• Democrats choose two candidates to run for President.
• Northern Democrats choose Stephen Douglas of________.

The South reacts
• to many southerners,
Lincoln's election meant that
the South no longer had a
voice in national government.
• they now believed the new
President and the congress
were now set against their
interests,

• Sen. John Crittenden of
Kentucky made a last ditch
effort to save the Union. In
December of 1860, he made
a proposal to extend the
Missouri Compromise line all
the way to the Pacific.
• He also proposed an
amendment to the
Constitution that was
unamendable, or one that
could never be changed.
• such an amendment would
forever guarantee the right
to own slaves south of the
compromise line.
• the bill received little
support.

1860 South Carolina
became the first state

• Most
southerners
felt they had a
right to
secede; let us
take a look at
page 480 in
our text to
find out why
they felt this
way!
• the seven states that seceded formed
a new nation in Montgomery, Alabama.
• nation would be called the
Confederate States of America.
• President would be Jefferson Davis.

This flag was adopted but never officially enacted. For twenty five days the Confederate States of America had no officially approved flag.This flag was raised in a ceremony on March 4, 1861, it contained seven stars, representing the original Confederate States.
