It has got a long tube. There is alcohol in the tube. It is usually red. When the alcohol becomes warm, it expands. It goes up the tube. When it cools, it goes down the tube again. Thermometers can show temperatures below zero degrees Celsius. We use the word ‘minus’ for temperatures below zero. For example, -6°C.
