Requirements and Helpful Tips
Keep these in mind for Commencement Day.
Principal’s Letter and Graduation
Information
Dear Parents and Guardians:
As graduation approaches you will find yourself feeling mixed emotions; these
are exciting and bittersweet moments. The last nine weeks will fly. Like most,
your senior has probably started a myriad of countdowns and while we are just
as excited for all of our soon-to-be graduates, we are encouraging them to
make the most of the time remaining at AHS. Let’s work together to keep our
seniors focused on the finish line.
In regard to meeting graduation requirements, please review with your senior
that it is necessary for him or her to pass two of the last three grade entries in
a year-long course. Of the third nine weeks, fourth nine weeks, and final
exam, he or she must pass two. Colleges request final transcripts and have the
right to decline membership to those who have final transcripts with failed
courses. Too many of our seniors believe that college acceptance is irrevocable.
This is not the case.
Our graduation ceremony will be held at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein
Center, on Friday, June 2nd at 7:00pm. Doors to the arena will open at
6:15pm, and this event is open seating. Tickets are not necessary. Each
graduate will be provided one pre-paid parking pass for his or her family.

Girls: Choose light colored dresses, dress capris or dress pants and dress
shoes. Boys: Choose a white dress shirt, tie, dark dress pants, dark
socks and dress shoes.

Flip flops are prohibited. No jeans, shorts, cut-offs, sweats, t-shirts, sports
jerseys, tank tops, or tennis shoes should be worn to Commencement.


Iron gowns: Use low heat and be careful not to burn them.



Eligible seniors: don’t forget your honor cords and medals.
At Commencement, shake with your right hand and accept your diploma
with your left hand.
I believe you will enjoy the ceremony and all that we have planned. It will
surely be a prestigious event for our most deserving graduates.

Keep your tassel to the right side of your cap. Seniors will move their
tassels to the left once they graduate.
Eagle proud,

Diplomas are to be picked up immediately following the ceremony.
Parents are to be directed to meet you at Gate A and B after the June 2nd
Commencement ceremony.

No gum. Please do not bring personal belongings unless you are able to
carry them in a pocket.
Seniors are to arrive promptly to AHS at 4:00pm on Friday, June 2nd.
Parents are not permitted backstage at the Wolstein Center.
Please pay close attention to the timelines and requirements for the AHS
mandatory Commencement practice on Thursday, June 1st in the main gym
of Avon High School. On June 2nd, graduates will be transported to
Commencement following their 4:00pm check-in at Avon High School. The
Class of 2017 will take one last yellow school bus ride and travel as a group to
CSU for a short 5:00pm practice prior to the ceremony. This will allow
them to walk through the program on-site. Graduates will return home with
their family and guests.

Mandatory Commencement
Practice at Avon High School will
be held Thursday, June 1st.
On Thursday, June 1st, there is a Mandatory Senior
Commencement Practice. All graduating seniors must attend. The
practice will start with a continental breakfast at 8:30am.
If a senior does not attend this practice, he or she will not be
able to attend Commencement without preapproval from the AHS
administration. This practice is mandatory.
An optional senior class picnic is being planned by the senior class
officers the same day. This senior class picnic will take place
following practice on Thursday, June 1st beginning at approximately
12:00 noon. Details will follow from the senior class officers.
An Important Note To Seniors
The following information appears in the Student Handbook.
Please read carefully.
All graduating seniors must reconcile all financial obligations
with the school prior to receiving their cap and gown and / or diploma.
Only those students clearing all obligations and meeting the graduation
requirements may participate in Commencement. Commencement is a
privilege and not a right. For failure to pay fees, disciplinary actions and/or
other reasons, the administration has the right to deny the privilege of
participating in Commencement and all activities associated with it. Participation
in Commencement exercise is optional. Seniors who choose not to participate
should sign the opt-out on the last page of this guide and return to the Student
Services Office at least ten (10) days prior to Commencement exercises.
Those students who choose to take part in the graduation ceremony must
fulfill the obligations of cooperating during the practice session, and they
must attend all practice sessions. Students who fail to meet these obligations
may be denied the privilege to participate in the Commencement ceremony.
Requests for missing practice must be made to the principal prior to the actual
practice. Since the time and dates of the practice sessions are publicized in
advance, no excuse will be honored for work and appointments.
