Naval Defence Standards (NDS)
BMT Defence Services has been
selected by the Ministry of Defence
(MoD) to lead a contract, in conjunction
with Lloyd’s Register EMEA. Under the
contract we will assist in the active
management and control of technical
amendments, update of the Maritime
Defence Standards and of associated
acquisition documentation under the
control of DES Ships FWE-NA-TD1.
The contract is known as the NDS
Services contract.
BMT is working with Lloyd’s Register
EMEA to fulfil the requirements of the
NDS Services contract and support the
mission statement of the MoD Defence
Equipment and Support (DE&S)
organisation “To equip and support our
armed forces for operations now and
in the future”.
Background
UK Government policy is to encourage
reliance on national, international and
commercial standards that apply across
world markets. To this end, a hierarchy
of standards has been published by
the Defence Standardization
(DStan) organisation.
The MoD is committed to using national,
international and commercial standards
whenever they are suitable for acquisition.
BMT calls upon Lloyd’s Register to
provide the technical input on the
application of other commercial
standards. Only where commercial
standards are unsuitable for MoD
requirements will Defence Standards
be maintained or developed.
A key objective of the NDS Services
contract is to assist MoD document
sponsors in managing their portfolio of
Defence Standards for maritime
acquisition. This will ensure that the
minimum number required to support
MoD acquisition will be in force and
that they reflect current technologies,
legislation and policies.
The NDS Project Team
The NDS project team is based in
Weymouth, and calls upon engineers
and specialists from across the BMT
group of companies and Lloyd’s Register.
It provides a flexible, comprehensive
service based on extensive experience,
a wealth of expertise and a sound
knowledge base. This is used to ensure
the key objectives of the NDS Services
contract are fully met and Standards
continue to be relevant, coherent
and current.
BMT works closely with MoD document
sponsors and other DE&S departments,
including the DStan organisation, in the
review and update of Standards. We also
call upon other subject matter experts
from the MoD, industry and academia in
order to bring together the best possible
review team for any given subject.
The contractual arrangement ensures
a strong project organisation of major
stakeholders working together to
achieve stated and agreed aims.

Document Validation
Main Database (NDSMD)
It is the intention to reduce the review
cycle for Defence Standards to a
maximum of four years.
BMT has developed a relational database
in which details of all Standards reviewed
under the NDS Services contract are
logged together with details of their
associated reference material.
Under the direction of BMT the NDS
project team will undertake the review
of nominated Defence Standards to
ensure their continuing benefit to the
MoD, or alternatively, suggest suitable
replacement documentation.
Where appropriate, other MoD legacy
acquisition documentation, e.g. Naval
Engineering Standards, DGS and SSP
publications, will be converted to
Defence Standards or Maritime Acquisition
Publications (MAPs). MAPs are created in
order to retain information that is not
considered suitable content for a
Defence Standard.
The NDSMD is available to all MoD and
industry users who have access to the
Restricted LAN Interconnect (RLI) at:
www.bmtdsl.r.mil.uk/nds.
This enables Sponsors to rapidly check
the status of their Standards and
determine those that might be affected
by the continual updating of reference
material, etc. It also automatically
identifies those Standards approaching
their next review period, ensuring that
none fall outside of the review cycle.
Naval Defence Standards
With the prior approval of DES Ships FWE-NA-TD1, the NDS Services contract is available to be utilised by other areas within
the MoD to facilitate the review and update of documentation. For all enquiries please contact:
