Introduction
This lesson was created for a 6th grade life science
class in accordance with ODE Content Standards.
Introduction
Through this lesson students will observe a
single celled organism, identify it’s structures,
and the primary function of those structures
Directions
• This lesson will help you identify and label the
different structures of a paramecium
• You can navigate the lesson by clicking on the
triangles at the bottom of each page that will
let you go forward or backward in the lesson.
You can also click on the center home button
to return to the home page
Directions
• Make sure you watch all the videos. They
provide important information!
• You can go through the lesson as many times as
you want!
• After you completed the lesson, you will take a
quiz on labeling the structure of a paramecium
Structure of a Paramecium
A paramecium is any
ciliated freshwater
protozoan of the
genus Paramecium,
having an oval body
and a long, deep oral
groove.
Structure of a Paramecium
This video shows actual paramecia under a
microscope. You can see the different
structures and their functions. It will be
very useful in being able to identify and
label these structures later on!

Structure of a Paramecium
Contractile Vacuole
A cavity in the paramecium that
is able to contract to expel
water and liquid waste
Micronucleus
Used for reproduction
Structure of a Paramecium
Endoplasm
Inner fluid portion of
the paramecium
Ectoplasm
The vitreous outer
layer of the
paramecium that
encloses the
endoplasm
Food Vacuole
A cavity within the
paramecium that is
responsible for digestion
Structure of a Paramecium
Canals of Contractile Vacuole
Division of the contractile
cavity of the paramecium
Macronucleus
The most important organelle in
the paramecium. It cannot
survive without it.
It also contains genetic material.
Structure of a Paramecium
Oral Groove
Cilia
Miniscule hair like cilia
that envelop the
paramecium and is
used for locomotion
Trichocyst
The root of the
vibrating Cilium
of the
paramecium
Canal of the
paramecium used to
ingest nutrients
Gullet
Aids in digestion.
Carries food from the Oral
Groove to the Food
Vacuoles

vacuole
opening and
closing!
