How to find us

Within this brochure you will find a wide range of courses
and workshops to increase your experience and knowledge
of plants and gardens, from pruning and propagation to
art and photography. Whether you enjoy creative days out
or short courses for building your skills, we hope you find
something to suit you in the following pages. The courses
offer the opportunity to learn alongside RHS horticulturists
and experts in their field in the amazing, unique setting of
RHS Garden Rosemoor.
There is plenty of variety for our visitors as well as many
favourites in 2016. Last year’s grafting course returns,
and the Gardening Starting from Scratch days have proved
so popular that we have ten days throughout 2016, as
well as a new Help I’ve Got a New Garden – a one day
workshop to help novices with the basics. Other new topics
include plant combinations, scything in our wildflower
meadows, seeds, scented plants and hardy exotics.
2
If you are creative we have six new willow workshops, a
Christmas Wreath workshop, needle-felting, Japanese Ink
Painting, two watercolours workshops and sketching for
beginners. Popular workshops with limited places often sell
out well in advance of the date, so to avoid disappointment
please book early and don’t forget they also make perfect
and unusual gifts for friends and family.
The Royal Horticultural Society is the UK’s leading
gardening charity, helping and inspiring millions of
people to garden. Our goal is to help people share
a passion for plants, to encourage excellence in
horticulture and inspire all those with an interest in
gardening. We are entirely funded by our members,
visitors and supporters.
We hope you find a course to match your needs and
look forward to welcoming you to the garden in 2016.

Andi has held her scything title for five years running and enjoys
teaching others the graceful art of scything. The skill has been making
a comeback in recent years, partly helped by a scene in the television
version of Poldark, and is a more environmentally friendly way to cut
grass and wildflower meadows. You will learn the history of scything,
how to sharpen and use the scythe and try different designs, all in
one of our wildflower meadows. Scythes and other tools will also be

Tutor: Paul Riley
The appeal of Japanese ink painting is in the flow of the brush. The
seemingly ‘effortless’ minimalistic stroke that suggests a bamboo
in the wind or a flying sparrow is magical. It is an art of economy,
using one brush and one colour to reflect upon nature’s harmonies.
This three day introductory course will teach you how to paint
summer bamboo, wild orchids and song birds. Using Japanese
brushes, ink and paper students will practice basic brush strokes to
create a beautiful image of plants and birds.
Keiron Leach lives and works in North Devon, primarily taking
inspiration from the surrounding landscape and its changing
weather and light conditions. He gained a degree in Fine Art at the
Surrey Institute of Art and Design in Farnham, and has exhibited
regularly ever since in galleries across the country.
In 1960, at the age of 16 Paul was the youngest ever exhibitor in
the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and this was the start of
his professional career as a painter. His watercolours have always
been influenced by China and Japan and is evident in the fluidity
of his brushwork. He has exhibited in galleries around the world and
his fourth book “The Magic of Watercolour flowers” has just been
published by Batsford along with his first DVD of the same title by
APV films.
Talia is based in London and will begin with a brief introduction
about the technique and its history, explanation regarding tools
and materials, followed by the teacher’s demonstration. Students
will be able to learn and explore throughout the day with various
exercises, working notes, one to one time, and plenty of practice.
All materials are provided and can also be bought from the tutor.
