Historic World Cruise Sets the Stage for NPS
The triumphant return of President Teddy Roosevelt’s
Great White Fleet on February 22, 1909 catapulted the
United States onto the world stage and helped establish
today’s Naval Postgraduate School. Professor Chuck
Calvano will discuss the engineering, naval, social and
cultural lessons learned as the Fleet’s steam-powered
battleships and her crews found adventure and
international intrigue during their 14-month, 43,000-mile
voyage on the high seas.
About the speaker: NPS Professor Emeritus Chuck
Calvano had a distinguished career as a naval engineering
duty officer specializing in ship design and construction. He
became director of the NPS Total Ship Systems Engineering
program in 1991 and from 2004 to 2007 was the chief
scientist in the Office of Naval Research in London.
