The Monterey Peninsula Council, Navy League of the United States presents The Great White Fleet Triumph & Innovation February 26, 2009 Historic World Cruise Sets the Stage for NPS The triumphant return of President Teddy Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet on February 22, 1909 catapulted the United States onto the world stage and helped establish today’s Naval Postgraduate School. Professor Chuck Calvano will discuss the engineering, naval, social and cultural lessons learned as the Fleet’s steam-powered battleships and her crews found adventure and international intrigue during their 14-month, 43,000-mile voyage on the high seas. About the speaker: NPS Professor Emeritus Chuck Calvano had a distinguished career as a naval engineering duty officer specializing in ship design and construction. He became director of the NPS Total Ship Systems Engineering program in 1991 and from 2004 to 2007 was the chief scientist in the Office of Naval Research in London.
