Strategic Brainstorming Session: Main follow-up points
This document contains a summary of a strategic brainstorm session held in Stellenbosch, Western
Cape, in February 2013. The main aim was to further unity and focus on God's plan in South Africa to
establish his Kingdom within working environments. A group of key stakeholders across South Africa
were invited to attend this session. A brief summary of the meeting minutes and key follow-up
points for the day are provided below.
Common purpose
1. Identify a common purpose
• Cultivate and establish more unity between different ministries.
• Identify a well-defined common purpose.
• Align individual goals with this common purpose/direction.
2. Develop a group agreement/covenant
• Create partnerships between different workplace ministries – optimise the effectiveness
of different ministries in teaching, equipping and supporting believers in the workplace.
• Effective communication that will pinpoint how different visions and goals unite (i.e.
common purpose).
• Identify and study models to minister to the workplace that are already working to avoid
duplicating existing methods.
Interaction between church and work environments
1. Re-orientation: Put God first and be open for change
• Need re-orientation. Prophetic vision: everyone pushing a wall, then God told them to
reposition themselves. As everyone got into the right positions they just needed to
touch the wall to achieve breakthrough.
• True biblical evaluation of the condition of workplace ministries – individual as well as
church-based ministries.
• Re-orientation: seek God’s will/plan instead of focusing on human strategies.
• Hear from God what changes are needed in the different workplace ministries to
facilitate re-orientation in workplace ministry as a whole. This can include changing
existing mindsets, equipping and support between different workplace ministries.
• Bigger picture: actively cultivating a Kingdom mindset within the different ministries
instead of a ministry or church mindset.
• Define the role of your individual ministry to align with the heart and will of God.

•
Following the will of God should bring unity – implementing a strategy of an individual
could result in chaos.
Share feedback of brainstorming session with individual ministries and implement
change within the ministry where needed.
2. Relationships: Engage and build relationships between church leaders and
workplace ministries
• Repent of individual agendas/opinions and establish an open relationship with church
and workplace ministries.
• Initiate conversations in order to establish relationship between churches and workplace
ministries.
• Organise and shape a platform for church and workplace to unite in their vision.
• Relationship as foundation can cultivate values necessary for collaboration between
church leaders and workplace ministries.
• Partnership between workplace ministers and churches are necessary to equip, teach
and support believers in the workplace more effectively. We need to partner to equip
teach and support believers in the workplace –dying of self.
• To challenge dualism more effectively, ministries and church leaders should be trained
and equipped to understand the world of work in more depth.
Action Steps
1. Steering committee
• Establish a steering committee or team that can further champion and mobilise the
momentum and action plans gained from the day.
• Establish follow-up discussions and
• Establish 3-4 immediate action steps.
• Develop a framework and/or a process of integration to link all together, including
different ministries.
• Vision casting for common goal: defining a framework (vision/purpose) to understand a
common and individual purpose.
• Duplicate conversation, such as the brainstorm session, in other provinces.
• Move away from structures that control, to platforms that mobilise.
• Development of new terminology: for example, marketplace ministry is an undefined
term and difficult to understand. Alternatives include workplace or career oriented
ministry.

2. Central database/website
• Establish a central database/website that includes information of different ministries
and links to their websites.
• A uniting body or network that can serve as platform where different ministries are
linked together for collaboration and sharing.
• Promote the skills, gifts and tools of each other to avoid a sense of competition.
• Appoint someone to run this platform.
• Investigate who takes responsibility for such body.

Call42’s role and next steps
Call42 initiated the brainstorm session because of a perceived need during two years of conducting
research for its survey. The Call42 team dedicates itself to establishing a team of people that are
passionate and called to further the outcomes of the day. We believe this is something born in the
Spirit, therefore has the potential to realise significant impact if we keep on dedicating energy. In
good faith, we now assume this to be a collective and shared vision for all that attended.
