happily married for 59 years, was well-known in Portland. Jim was known as “Mr. Hospitality” and served as the city’s first concierge at the Benson Hotel. As one of the founding members of Les Clefs d‘Or USA, the international association of concierges, Jim is credited with bringing this hospitality service to Portland. Betty earned her own fame through her work as an artist and successful businesswoman. As the founder and designer of The Portland Ornament, and later The Seattle Ornament, she created beloved limited-edition collectible Christmas ornaments throughout the past 25 years. “My parents taught us to give back to the Catholic schools that made you who you are. Their legacy is about always keeping the passion alive for Catholic education,” Sue Gimarelli Harris ‘76 explained. Philanthropist Joe Weston was a long-time friend of the couple and fully endorsed the scholarship fund. “Jim and Betty were friends of mine and we shared a commitment to a quality Catholic education. They dedicated their time, resources, and talents to ensure that the commitment to a Christian education would remain strong and available to the young deserving students who seek an above standard high school education. I know of no better way to honor the Gimarellis than to establish an endowed fund to help subsidize tuition costs to honor their legacy for generations to come.” Prior to her years of service on La Salle’s Board of Trustees, Sue wrote a reflection about her experience at La Salle. lsprep.org/LSPR LSPR 15 NON-PROFIT ORG.
