A1
A certain number of ladies and gentlemen from the United States of America came to India on a pleasure
trip. Among the many cities that they visited, Calcutta was the one that left an impression on their minds
which lasted for a long time. They arrived at Calcutta – the biggest city in the country – about the middle of
the month of October. At this time of the year almost all the Hindus in West Bengal are busy with ‘Durga
Puja’. The party of Americans saw that a great many of the shops were closed. Almost all Government
offices, schools and colleges were closed on account of Durga Puja holiday.
On the last day of these holidays, the tourists were amazed to see an extraordinary large crowd of men,
women and children, consisting of more than a hundred thousand individuals, forming procession and
following a big idol which appeared to be made of silver and bedecked in jewels which must have cost a
large sum of money. This was the Idol of Goddess Durga. The Americana took a keen interest in the
procession which impressed them deeply.
They expressed their deep, great and sincere admiration for the devotion and faith of the worshippers of
the Goddess Durga. But they could not understand why such a beautiful idol, which had cost the Bengalis
so much money, and which they held in high esteem, should have been thrown into the river Hooghly.

Little Billy
Little Billy was born without hands. He had stumps where his hands were supposed to be. His sleeves
always hung loosely about his shoulders. Yet he was a very happy child. He went to a normal school like any
other child of his age. When he was just three years old, his mother taught him how to use his mouth to hold
a pencil to draw. It was very difficult at first but Billy was a determined boy and he soon mastered the skill
and was able to draw & paint using his mouth. His drawings and paintings were so good that his mother
made them into cards and sent them out to his friends on special occasions like birthdays and Christmas.
When Billy first started school, his classmates teased him or avoided him. Nobody played with him or
talked to him. He felt very dejected and lonely. One day, during an art lesson, his classmates saw that he
could paint beautiful pictures using his mouth and they were impressed with his talent. Ever since they
treated Billy like any other child. Billy made many friends in school and in the neighbourhood. He was not
ashamed of how he looked. In fact, he soon inspired people around him and encouraged them to look at
the bright side of life.
